HICKORY, N.C.-- Human remains were discovered near a busy highway in Hickory on Wednesday afternoon.

The remains were found behind the Lowe’s and Wal-Mart near the intersection of Interstate 40 and 26th Street Boulevard. Investigators are combing the woods behind the shopping complex for more clues.

Police are releasing few details about the case. They said the body had been in the woods for at least a week.

Investigators said the body was partially covered with dirt, but they are unsure whether someone tried to bury the body or whether erosion covered the remains.

Evidently no one is pushing the issue - they have to know who this person was by now... if I had a family member missing I sure would be standing at the door of the PD every day.

Maybe we should send the remains from Hickory to Chatum County- looks like it only takes a couple of days there; not months~!

Remains found in woods identified
From Staff Reports
Chatham County investigators have identified skeletal remains found Thursday as those of a Chapel Hill man missing since February 2006.
Dental records were used to identify Robert Raybun, 49, of 30118-A Settle Drive. His remains were found in woods near Mount Carmel Church Road. Two men walking through the area discovered the bones, about a mile from Raybun's home.

Raybun was last seen Feb. 16, 2006, at his home. Family members reported him missing. Although Raybun's death continues to be investigated, deputies do not think foul play was involved.

Why are they not releasing who was found behind Lowes?

It could be an issue with notification of next of kin. This at times does prolong the release of information to the public. If this was a missing person from another area, or if this person has yet to be reported missing for whatever reason(homeless, etc.) this will prolong what they release to the public. Also if they are working the case actively they may be taking longer so that they can continue the investigation without releasing too much to the public as not to hinder their "work".

They should have told us by now whose remains were found. The news reporters in Hickory are really very poor at keeping people informed. That is the reason we stopped taking a paper -- why bother when they don't print the NEWS?

THIS WAS JUST RELEASED- IF ID WAS FOUND WITH THE BODY THEN THAY WOULD KNOW WHO IT WAS; GUESS THAT WAS ANOTHER THING THE PRESS GOT WRONG

Skeletal Remains Found in July Now a Murder Investigation
Police say human bones found in Hickory in July are the remains of a murder victim.
.
No other details are being released.

We still don't know if the person was a man or a woman.

A survey crew found the remains behind a Lowe's Home Improvement store on 15th Avenue Place Northwest.

Investigators say the victim could have been there for up to a year.

Now if they know who....why will they not tell? Looks like the ID found on the remains would give them a clue??

This was on GOBLUERIDGE.NET today:

Skeletal remains found behind the Hickory Wal-Mart are the result of a homicide, police say. Hickory police are not saying what links the remains to foul play, but are actively investigating. The partially clothed skeleton was discovered July 25. Investigators have yet to identify the body. Anthropologists at Western Carolina University are studying the body and results of their research, as well as the autopsy, could take several weeks.
