I'm thinking that it's past time for Americans to stand up for their basic freedoms...especially when it comes to something so personal as their bodies.

A public school which cannot delegate your religion also should have no right to delegate your physical appearance. Would a Muslim child have been forced to remove her head covering? Or a Pentacost told to get her hair cut to above her shoulders? Why is the school system allowed to pick and choose against whom it will show prejudice?

Here in Central Florida uniform dress codes are inforced in a lot of the schools. Navy or Khaky pants paired with red, green, or white shirts as to not promote "gang affiliation".

I do agree that the hair issue should be left alone accross the board from Muslim to Pentecostal, as long as it is clean and kept and not of an un-natural color as to distract; it's no ones business.

Back when I was a kid Mowhawks were the thing to wear. These kids today wear Fauxhawks... we actually shaved the sides of our heads and left the strip down the middle. That was NEET O!!

I agree with dress codes in school.
Our public schools are spending so much time teaching Diversity that they are forgetting to teach what our kids are sent to school to learn.
Our public schools are a mess
Some areas are far worse than others but most are failing.
Less distractions in schools would be a good thing.
We spend far more money on our schools than most advanced countries with dismal results.
Something needs to change.

I am the Mother of Brian the child who was suspended! It was not a mohawk , the school agreed it was a MILITARY CUT! Brian dresses in full marine dress almost everyday , He has done so for many years with dreams of becoming a HERO someday!!! i am PROUD of my baby boy and his future is clear to everyone that he meets.
Herrin Middle School does not support our military and they made it clear to us and tryed very hard to down my sons dreams. He has not let them change him and his ways !!!! Children have futures and it is not Mr. Collins/Mr. Robinsons job to tell them who they can or can not become. In my eyes.....BJ is already an AMERICAN HERO!!!! Thankxxx to all of you who do support him , and to the Marine who brought him the wonderful marine gifts.... Thank you so much , He was so happy to have gotten all those wonderful things! We can Not thank you enough for the SMILE you brought back to our baby boy!!!

Well,it's nice to know that the school system has all the day to day problems worked out so they can focus on the really important things like telling us how to wear our hair. It relieves the parents from having the responsibilities of having to raise their kids.

I have not prior knowledge of this situation, but I would be willing to bet that there is more to the story than missrusty has said. No way a school sends a student home for having a military haircut only.

It has not gotten to the point to where I have to make him go to class. He is fighting me and hates to go to school. We are going to move him out of this district asap. The school has a lot of anger towards my son now and even tho all these kids and parents and even veterans support my son 100% they just will not let up on him at all. He was suspended for fighting over a month ago and now they are doing what we like to call DOUBLE JEOPARDY and punishing him all over again by taking his gym away . The thing is he has had gym all the way up until the news aired lol! My lawyer is very upset . I have a feeling this is gonna be a long one . We are not suing for money at all just the RIGHT to be who you are and for the school to allow the "high and tight" but if they continue to punish my child for a newscast that I encouraged him to do for our military than I will resort to other issues with my lawyer who already agrees that its the right choice.Maybe they do NOT want us to have freedom of "SPEECH" either !

Hey Miss.Rusty. It wasn't Mr.Robinson or Dr.Collins who said suspend your son. It was the asst. Principal Brad Heuring. I went to that school and he taught P.E and wasn't a principal.. Plus the superentendant has nothing to do with suspentions anyhow. only if the suspention was wrong cause then you can take it to the board.

MissRusty ~ you and your son have our full support! Our son attends HMS & this shocked us. We see kids there that dress and wear their hair in offensive manners, nothing is done about that. What about the kids who can only see out of one eye b/c their hair is hanging down infront of the other ~ what a goofy look! This is a ridiculous decision by the school. I am wondering, was your story reported by our LOCAL news station or the Southern Illinoisan? I don't personally care for WSIL, but I just wondered if they cared enough to report the situation.

missrusty,

I support your son's decision to fight for his right to wear his hair in the military high and tight. I did see the story on channel 12, and you know what I think?
I think that the school KNOWS they are wrong in the decision that they have made over your sons choice, when they admitted in the beginning that it is INDEED a military cut and then to turn around and try to make it into a mohawk..they now look like fools and just do not want to admit to being wrong.
My son is a senior who had joined the Illinois Army National Guard last summer, he prefers the high and tight and has for some time. Several of his friends sport the same exact cut, thank goodness that our school is not so full of ignorance that we have to face the same issues.
You would think that someone at your son's school would be man enough to admit that he was wrong and Ameican enough to admire a young man who loves our country so much.
To you Brian, you are a young American Hero. Keep fighting for what you know is right..we are behind you 100%!
From an Army Mom I have to give HOOAH! But to you young Marine.. OORAH!

Unfortunately, we have only heard one side of the story. What people need to realize is that school districts do not defend themselves against sometimes false accusations BECAUSE it would be violating confidentiality for the student. Personally, I would not excuse his behavior unless I knew the whole story.

I'd like to see a picture of the actual haircut that caused the suspension. Before we can take a side on this issue we need to know ALL of the facts. I did see the bit on KFVS news about it but by then it looked as though the hair had all been shaved off.

Do you happen to have a picture of the actual cut while your son was wearing it that we could all see?

Unbelievable...running this without getting both sides?? It is outrageous what news agencies have resorted to these days. I guarantee you this child's hair did not look like this (as portrayed by channel 12) when the boy was suspended. Give me a break people, grow up and realize you are only getting half the story. I would be ashamed if I ran this story without doing some fact-checking as it is obvious this reporter did NONE!!

As A Member Of The US Army, I Find This Article Rediculous.

The Fact That They Would Cause Such A Problem Over Your Sons Haircut Just Goes To Show How Much Some People Don't Really Appreciate Soldiers.
