Front page of today's paper. I hope it is a misprint. The top students at TCHS only scored 1720 on their SAT. That is pitiful. Nothing wrote here speaks louder than that reality. 1720 will not get you into a major university. It's not even close. UGA Average this year will be 1850 plus. Georgia Tech 1950
If this does not wake up the parents in this town nothing will. The best TCHS can turn out will probably be forced to attend YHCC for two years to gain admittance to a real college.
God help these children and Damn those of you who are responsible for this.

You are right. it did get them in. They are just in the bottom 25%. The Average is 1860. The lowest will be about 1650. I called a friend after I read the article. She said one of them might be going to Ga.Tech and there is only one other student that scored above 1600. Now that is pitiful.
I mean no disrespect to the children. They are doing the best they can with the tools they are provided. My hat is off to these two kids for their hard work.
My point is 1720 is not even average at UGA and they are the smartest kids in the school. That is the thing about the SAT. There is no parent help, no guidance Counselor messing with weighting the GPA for her buddy's kid, and no guessing about who is top in their class. It is a true measure of how the student compares to the rest of the Nations kids and who TCHS compares as a whole.
God Bless them both and God Help the rest.

You people use the SAT as if its an godly ruling of how smart a student is. Have you seen the tests lately? They're really hard! The questions purposely trick you, and without a proper SAT prep course like city schools have, it takes a lot of effort to even score a 1700.

For instance, I know a kid who goes to Towns who scored a 1650 on the SAT but a 28 on the ACT. Some kids are really smart but don't do well on standardized tests.

Some city kids in AP courses only make 1700's too. IT'S NOT JUST TOWNS COUNTY.

Yes I agree Towns County schools are bad. But stop making the kids feel like idiots because they aren't going to a school in Atlanta. They are on this site READING THIS. Its not their fault they were born here and have to go to a school that only cares about graduating their students, not preparing them for college.

Sad when the only schools they aspire to are UGA or GT.

The SAT is a very good measuring stick of a students potential in College. You must be smart and understand testing methods used by the SAT and in most College courses. It's not easy. Neither are courses and tests at real colleges and Universities.
The ACT was developed at the request of College Coaches who needed a way of getting their boys in school who couldn't score a 500 on the SAT.
The ACT is accepted at most schools and 28 is a good score. So is 1650 on the SAT for anyone who attended Towns County Schools. 1600 here gets your name on a plaque in the office at TCHS. At a good school 1600 gets you after school help and another test date.
There are so many problems at TCHS the low SAT scores are just the end result and proof. For the first time in my life I am hearing parents express concern. I don't know if it was the tax increase or they have finally realized the school is in serious trouble. TCHS could be the top public school in the State with the proper leadership. They have none of the inner city issues to deal with and plenty of money. Instead of spending it properly to build a great school system. Our School Board chooses to spend it on a welfare program for their relatives.
Good job Star Students and the rest of the class of 2013. You will do just fine when you move away form here. The world is full of healthy communities with great schools, good jobs and honest people.

GT is consistently ranked in the top 10 engineering schools in the World. UGA is a good solid school academically. Several of the majors offered there rank in the top 10 for American Universities.

Unfortunately most colleges courses use Standardized testing. Therefore, attending a top University is out of the question for someone who has difficulty testing. I've heard the excuse for years that someone doesn't test well. Either you know the material or you don't. Just an excuse for less than acceptable results.

I heard from a friend that there's a city kid who scored a 2200 on the SAT but has a 2.0 GPA because he doesn't care about school. There's a lot more than "knowing material" to have "acceptable results".

Who are you trying to kid? Do you think "they" really give a damn about you or your child, or their education?

I read where the script consultants for the "Big Bang Theory" are all under the age of 22 and have not graduated from college (yet).

In a way, it's scary (not really) there are kids that bright running loose in society.

Here, a geek would get the crap beat out of him once a week by the BMOC and ignored by teachers because he'd be so much trouble for them, intellectually.

That's to say that around here, if your child is exceptionally bright, teach him or her how to hide it, how to dumb down on tests and otherwise act "normal."

It might comfort them to be reminded that high school won't last forever and when they get to college and the real world, they'll appreciate the gift God gave them.

Stop the excuses Locals! If you want your kids to prosper and have anything in life (more then what this town has to offer) You have to demand more for them! More from the kids, more from the schools and more from your local government. Getting on here and spewing nonsense about people from other places talking bad about your children, just shows your ignorance and your inability to read and understand a paragraph! maybe instead of hating people from other places and their values, you should open your eyes and take what they have to offer. It is obvious to anyone with a decent IQ, people that come here from other places have some great ideas and we could learn from making some changes around here. Just Sayin'

Georgia ranks 48th in the nation in SAT scores. Seems like it's a local and state problem. In other words Georgia's education system sucks.

There are some great teachers at the school. They are doing all they can to make it better. The old guard keeps fighting to lower the bar. Someone is leaking a lot of information. I hear they cringe every time their dirty laundry shows up here or on Hellawassee.com
