alright if you've had bad experiences you can stay away...but you're really not in any position to tell others where there should and shouldn't go...let people decide for themselves..and stop spamming every review website with your opinion. glad your dogs fine, but you should really just deal with things like an adult and drop it. its quite puerile to belabor the unnecessary.
and above you never said that the doctor wished to put your dog to sleep, but in your last comment you did. so clearly, you're "pet advocate" and "nypetlover"
really?
What a shame. Such venom. We have been using Dr. Rana's services, including boarding, for 2 years now and LOVE him and his staff. He performed surgery on our dog for a ligiment tear and she is running again, happy and pain free. He treated our cat in a compassionate way when it was discovered he had liver cancer, and met us at the office late in the evening when we realized it was time to make that hard decision. He has never overcharged us, his billings are more than fair, and our dogs, who are not stranger friendly, walk right into that office for treatments or boarding and allow all the staff to pet them. I cannot say they are this receptive to any other vet or petsitters, which is why when we need to travel, they stay there. Before using Dr. Rana were told by another vet that our other cat was a "kidney" cat, when taken in for bloodwork as precurser to a dental treatment - even though she showed no signs of kidney disease. Well, we took her to Dr. Rana and he reran the bloodwork - and even spoke to the lab who agreed to rerun the tests a 2nd time when it came out NEGATIVE for any kidney disease. Dr. Rana called us personally to let us know the results and spent considerable time discussing the matter until we felt comfortable. The sad thing is that there IS a kidney cat out there - obviously the blood was mixed up at the other vet's office - and the other owners don't know it yet! I have never met a perfect person - vet doctor or neighbor. But come on people - Dr. Rana is an honorable and very skilled and compassionate vet. He has earned our respect many many times over.

Michelle,
I am dealing with this as an adult. I'm expressing my opinions in a civil manner on a web site where people discuss their experiences, good or bad. If I were not being an adult I would have taken the law into my own hands. No one has the right to hurt a member of one's family and walk away scot free. Do you know what the law is in this state? When a vet hurts or kills a pet through either incompetence, malpractice or greed there really is nothing one can do about it. They do not face criminal liability for their actions because they are regulated by the Department of Education. They don't face civil liability because pets are considered property in N.Y. State. Which means you can go to a vet and they can charge you $2000 for a procedure. If they negligently kill your pet and take them to court they only have to pay the market value of your pet. So if you got your pet from a shelter then the Vet would have to pay you $50. This is the only profession in the country where they have no consequences for their actions. They can have their cake and eat it too. This lack of criminal or civil liability leads many unscrupulous veterinarians to perform unnecessary procedures, overcharge clients, and deliver sub-standard care. Their claims that making them liable will lead to higher costs for pet owners, due to higher malpractice insurance and more tests is a scare tactic. Malpractice insurance for veterinarians for the whole year averages $350. Veterinarians already charge as much as possible and perform tests whether needed or not depending on how much money they want to make. They play on the pet owners love, attachment, and bond for their pets. They insist we pay thousands toward the care of our babies when their sick. But if the vet makes a mistake and we take them to court then their highly valued patient becomes a worthless piece of property. They can't have it both ways, but they do. My pet, family and I are victims of this kind of abuse. Like most people I was also ignorant of how the system works. Now you want me to keep quiet and go away and behave. Women in the 1910's were told to keep quiet and behave. African Americans in the 1960's were told to keep quiet and behave. What Women’s rights and Civil rights were before, now the struggle is for animal rights. I'm not saying pets should be given equal value as humans. I am saying that they hold a higher place then given by our laws and some of our veterinarians.
Wow with all you know you should become a vet hahaha, go get yourself a dozen more dogs at $50.00, your dog was probably worth 2 cents. P.S. No one cares what you have to say!

