Vito Coppola, sounds like one of those names you use when signing into an hourly motel. Reminds me of Rosario, a fat smelly kid that lived on my street when I was growing up. Swear to God I think his younger sister had a mustache before her brothers did.

Actually, if you want to blame someone for the lack of Highway Patrol, you should blame Patterson, not Levy. I'm on Levy's side on this one. The LIE is a STATE owned and operated highway. It is the ONLY state highway I know of that has been patrolled by county police and not state police. It IS NOT THE COUNTY'S JOB TO PATROL A STATE HIGHWAY!
What is your problem understanding this. The county hasn't even been getting more money to patrol the LIE, so the county has been forced to pull resources off of county roads and neighborhoods, WHERE THEY SHOULD BE, and onto the LIE. Sorry, but I'm with Levy on this matter. The state being ignorant and ignoring the issue for so long is ridiculous. They've had plenty of time to come up with a plan to get more State Troopers ono the LIE. So if the blame falls anywhere, it falls on Patterson, not Levy. Levy's job is to control COUNTY money, and resources, and if the State won't help out, then in my opinion he's doing the right thing. If you don't like it, then call up the governors office and complain.

It is a very sad situation what is happening on New York roads. You can't open the paper with out reading about a fatality or serious injury from a DWI accident. All the education in the world will do nothing to eliminate DWI offenses. Harsh examples must be made of these offenders to make one think twice before getting behind the wheel while drunk, but with the extremely liberal judicial system hard at work, letting these offenders off the hook with the minimum, the problem will sadly continue.
DWI is a sad fact of life that will never change. If the death penalty hasn't deterred murderers, then nothing will deter DWI's.
The only thing you can do is stay off the roads whenever possible between the hours of 11pm and 5am, when statistically the most DWI accidents and arrests occur.

These state roads you are talking about are federally funded, not state funded! And Mr. Wonderful Levy pulled Experienced cops off the roads and replaced them with, inexperienced at this type of work, sheriffs (still county paid!) who are actually costing Suffolk taxpayers more between the Overtime that needs to be paid to man the roads (the sheriffs where asking for more manpower before they took the highways),(you dont see suffolk highest paid suffolk employees this year in the Levy backed Newsday...Ive seen the list, its all Sheriffs), and equip their cars and train them! All costing the taxpayers! This never had anything to do with money. Look back to when Levy was in the Legislature, his agenda was always to get rid of Highway Patrol, and to try to eliminate The SCPD. And now he is trying hard to accomplish that...at any cost.

All your facts don't change the underlying fact that the road is supposed to be patrolled by State Troopers. Not county cops, or sheriff's. That is a fact, and you can side step the issue all you want. State Troopers are supposed to patrol the LIE. NOT COUNTY COPS! It's not secret information.

That's ok, they're the idiots who either Drive while intoxicated themselves, or they'll wind up as the person getting hit by them.

I say they strap this hump to the same gurney as the hump who killed the cop last week and needle them both. THERE CAN BE NO SECOND CHANCES FOR VEHICULAR HOMICIDE.

very grown up to respond to this. instead of saying its a shame, they should die? who are you? maybe if you would have saw the boys in the ICU today as I did you'd be saying something different.
irresponsible yes, but that doesn't mean anyone deserve a death sentence. and remember... what ever you say comes back to you 10 fold. i hope your kids don't ever end up in that circumstance and 20 years down the road i say, "well maybe if they die they will learn."

60% of highway fatalites are in crashes that bear no relationship to alcohol what so ever. Evidently, a retard or a dotard impaired driver related crash doesn't make a newsworthy story.

When your grandpa or grandma is out driving the cadilac as bad as drunk driver but their impairment is not alcohol but dotardedness, can I shoot them in the head with a pistol like you would an alcohol impaired driver?

hey listen to me i happen to know vito personally and i happen to know that he is a good person and comes from a good hard working family. Im reading where most of you posting are from and it seems to be mostly south shore trash. You could only dream of living in a place like syosset/woodbury. Now im not trying to sound stuckup but instead of judging someone who you DO NOT even know why dont you just go back to work and try and earn some extra money and maybe just MAYBE you will be able to afford a home in syosset some day. nahhhh who are we kidding
This is the typical rant you hear about every gangsta thvg and goomba who's ever been locked up. Yet no specifics are ever provided to support what good people they are. Whenever I read about some kid messing up and someone says that he comes from a hardworking family, I immediately think of a spoiled, do-nothing, rich kid driving a car paid for by mommy and daddy.

Nope, never made a mistake that maimed my friend or put their lives in danger. I guess that's a privilege reserved for the North Shore. My, aren't you the lucky ones......
