First of all, this is AMERICA. We are an English speaking country. If they want Miami to be primarily spanish speaking, why dont these people go back to their own spanish speaking countries? Regardless of how these spanish people came here, there should've been a law ensuring that these people learn english before conducting business here in this "english speaking country". You say that the population is 58 percent spanish speaking, but are they AMERICAN CITIZENS???? Most of the crime in Miami is predominantly spanish people. Where is the logic? That is why America is the way it is...anyone can come here and try to change the rules, instead of us putting our foot down and make others conform to OUR rules.

I will like to say something about it. I moved to Miami in 1982 from Pto. Rico. I did not know how to speak english but I could understand a little. When I first came to Miami, I went to MDCC to learn english for a year, then I started working and the rest I learned on the streets. I am totally against of Spanish to be the first language in the country, I think that everybody needs to learn more than one language. Firstable, you are not in your country and this is like running out the americans from their home. It is like move over, this is my territory now. This is wrong!!! After 1982, Miami went from a peaceful place to little habana market place. I do not care if any cuban feels offended but is the truth, I know this is a free country but get real. Now at 44yrs old, I am trying to learn how to speak haitian because it is good how to speak more than one or two language and I am trying for my kids to learn more than one language also.

"Come to AMERICA" where freedom rings.......... What is this country coming to. I can't believe that no member of congress has ever passed a law making "ENGLISH" the official language of The United States.

When my grandparents came over on the "Boat" to America from Italy, they like millions of others from foreign lands were forced to learn the American language which was English. Sure, in thier private lives and home they spoke thier native tongue.

People from Latin countries when they come to America for a better life, are not made to learn English as the language that all our ancestors had to learn in order to work, learn and live.

It;s amazing, now in 2008, Latin Americans, and all Spanish descent citizens do not have to learn English when immigrating to America. I was born in America, and feel like a foreigner in my own countrie.

Why is everything in English, then in Spanish. Why not in Italian,Gaelic,Yidish, Chinese, etc..

Has anyone ever gone to Miami, Hialeah,Kendall, etc. Engliush speaking people are the minority. Try going in a restaurant, or a store and ask the clerks for a meal or anything, and you get the same answer. "NO SPEAK ENGLSIH".

I am not prejudice, but I feel, that when someone Imigrates to AMERICA, one must learn the English language. Sure keep your native tongue, talk amoung each other in your native tongue, but when I go to a store in America, I want the people that work there to speak the language of our forefathers.
I am appauled that my kids, have to learn Spanish in school. The language of thier ancestors is not offered or encourage. I refuse to learn a language i do not want to speak, and will not allow my kids, to learn a languge that they do not want to learn.

Wake up America, before we know it, the American born in America will soon become a minority. Spanish will eventually be the offical language of the United States. When that day happens it will be a sad day for all, and a slap in the face for all the imigrants that came over to Jones Island and learned the English Language.

It's time we take our community back! It is so disrespectful of these people to not learn the language of this country which is ENGLISH NOT SPANISH!!! I just love it when you hear a story on the news and the children speak english but the parents don't. You realize the family has been here for 10 years and not one of them has tried to learn english because the story has to be translated for us. Why the hell couldn't they learn english in the 10 years they have been here??? Take a freaking class, how hard is that? The spanish community is at fault too. Those who have learned english should start encouraging their friends/family who don't to start taking classes or something. They came here for a "better life" and then they turn our communities into their prior country and our government does nothing to stop them from doing so. Our government, businesses, department stores, grocery stores, hospitals, police/fire departments only cater to them by speaking spanish and translating everything and that is wrong. We are the only country to do this. If I go to my husband's native coutry in Europe I have to speak their language and my husband learned english when he came to this country. Most people from spanish speaking countries seem to be the only people who refuse to learn english. Most people from other countries learn to speak english when they come here. Bottom line is our government will do nothing about it and that's sad. The only way to make some form of change is from the people within the community to stop translating everything and stop speaking spanish to them, then they will have to learn english. It is about being respectful of the country that allowed you to make a new life here and the people who live in this country who have embraced your culture, food and spirit.
how could you say that

Why, in The United States of America, where english is the primary language, should I have to learn to speak spanish?...If I lived in country where the primary language was spanish then I would learn it. Miami is becoming a third world nation and I can't wait until I can leave here when I am able to retire.

I could rant forever in opposition to the foreigner's and Spanish speaking community's attitude toward language. Instead of that I will just say this:
I would NEVER travel to Japan, Turkey, Chile, Russia, even Cuba and expect them to learn English so that I may communicate with them. I would take it as my priority and responsibility to learn their customs, their beliefs, their language. I would never take over their land and expect them to cater to me.
I feel like it's pure laziness and ignorance when individuals immigrate to America and neglect to learn english.
It's so aggravating when spanish speakers get frustrated with me and yell at me because I don't speak their language.
I support immigration, especially when its in effort to better your life, but do not move to a foreign land and demand that people learn your language so that YOU may live easier.
So much for not ranting. But, this issue is huge and needs to be addressed.

Anyone who comes into this country should make an honest effort to learn English. To believe otherwise is foolish; as it is foolish to believe that Anglos are leaving because of our use of Spanish. They are leaving because they don't like us. I look Anglo and speak (fairly decent) English. You should see how people change their demeanor when they hear my accent. My wife's work in consumer assistance usually drags her into conversation with Anglos and Jews, who tell her in no uncertain terms that they would rather talk with someone who knows how to speak English.

My birth family was originally from Miami. I was born here in 1966. Shortly after my birth my parents moved to Atlanta, Ga. I married an Air Force pilot and 4 years ago he was transferred to an Army headquarters located in Doral. When we received his orders to SouthCom, I was incredibly excited to be returning to my place of birth as I had never ventured this far south in Florida since leaving as a baby....Living here has been a heart-rending experience. Living in Kendall has not been a "homecoming" on any level. When my husband was stationed overseas we were more welcome in foreign lands. Miami is a harsh, disrespectful, seething mass of English-illiterate, biased immigrants. My husband, my soldier, is reviled and sneered at, especially when he is in uniform. My family is treated with contempt for not speaking the Spanish language and our overtures toward others are simply rejected. Some "service" people simply walk away from us. There is no kindness. I have not even begun to address the cultural clash that came from my children trying to immerse themselves at the public schools. This culture of hatred and animosity toward "Gringo-Americans" is shocking, hurtful....and we can't wait to return to the America my husband is in service to, and freely signed up to defend, "from enemies both foreign and domestic." Miami is not representative of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that we know and love. We yearn to leave south Florida and will never return to this contemptuous, third-world annex.

No big deal! If you don't like Miami, there is plenty of land scape around the country. Don't try to change the world. Canada has french speaking areas and they don't make a bid deal out of it, they a probably proud of it.

This is America. If they come here for ALL THE BENEFITS, they should find some humility and learn the American language, ENGLISH.

CONGRATULATIONS! Thank you for your respect and admiration to AMERICA. When my grandparents came from Italy, they too learned how to speak and read English. You are a wonderful role model for your Cuban and other Spanish-speaking-only friends.