I found this by accident. Michelle and marie are obviously either Dr. Rana or one of his employees. I work in a business fueled by online reviews and can easily tell the difference. Who the heck has that much time on their hands, to so strongly come after somebody who almost lost their dog? There are two people on here with almost identical experiences that are not written by the same person, the sentence structure is very different, not so much in the case of the banshees. I think its obvious to anyone with half a brain what is going on here. I will not be getting back on this site, so don't waste your time blasting me. Try spending it giving the animals in your office quality care. petlover never once mentioned a lawsuit, so duh obviously these two idiots have some intimate knowledge of this situation. Of course one would sue for $10,000 in vet bills caused by negligence. Petlover, don't waste any more of your time fighting online with these people. Your lawyer can get the host of this website to find what address the computer used to attack you came from. Print all of this and get that info. best of luck to you.

Marie,
Dr. Jaipal Rana of Woodbury Road Veterinary Hospital is currently under investigation by N.Y. State. As such I don't want to go into more details at this time. I do want to respond to some of your points. I understand that pets are sometimes left alone at home. But at Dr. Rana's they are left alone for 12 to 16 hours during the night and weekends. I live nearby and pass by his place during errands and it's always dark and empty. Also, what is even more troubling to me is that pets who are there because their sick or had a procedure done are also left alone for long periods of time. AuntKitty's cats are a perfect example as was my dog. He was in that cage suffering and slowly dying as he was being poisoned by his own feces. Dr. Rana made a notation that he accidently cut my dog's rectum, so he knew full well the critical situation my dog was in. Yet they let him go 1 week, under their supervision, then in a panic took him to another hospital. No owner should risk their pets life in a place like this.
I agree with your point that vets have saved many lives. The vet at the other hospital performed a miracle by saving my dogs life. I cannot thank her enough. She worked diligently for 2 weeks before my dog began to turn the corner. So I'm not saying all vets are bad. Most are wonderful capable people. Dr. Jaipal Rana is incompetent, untrustworthy, and deceitful. I will gladly meet you anyplace anytime to show you personally all the proof and pictures that I have.
Just to clarify, I have only dealt with Dr. Rana at his Plainview facility, and there were no other vets there. I don't know about the Hempstead hospital. Thank you Marie for not personally attacking me on you last comments. There are points we can agree on and others that we disagree, but I would like to have a civil discussion with you. After all, my pet and I are victims of Dr. Rana. I have no personal animosity towards you.
WELL WELL WELL, SO SMART PANTS WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON DR ROBERT MONRACO AT OLD COUNTRY ANIMAL CLINIC WHO LEFT DOGS, BIRDS, RABBITS ALL ALONE DURING THE NIGHT AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED. I AM BEGINNING TO WONDER WHAT BOARDING ACTUALLY MEANS. SO NONE OF THESE VETS ARE THERE 24 HOURS. WOW I WOULDNT WANT TO BE IN DR MORACO'S SHOES NOW, I WOULDNT WANT TO BE IN THE CLIENTS SHOES EITHER, NOW I WOULD DIE IF ONE OF MY ANIMALS DIED DUE TO A FIRE, SURE THAT COULDNT HAVE BEEN PREVENTED EVEN IF 1 MEMBER OF THE STAFF WAS THERE. SO WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS PLACE.; I AM REALLY CURIOUS TO HERE YOUR OPINION.

I just wanted to give you an update. I DID bring my cts back to Animal Hospital of LLong Island in Hempstead after alot of thinking, and I feel I made the right decision. I brought one cat for one problem, and recently brought my other cat for a medical issue. I now can say with confidence that they are excellent, caring, and compassionate. The entire staff made my cats comfortabe and not cared. They did not do unnecessary tests just to line their ockets and my cats are both doing fine because of him. I am sorry that petlover had such a bad experience with her beloved dog, and because of that I was concerned about my cats. I am glad I gave Animal Hospital of Long Island a second chance.

i am sorry to hear of negative experiences with this vet. i for one, have only had great experiences with him. he has been outstanding in the care of my cats and other family member's dogs. when my maine coon was diagnosed with cancer, dr rana was gentle and supportive. the day i put him down, a very painful day, dr. rana was very compassionate and very caring and respected my pain. ever since that time, i've rescued two other cats and the only vet they've known is dr. rana. i've gone away for two weeks at a time and have left them at the woodbury location for boarding. upon my return, they are always in good health, groomed and ready to come home. my mother brings her cat to dr. rana too. we've come to trust him and really have confidence in his work. i have a friend who owns two pure breed bengals and will also only trust dr rana with these two 'pricey' babies.

personally, i've never felt that he is overpriced, if anything, always is fair. he did have a gentleman working in the hempstead office whom i did not care for. really nasty dude, but in the end, it is dr. rana who has been excellent. again, i am sorry that some folks have had bad experiences with this vet.

