Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

If there was any doubt that rising prices and a souring economy are affecting South Florida families, more proof has arrived: The number of households using food stamps is up 26 percent in Palm Beach County ...

F'in State of Florida. I was denied food stamps because I wouldn't sign up to have my ex wife hounded by them (the State) to give me cash assistance. I've been divorced 10 years. When does this run around end? I'd be really upset if she came after me 10 years later. How does everyone else just walk into the State office and walk out with $400 in assistance? Tell me. I need to put some food into my 2 kids.

I know of a dying man who was penniless and taken in by a neighbor that was denied until after weeks of going to the office and complaining.I also know another person who drives a mercedes suv and has food assistance. The fraud and and illegals need to be eliminated NOW.The economy can't stretch to cover those who do not need assistance.

Sorry, but this is not correct. Its pretty simple people; "Dont breed em if you cant feed em"! Got it? I have no children because I feel that I can not yet adequetly provide for them, thats called responsibility. I couldnt imagine having all the children I like and, when it gets tough to feed them, I just bang on YOUR door for HANDOUTS. NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!!!!!!!!

If you have a 50% drop-out rate in schools, if you import millions of unskilled poor people from countries with high crime and murder rates and you choke off business with high taxes and incompetent public managment, you get lots of people on welfare. Eventually you drag down producers to the point where they can't produce and you have a socialist quagmire like Cuba where there is no hope for improvement. That's what we have in South Florida, world capitol of crime and corruption. Soon to be the home of collapse and deep poverty.

Three kids and no husband at the age of 23. Hatians and Hispanics recent arrivals and no skills but burping out babies. Good idea to look the other way when they break into your home and take your life just like it is a good idea when they break into your country and take your job.
Sad.

This is terrible. I don't see our country getting back to pre bush level of income for another 20 years, if ever again.

Here's another interesting FACT.
Any parent can qualify their children for FREE LUNCH (which you and I pay for, too) simply by filling out a form distributed at our public schools--in English, Spanish and Creole--NOBODY VERIFIES THE INCOME REPORTED!! Did you know that? Well, all the free lunch and food stamp cheaters do!!!

"Behind these numbers are real people, like Fallon Hayes, of Dania Beach, a single mom with two jobs and three kids."
"And her long commute to South Beach, where she is a bartender on the weekends, is decimating her paycheck."

Uh, who decided to have three kids and be a bartender? Now we gotta bail her out because she chose the wrong way? Man oh man. How unfortunate for those kids.

Here's another"- Lachelle Jean, a 40-year-old Delray Beach nurse's assistant, is one such person in need. After leaving an abusive boyfriend, she said she has been living out of a motel with her two teenagers while saving money to put down a deposit on an apartment."

And now us normal folks who chose to do well and work hard have to bail these folks out who chose wrong. That's just great.

I don't see a spouse who was killed or died of natural causes or the like, i see a bunch of people who got themselves in a mess and now want the public to bail them out. I don't like it one bit.

BIG PAY NO WORK wrote:
Let all those food stamp people become firemen and get rich.
During the last budget year, 464 people in the Palm Beach county's workforce made more than $100,000. About 68 percent of that group worked for fire-rescue.
Fire-rescue workers, like other county employees, receive benefits under the state's retirement system. Benefits are paid based on a person's average total compensation, which is calculated by averaging the five highest years of pay - including overtime.
Sid Dinerstein, chairman of the Palm Beach County Republican Party and critic of the county's budget, said it's a widely talked-about "game that's played in every county" that overtime goes to those who are close to retiring and need an extra boost.
"That's the scam," he said. "It's a rip-off of the taxpayers."
You are a great recruiter! Why don't you become one!?

The root cause of high gas prices and high food prices is our failure to drill for oil. Blame an environmentalist!

The average food stamp payment is $31 -$35 per week per person; about $10 less for kids getting free school breakfast and lunch. I have been living off less than this per person for years and years. Shop/eat sale items, use coupons....NO PREPARED FOOD. And I'm in Wisconsin where I only have access to the cheaper green markets that I love to shop when in Florida.
CAN be done with no problem if you try.
Don't understand these single moms...where's the dad's contribution?? I suppose the rest of us are picking up that tab.
