Neil Rogers: The man behind the radio mic

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

The strangest afternoon I've ever experienced was a Saturday at Hialeah race track with Neil Rogers, who announced his retirement this week after more than three decades on South Florida radio.

Neil was great. I had the opportunity to speak with him at a few Panther games. Unfortunately when he started to take more time off and left George at the helm, It got too boring. Neil will be missed.

Maybe I caught his act when he was already over the hill, but it never impressed me. It was like listening to any old guy whine and complain about his life. What a bore. Glad he's gone so that they can replace him with someone with something to say.

The only thing more pathetic than Neil was his listeners. He would tell a lame joke then have this dramatic pause. My only hope is he stays in Canada and we never hear from him again.

It's a shame he's retired...I laughed my A Z Z off every day for 15 years whole working for a major Florida utility....one day a superior told me to quit calling him a d o u c h e b a g on Neil's show....wihile I've forgotten his name....he's still a DB!

Like many entertainers, when the switch is ON, they are ON....and when off....dead silent...that's Uncle Neil

Most people that don't like called his show and were quickly embarassed. But that was the beauty of it.

He was Don Rickles of the radio waves and some can't take it.

Great article, Tom.

Neil's a legend and I wish him well in his retirement. It wasn't a Neil Rogers show without something wonderfully outrageous or controversial. He's right, though; the FCC crackdown really hamstrung the show.

Great article Tom, nice to remember him in a good way.

His popularity waned when he became a left wing supported and bashed the right. There is no left wing radio show that survived because none of them back up what they're saying with sound bites. Have to realize that about 50% of the people still support the republican party.

Polls blew, and what really did him in was reading articles in a mono tone voice.

But yeah, back in the day when he ragged on city officials, had pig reports, and played all those bits, he was the king.

Daily Horoscope for December 2

Capricorn

The Gemini Full Moon brings situations at work to a head; there may be a sudden event that shakes up the office, but you should be free and clear of any real trouble. The real issue is the one you have most likely been avoiding: what sort of state is your health in? Have you been buying larger pants each year for the past three or four years in a row? Is your idea of strenuous exercise scooping hard ice cream out of the carton? If so, it's time for some changes.