The guy that works for Dr. Rana who you say is nasty (the guy who lives upstairs from the animal hospital) I thought he was very cold and unfriendly when I first met him, but then we got to talking and he was actually very nice. I know he seems to give that standoffish impression of being unfriendly. Maybe he's just really quiet, I don't know. But there is a woman that works there named Alma who is so nice!

Still having great care by Dr. Rana. Boarding, grooming, dogs are always happy. Now a sick puppy who ate fertilizer...he is saving her and we cannot be grateful enough. I have to say that nobody is perfect...if you want a machine to work with your animal then take them to a mechanic. Dr. Rana is a caring, compassionate skilled vet and surgeon. I'm sorry that Michelle feels he did wrong by her and her dog. It sounds like a strange, unusual and extreme situation. I would like to hear Dr. Rana's side of the story.

I recently brought one of my kitties to Animal Hospital of Long Island in Hempstead again. This time it was an older cat who was very sick and dehydrated. Dr. Pal and Dr. Rana nursed her back to health. She was so sick I thought she was going to die. One week after bringing my cat there, Dr. Pal called me to ask me how my cat was doing. I thought she went above and beyond her duty as a veterinarian, and it showed true compassion and caring. I only have really great things to say about them and about their staff. This is just an update since last time.

i stongly disagree with nypetlover.
I have been to this vet multiple times and every single procedure he has done has been for the welfare of my pet. Both of my dogs owe their lives to him. He is very under priced, so anyone complaining about that should check out some other practices. He is the least greedy vet i have ever met, and has never charged me or anyone i know for the sole reason of making money. Many times, he performs procedures for free just for the welfare of my dogs. nypetlover: what did he do, charge you for dentistry? its a shame you couldn't take care of your dogs teeth in the first place. Or wait, was it a heartworm test? stool sample? all of these are necessary and your pet obviously wasn't up to date on these procedures. I strongly recommend Dr. Rana to anyone looking for high quality vet care for their pet at an extremely reasonable price.
I agree with Michelle. We have been taking our dogs to Dr. Rana for years now and find he is the most caring, least greedy, highly competent vet you will ever find on Lng Island. We first found Dr. Rana when we discovered a cancerous mass in our Golden's mouth on a Sunday afternoon. Searching for an emergency Vet we called Dr. Rana who was out with his family but met us at his office in Hempstead. After examining the dog he advised that he could try surgery but was not hopeful for a good result. We went ahead anyway trying to give our pet a chance. The cancer eventually came back as the doctor thought it would and the dog had to be put down. This procedure was handled with such compassion as I had not seen from our previous vet. Several years later another of our dogs had a similar tumor. This time we heeded Dr. Rana's advise and just let the dog go with dignity opting against the surgery. He could have easily gotten another fee from us but advised on what was best for the dog. I could go on...I don't usually post on these things but could not let this man be disparaged.

They say no news is good news, with that being said I can honestly say I'm happy not to see a single bad review in over a year. This hospital is under new management now going on a year! And a lot of things have changed. Service being the main one! I'd like to formally apologize to those who've had a bad experience, and even suggest for you to give us a second try. I promise your experience will not be the same. We practice a lot of patient doctor communication, with that being said we wont corral you in a corner with a astronomical bill. We try to make everything feasible and affordable, and will work with you to an extent. I encourage anyone who's been in the past year to honestly post their experience, in the long run we can't learn from our mistakes if we aren't aware of them. Come to The Animal Hospital of Long Island, see what hospitality feels like.-Alma (Manager)

Over the 10+ years I have known Dr. Rana and his wonderful staff, their was not one instance that I did not trust his judgment nor his expertise in caring for my beloved pets. I will never transfer care of my pets to anyone else but in the skillful hands of Dr. Rana and his great staff.
