It a shame that these schools are going to be closed. I went to Catholic school growing up in Manhattan. Living on the Island, it is hard to sent kids to Catholic school with the real estate taxes so high.

It is understandable for the diocese to close five of their schools if there is a surplus and unprofitable buildings. That leaves us enough well-located schools to send our children to. Parochial schools, I believe, are not doing as well, as say 10 years ago. We prefer our public schols in the village of Sea Cliff. Each to his own choice.

North Merrick sacred heart closing, this is good thing. save the public schools some $

Public schools still pay for Catholic school, books, bus service and allot of other stuff that comes from public schools budgets and local Tax $

The public schools DO NOT pay for books, bus service and "allot" of other stuff. The taxpayers, including the parents of the catholic school kids, pay for these items.

Nah ur wrong! Catholic schools are PRIVATELY FUNDED! Nice try! And, the parents who pay their students tuition for catholic school also have to pay PUBLIC school taxes.

What we sorely need HERE is a school administrator, either public or parochial, to straighten out this discripency in opinions about who pays what to whom.

Stop, Wondering, before you throw us off altogether. I meant a superintendent who volunteerily chooses just to inform us on this thread the tax and paymen situation for parochial and public schools. So don't blow a gasket.

Public schools do pay for Books, transportation at local catholic schools, shows how much you pay attention to your local taxes.it is part of a deal struck many years ago.

The Public schools budget needs to include items for Catholic schools don't be that clueless! Books, Buses, etc etc.

Thank you, Skool, for the information. And I don't believe it should be that way. Parents who want to send their children to a parochial instead of the public elementary school in their area SHOULD pay all the expenses in full. What and why is this deal struck up years ago?

The parents pay school taxes AND tuition. Their taxes cover the costs of educating public school children that live in their district as well as the buses and books needed at the catholic school. Get it now? Please reread if you still don't understand.

Don't hear anyone discussing why they're closing.
How about b/c the Catholic Church had to pay out millions of $ to the CHILD abuse VICTIMS of priests. The church did NOTHING to protect these kids. Still don't know why parents would let these 'men of god' near their kids. Guess priests think that since god forgives all sins that anything goes!

40 years ago my parents paid for everything for me to attend Catholic school to receive a sub standard education and emotional scarring.
Regardless of who pays for what these days,
NO MORE SISTER MARY ELEPHANT BOXING KIDS EARS BECAUSE THEIR PENMENSHIP IS NOT UP TO STANDARD!
Let's hear from some people who went to Catholic school in the 50's or 60's who can tell their tale of corporal punishment, physical and mental abuse at the hands of the nuns and priests.
Maybe parents started pulling their kids out of Catholic school in the past few years due to all the sexual abuse within the church that has come to light?

I think you have something there, Truth Fairy, a lot of the physical punishment and emotion trials have turned parents off on sending their children to parochial schools. Yes, the instances of child abuse and molestation have scared everybody, causing a real drop in the school enrollments. It will be difficult to turn this opinion around.

That would be an easy answer, but the reason the schools are closing are due to low enrollment. The low enrollment is a result of the economic climate and people can longer afford to shell out thousands of dollars each year for tuition.

Yes, public school funds pay for the books and transportation and the tuition goes to all the other expenses. However, don't forget that the Catholic school patents still pay property taxes on top of tuition. Even so, as more kids enter the public school system the public school expenses rise about another $15k per child per year!

The Parents' tax money pays for their catholic school children's books/buses/ etc. They would be getting them for free if they went to public school too! Nobody is giving them anything for free, unlike all the section 8 children

I'm laughing so hard right now! How right you are! "Yes, and you too can sew your seed with the Lord if you send me $279.00 ....BUT WAIT....you're worried about your family? I feel your pain, the Lord feels your pain! For only another $250.00 you can sew a seed for them with the Lord, too. WE TAKE CREDIT CARDS"
God bless you AND my big, fat checking account!
