Lady,
I think you hit the nail on the head with your post. Now we have to leave it to the school board and the community to figure out what we are going to do IF.
The IF theory has been working for other districts throughout the nation. The basis is this: If A happens, B is the result...if C happens, D is the results, etc.
Basically, the districts have worked on contingency plans for how they will deal with shortfalls. And they have plans for what they will do when the stimulus money is gone.
The reason that these districts have created the IF plans is so that they can work together with the community to continue to find alternatives. If they cannot find the alternatives, at least the parents would know in advance if their school will be closed. It won't be dropped on them like a hand grenade.
I have all but given up hope for an IF plan in Alamogordo, it seems that people would rather be reactive instead of proactive, and those who try are critized to the extremes.
I totally agree that having a contingency plan is of the utmost importance now. I think the problem all along with APS is that they don't know how to do so. They never play the "what if" came but just take everything as it comes. Not, things are coming at us full force and we have not backup plans. And time and time again, the children will be affected adversely. However, at the school I work in, we are thinking outside the box. We are getting parent volunteers to help come up with ideas for small fundraisers to help the school achieve its goals. I think that the more that the parents and staff of each school pull together the better things will fare. Our children will not be left without a great education and will have a fun and educational school year. The goal is to never let the students see the cutbacks and through some creative thinking we can do just that!
