What is "huge bill" to you -$300? Did you hire him to get you off for a speeding ticket where you were clearly wrong but wanted to "fight it" because you think so highly of yourself you can do no wrong. Lawyers are human, the court system is unpredictable. I bet the lawyer makes so much bling your pathetic bill wouldn't even make one of his car payments. I bet he got a judgment against you for the money - I'd check your credit and court records weak minded fool.

The depiction of Mr. Lehman in the article is difficult to work up any sympathy for. There are high-priced incompetents as well as bargain basement wizards in any profession. Cheap lawyer jokes here are just too easy and classless. He has a right to an attorney. He doesn't have the right to knock out the attorney. As said earlier, he proved the prosecution's case.

Hey, if you wanted someone that cares, then please pay for it out of your own pockets and not via taxpayers money. Otherwise, don't do the crime!

This case is a real shocker. The defendant attempted to draw the court back to the law of the jungle with his attack on the innocent attorney. I almost think that the judge was too lenient with him after the attack. Most of us would have thrown the s.o.b. in jail.

6 months for pounding on a lawyer will probably be cause for more like behavior in the court room [some days being well worth the cost]!

Not defending either side. The defendent could have been guilty or not. Public defenders are paid out of the same pockets as the prosecutors. They have a duty to defend anyone who can't afford an attorney. Some are very dedicated, some are not. Private attorneys are the same, some very good, some only in it for the money.$300.00 for an attorney? Maybe for a parking ticket. Most TC attorneys fees start at $7000 -$8000 just for easy cases. Get charged with a felony even a victimless crime and you won't find one for less than $10,000 worth anything.$20,000 and up will get a good attorney most of the time. But sometimes not. I'll bet the top guys won't touch a case for less than $50,000.

And he only got an additional six months for the assault? His sentence should have doubled. Send him away and throw away the key.
If he had been a black man in the cities, they would have. Or better yet they would have found a reason to shoot him in the court room. With his long criminal history he should be lock up for a good long time.

I don't know what this lawyer did or didn't do. But what is it when it comes to lawyers? They are either some of the nicest, hardest working people I've ever met, or some of the biggest lying, scum of the earth bunch you could meet. The things that bother me most, is that getting it right doesn't seem to matter much of the time. It's winning that matters. Huh? I ran into a female attorney in Wadena County who wrote me an offer on an inattentive driving ticket for my son that said she talked to the police chief and he told the officer to write a ticket because it was required. I talked to the chief and he told me no such thing happened. When I called her out in court, she yelled out, "your honor, I would never do that!" Not only would she, she did! Luckily, the judge figured this out. I had an assistant city attorney meet my son in the hall when he showed up to argue a $283 fireworks ticket that he planned to plead not guilty on. The attorney and the officer met him in the hall and told him if he didn't plead guilty, they'd tack a fleeing a police officer onto it! I approached her about this later, and she gave me the usual, "I don't have time to talk to you, and I was just doing my job" line. We wonder why the public becomes angry with our public servants. They don't want to figure out how to deal with something, they just want to win and walk away with a chunk of our money. Next time they need someone to call in a drug dealer or a burglary, maybe they'll figure out why I won't help out.

While it's completely aberrant what the defendant did, for the judge to arbitrarily take away his Sixth Amendment right to council is a bit too much.

To Mike of Wadena:

This is the way it works today. Win at all costs and someone has to pay for the time. They play games with your head all the time and get paid by the taxpayers to do it. I really wonder if anyone working for the state in the justice system is above board anymore. I doubt it. Unfortunately they take the job for the regular paycheck, complete immunity for everything they do in the courtroom, and never having to look for clients. The lawyers on the other hand have to work with them everyday and either make concessions to stay in the loop or buck them every chance they get. There is the difference between scum and the good ones.

And you're right....once you've been through the system for anything, feeling you should help in anyway drag someone else through that abberation is a joke. Never going to happen. And they wonder why people don't show up to testify even when subpoenaed.

This attack should of never happened. Maybe he wanted to have this case thrown out by doing this act of beating up a person. Mark is a good person and a good lawyer. As far as him working as a public defender he giving back to the system and helping the people. If you have a problem with a lawyer go to the Lawyer Responsibility's Board. If you have a problem with the police go to Internals Affairs unless you live in Minneapolis. They should of change this department to Damage Control years ago when Robert Olson ran it. Maybe Mark should run for Governor on the republican side. I could run on the democrat side. Groettum for Governor !

He got an additional six months for beating up a lawyer?
Avoiding all the jokes....
Why was he not charged with it as a seperate offense and hopefully a longer sentance.
I suspect that it shouldn't be too difficult to convict a known person when there were that many reputable witnesses in the room.

Mike,

City attorneys dont' take chunks of your money, the city/ county/ state takes it. a public interest attorney has no personal financial interest in any case.

Furthermore, this is an adversarial system, the attorney was just doing her job. Most likely, ff she did what the opposing side wants her to, she would lose her job.

I would guess that if you spent half the time making sure that your precious snowflake stays on the right side of the law as you did complaining about the system then you wouldn't even have to deal with it!

Hmmm.

It would have been funnier if the judge denied him another attorney but reduced his sentence by a year for justifiable self-defense.

What really happened is he didn;t get his own way and he threw a temper tantrum by beating his attourney.

He was not being ignored, his requests were not being ignored, he is just an idio who deserves to be in jail for many decades.
