I have a bone to pick with the Highland IL School District..they are having school today..on the day that Veterans Day is being observed..the school said that a committee decided to have school today since the official Veterans Day fell on a Sunday this year. Not all the school districts in the surrounding are having school today. It appears that honoring our Veterans is not all that important to the Highland School District. They have no school when the teachers have a workshop. Is that more important than honoring and respecting our Veterans?..not in my book..by them having school today it is a show of disrespect to our Veterans. If not for our Veterans we would not have the freedom we all have today. The Highland School District is sending the wrong message to their students...just my opinion

Actually, YESTERDAY was Veteran's Day and was celebrated. Today is just the day everyone takes off work because they weren't working yesterday.

Well apparently you have NO kids in the school district. Highland Honored all veterans on Friday. Veterans came to school. Some of the kids spoke to the Veterans at the Veterans assembly at the end of the day. It was actually something You sir would/should be PROUD OF!

That is fine they had veterans come in Friday but his point is today is Veterans Day observed. So no mail, no banks, the city office is closed but the school is still in session. They too should observe the holiday and be off. It it fell on Monday they wouldn't have school and probably still had an assembly Friday. Show some respect people, so many thousands of vets have died to protect our right just to be on here bitching. My thanks go out to every Veteran and God Bless the USA.

Thank You Really!! That is my point exactly..and by the way "How about this" it doesn't matter if I have kids in school or not..with your way of thinking than the schools should do this..let them have their holiday parties at school but don't let them off for the holidays..will that work for you???

I agree totally.
The kids should have had a day off today.
On the other hand, it did give the parents who weren't working a day away from the kids to get stuff done.
Eh!

I don't have an attitude at all. There were many programs at places to honor them but Monday was the official day to honor them. Maybe you have kids in the district and wanted a day off away from them? Maybe you haven't had or have anyone in our military? You are the one that is cursing at me so you are the one with the attitude. I am very proud of our Veterans and men and women in the military. It is all about respecting those who put and have put their lives on the line to protect us all..we all have the right to our opinions and can voice them..even you.

All of you need an attitude adjustment!!! The veterans were honored and they are happy with it. My sone is a veteran and he was satisfied because he was given the time to be honored. I was not given the day off at work so why should the kids be off of school. The veteran were given their place in the spotlight on Friday and were pleased to be honored. If you feel like every occasion should be a day off of school then they would be out of school more than in. Give it a break and just be glad that the veterans were given the respect that they deserve. Everyday should be a day of honor for the military but we cannot close down the country for it every day.

I was raised in the military and have a granddaughter that just joined the Marines. I don't feel like every occasion should be a day off from school..but do think that a day off to honor our Veterans is far more important than a day off for a teacher's workshop. I am sorry you had to work and your employer doesn't think to honor them either.

Not all the schools in the district had Veteran's day celebrations. Did not have Anything at the Primary?! I also agree with having school put to honor our Veterans. Especially after hearing the Mayor saying that he thinks we should educate our children about Veterans! Passing a book around doesn't count!

Didn't Highland also have their first ever parade for the Veterans this year as well as teaching our children on Friday? I believe that Highland has done a great job teaching our children what the Veterans mean to each and everyone of us. It is not just a day off school, or even work for that matter.

Here's an idea.... How about the parents teach their children about the veterans! Why do you feel the need to have someone else teach your children EVERYTHING?

I'm not a fan of all the days the kids get off school, but I do have to agree that normally Veterans Day is celebrated by a day off school and as important as Vererans are, I think they should have been off school. Good God, they will sure have Caasimir Pulaski Day off. WTF?

Parent Too.... They have not had off for Casmeir Pulaski for YEARS. So please be sure to check the school calendar so you send your kids on the right days.

Being off Monday would not mean anything to those kids. It would be just another day off for them. Do you honestly believe they would reflect on what Veterans Day really means? I think not. Most of the kids nowadays take everything they have for granted and many of the younger adults. It's the same on Memorial Day only it's not just kids but adults who think it means a day for a cookout or barbeque. I can appreciate the sacrifices that men and women are making and have made in serving their country. My father was in the Army during WWII and my husband was in the Marines during Vietnam. Many of my fellow alumni from Alton High lost their lives in Vietnam. Having a Veterans program at the school is a good thing. It's really poignant when you have a WWII veteran at the program because they are disappearing year by year. The parade in Highland was a good start to calling attention to veterans.

Why should they have the Monday off AFTER Veterans day? None of those kids are veterans. The school did their honor to the vets on Friday, and my family was at the square on Sunday to show our support and respect. With the day falling on a Sunday this year, as many business were open as they were closed. Veterans who had to work on Monday should have been the ones to have the long holiday weekend, not the kids at school. And everyone wonders why kids feel everything is all about them. 3/4's of them do not even know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans day. And most adults use the two days as an excuse to drink beer.
