I saw that too. I'm very disappointed in all those that were a party to this. What is supposed to be the benefit to the citizens of this county?

Does this ring a familiar bell;

(c) The board may request additional clerical assistants and staff as needed to carry out
efficiently the duties and functions of the board on either an independent contract basis or
as county employees, to be determined by the commissioner. The commissioner shall be
responsible for determining the pay and salary of
all clerical assistants and staff of the
board. Any such persons shall be hired by the commissioner, who shall consider the
recommendation of the board, and such clerical assistants shall be at-will, part-time
employees of the commissioner.
(d) The commissioner shall provide suitable offices and equipment and funding sufficient
to employ the staff and other employees as may be necessary."

Sure wish the citizens would have had the opportunity to have a say in this before the backroom decision was made with Jenkins.

This is what has just been put into the commissioner's hands:

O.C.G.A.§ 21-2-40 (2007)

§ 21-2-40. General Assembly authorized to create board of elections and board of elections and registration in any county

(a) The General Assembly may by local Act create a board of elections in any county of this state and empower the board with the powers and duties of the election superintendent relating to the conduct of primaries and elections.

(b) The General Assembly may by local Act create a board of elections and registration in any county of this state and empower the board with the powers and duties of the election superintendent relating to the conduct of primaries and elections and with the powers and duties of the board of registrars relating to the registration of voters and absentee balloting procedures.

Pay particular attention to paragraph B.

Here is a portion of the new law as signed by our governor:

SECTION 3.This Act shall become effective on September 1, 2008. Upon this Act becoming effective, the judge of the probate court of Towns County and the existing board of registrars of Towns County shall be relieved of all powers and duties to which the board succeeds by the provisions of this Act and shall deliver to the board all equipment, supplies, materials, books, papers, records, and facilities pertaining to such powers and duties.
Who is going to be on this new board? By whom will they be appointed? Who will control this board?

Clarkesville, GA - Terry Rogers, of Clarkesville, announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination for Georgia’s 50th district State Senate seat. The 50th District is composed of Banks, Franklin, Hart, Habersham, Rabun, Stephens, Towns counties and a portion of White County. This seat is currently held by Nancy Schaefer. Terry Rogers cited that his intention to run for this seat was made after listening to the concerns of the people of this district. To copy your quote "Thought that you might want get your facts straight"!

The conversation was about CHARLES JENKINS (D) of the Georgia HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

Chris Sweat of Hiawassee was a Republican running against a someone from Blairsville, also a Republican, in the primary. The winner would then face Jenkins in November. Sweat dropped out of the race about a month ago.

Those ARE the facts!
