Torrance traffic signals getting smart

Full story: Daily Breeze

A $2.5 million Intelligent Transportation System that uses wireless computerized traffic signals that "talk" to each other to improve traffic flow should be operational in Torrance by late summer.

yes it will be hoped that the traffic signals will be using english as the language. this will be less confusing to everyone because it will be more confusing if intersections use different languages. but if intersections did use different languages then only the people who speak those languages would use them. that would be ok except you may have to drive around 15 miles to get to the store 2 miles away to use the language of your choice. how would tom-tom work with this?
Thanks

Thank you Mayor Scotto and City Council. We need relief from this traffic problem, and the price tag is great! Nothing better than seeing our city spend only $200,000 while millions of dollars are matched from other sources.

Keep up the good work.

What about Hawthorne Blvd, it is one of the busiest streets in the city.

nice, but since the cities around us don't have this type of system, we'll still be camped out in traffic. by the time the other cities get a system, torrance will have to beg the voters for a bond to upgrade the one we have.

Until the system is installed on 190th street in "late summer", how about some temporary fixes? Since 190th was repaved, the signal at 190th and Inglewood has had problems. Even when there is no left turn traffic, the left turn light comes on everytime and remains on for a considerable period. People trying to go straight on 190th have to wait several minutes for the light to cycle. This wastes gas and contributes to the traffic conjestion.

How do we make the drivers smarter and more courteous? I live in Torrance and am amazed at all the red light runners out there, the corner I live on has accidents all the time because of it.

It's a good start, but I agree with Bob. What about Hawthorne Blvd.? It needs it most of all. Those lights seem to be anti-syncronized at certain times and certain intersections.

Wow, waited for this for a long time. The joke in my family is that "How do you know when you are in Torrance"? You know because you are sitting at a RED light, always. Usually no cars are going the other way too. How about that stupid light on Sepulveda by Target to turn south into the neighborhood? A real dumb a.. came up with that one. Plaza Del Amo at Crenshaw, makes sense that 100 cars sit, while one car turns left huh? At least 100 other places like those. If I had time I was going to make a You Tube video showing how many times in a month I sat at Torrance RED lights for no reason. About time Torrance! Frank, If you ever need an example of how lights should work productively, head east on PCH from Crenshaw to the 110 fwy through Lomita and H.C. You will hit almost every light green no matter the time of day or how much traffic. And the folks heading N/S get their chance also in a reasonable amount of time.

Hawthorne is a state highway and can not be included in the network until the city wins control of it, which they are trying to do.

I wonder what the traffic monitors/controllers will do when they get bored?
Do you think that a 10 or 15 minute red light would relieve some of that boredom?
How about letting the light go green long enough to just let one row of cars through at a time, just like freeway onramps.
That could entertain for hours.
What would we call this new video game?
Rampage? ;-)

I will believe this when I see it!! I travel Eshelman, Cabrillo, and Van Ness everyday and I do FUME as I sit at screwed up lights. The Torrance/Cabrillo light is absolutely ridiculous and always gives Torrance Blvd. exceptionally long green lights.

Seems to me, some good is being done and all everyone is doing is complaining. Truly no way to make anyone happy these days. Why not say thanks, thanks for the improvements and maybe add that you hope more is to come. At least that would seem respectful enough.
