Went to the new bar across from the marina last night. The place was packed. Packed full of trashy people. About half the crowd was smoking in the building. A deputy stood there doing nothing about it. So we filed a complaint on line with the state. The law says you can't smoke within 25 feet of a building.
The only good thing about the people smoking is they will die a early death. Hopefully before they breed.

I'm no smoker, but complaining about smokers at a bar is like complaining about sand on the beach. Go find a bistro if you're that concerned about smelling smoke.

Thanks for the public service announcement.

Don't go there if you don't like it.

Nice, and unexpected. Usually you see those bars in south Florida and the keys and southern California - not in a small town in the mountains.

According to the Beverage agent I spoke with, it will be closed sooner than that if they are allowing smoking within 25 foot of the building.
I was hoping for a classy place to take a date. What I found was a smoke filled joint full of white trash.

Funny. No walls. Open. Breeze blowing - and it's "smoked filled?" How's that?

Methinks you've never been there and that you're full of crap.

Try Michealee's if you are looking for a "classy" place. It is overpriced. The food sucks, but there are a lot of pretentious people there. You will fit right in.

You can always go to Brasstown. Another overpriced place full of pretentious people. At least the food is good though.

So ... you are chastising someone and calling them dumb, but you don't even know there are sophisticated bars in this world?

Have you been anywhere? All bars are not honky tonks.

Try a bar at a resort, a fancy hotel, or a fancy restaurant.

Right. People who appreciate good food and can afford it are "pretentious".

Good grief.

I think your comment is pretentious.

This is Hiawassee, not Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, nor any other big city where there are a lot of options. I use those cities as examples because they are close by.

We could discuss places like Manhattan, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and other large cities that offer many choices.

Hiawassee is a rural community with a very small population. There are not many choices here.

The OP is complaining about smoking and white trash at an outdoor sandbar. I don't know about you, but I do not expect "classy" and "tiki bar" to go hand in hand. Especially up here.

I expect to see and experience more of a "Margaritaville" atmosphere at a tiki bar. You know, more laid back. If the OP doesn't like it, then he/she should find another place to go or stay at home.

Good luck finding good food here. My favorite restaurant shut down several years a go. Nothing has come close to it since. The owner lacked people skills, the service was sketchy at best. But the food rocked and was reasonably priced.

By putting "pretentious" in quotation marks, Comical was mocking the comment by the OP, IMO. E.g.- you might have read it wrong.

Question: I assume the bar will be (mostly) closed when it's raining cats and dogs (or even kittens and puppies), when there are strong winds in the area and around September or October when the temps drop, never mind the owners, how can a server or bartender make enough to survive on during the limited hours/days and down months - have a cover charge, charge outlandish prices for drinks, add on a 50% tip to each bill, require a minimum or better still, and this might work; hire cute, well built little servers from the college and have them wear orange short-shorts and tight tees? Bikinis would be more fitting come to think of it, thongs better and if they're topless, it might keep the temperature warm and toasty, and the place packed with horny bar flys, year around!

Maybe they plan on installing out-door fireplaces or a temporary dome over the place? Something?

We have visited both the Blue otter and the Sand Bar. The Sand Bar could be a fun place. Their choice to allow smoking will prevent us and many other from ever going back. For every smoker today there are fifty five non-smokers. That makes for a very questionable business model. It shows a lack of understanding by the management and staff of the hospitality business. I hope the local crowd can support them because the tourists will not tolerate the smoke or crowed that was there the night we went. We seen two families with teen age children which is against the law if you allow smoking.
The Blue Otter was obviously designed inside by someone who lacks any understanding of the Restaurant business. The best views and seating are now a service window. The brick service wall is to high and prevents most diners from seeing the lake in the other half of the building. The food and service are average. The decor made me feel like I was eating in a warehouse. They will need to really improve if they plan to make it in Hiawassee. Their bar was loud and uninviting. For some reason everyone thinks they need a live band. Most I have heard from around here, are simply loud obnoxious noise. I can go stand by the road if I want to hear that.
Everyone can get by in the summer. The cream will rise in the Spring and Fall. Nobody makes money around here in the winter.
