Here's just some of the things we stand to lose:

1. State and federal grants to the SO.
2. Grants to Meals On Wheels.
3. State and federal contributions to the Food Pantry.
4. Block grants to the county for industrial development.
5. Supplemental (financial) assistance for the hospital.
6. Reduced school funding from the state and federal government.
7. Shortened unemployment benefits.
8. No winter heating assistance.
9. Cut back or elimination of the transportation service for the county.
10. Cut backs in the school lunch program.
11. Reductions in Medicaid.
12.

There are probably a dozen other things, at least, and you can bet your sweet ass it's going to come as a rude shock to most as they kick in. Towns County has a stagnated, welfare based county government and therefore it's expendable in the eyes of the state and federal government. Just to maintain the current size of the local government, for instance, will require a big increase in property taxes.

the future looks really dark there. they have become accustom to getting checks in the mail box, they never ever thought what will we do when the checks stop comming.
them move ins thats still there will be moving out soon. the resources offered is "NOT" worth the cost.
looks like the one sheriff an one police is on its way back in.
how they gona keep paying all them salaries without them checks?
my guess is that at least 60 per cent of the budjet will be funded with them checks thats gona stop comming.

This is so complex it may boggle your mind but when the "move ins" go south for the winter months, they don't take their houses with them - but they have to keep paying property taxes even though they don't use "services" (schools, fire, police, EMS, utilities, etc.). ;-)

As sad as it is, they're the major source of new revenue coming into the county, not counting state and federal hand outs, which have been drying up and may disappear completely in 2013. When that happens, a 6.3 mill increase in property taxes even based on inflated (artificial) evaluations will be getting off light.

Happy new year!

Don't make it worse than it is.

"...But your paycheck still will be smaller, because the 2% payroll tax holiday is expiring. Starting in January, workers will once again have 6.2% of their wages up to $113,700 withheld to pay for Social Security, up from the 4.2% rate that's been in effect for the past two years...."

http://money.cnn.com/2012/12/30/news/economy/...

The with-holding tax accounts for 32% of what the government rakes in and they "borrow" it mainly from the SS Trust Fund at a $90+ billion a year clip. To date, "we" own the trust fund over $2.3 TRILLION! To keep it solvent for a few more years it's been proposed to allow the Trust Fund to borrow against what the federal government owns it.

ARE THEY INSANE?

The net result of allowing the "holiday" expire is, of course, more money for them to spend PLUS even more if they reduce the amount SS and Medicare pays out, which they're planning to do, and at the same time they're telling us they're going to "save" Social Security by extending the age for benefit, raising premiums and co-pays and reduce COLA by some magic formula they've concocked.

YEAH, THOSE BASTARDS ARE INSANE!

Tax collections are way off in Georgia due to the economy. Georgia state legislators in order to get re-elected to office have to show the conservatives just how tough they are on increased taxes. So they make cuts to programs like education. Most old farts that complain the loudest about taxes could give a crap about education. They didn't get one so why should they pay for someone elseís? So local school boards have to raise taxes to keep the school doors open. The local school board looks bad, the folks in Atlanta don't, thatís the game they play proving they care about nothing but themselves.

If you'll go with the numbers and follow the paper trail, you'll see...

"...Sales and Use Tax: Net Sales and Use Tax collections for October totaled $439.25 million ó up from $437.25 million in October 2011 ó for an increase of $2 million, or 0.5 percent. The monthly distribution to local governments totaled $380.5 million, which was a decrease of $7.5 million, or -1.9 percent, compared to last yearís distribution. The total distribution included a pro rata distribution of $1.2 million pursuant to state law...."

... that the amount Towns County receives (pro rata distribution) is down considerably and will continue to decline as other counties recover. Meanwhile, operating costs remain constant which will require more local taxes to maintain the schools at their present level.
