The furloughs, layoffs and cancellation of city services & events is because Montgomery & Tell both gave away our cash to the school district without voter approval. Yes,$1,300,000 with no strings attached and nothing in return!!!

The budget actually calls for pulling $1,508,675 from reserves to pay for current general fund expenditures. That's hardly a "balanced budget," it is a current deficit budget that is balanced internally. Nick Tell had identified how the budget could have been balanced for real, but side-stepped real cost-cutting at the last moment.

There are no "furloughs or layoffs" contemplated in this budget (reductions due to attrition, yes, but no furloughs or layoffs).

Also, the MBUSD assistance was paid out of prior year surpluses (aka the use of the $1.5M "reserves"), so the "cancellation of city services and events" and the MBUSD assistance are technically unrelated. Absent the MBUSD funding, the current year's "deficit" use of reserves would only be $200K [I know this sounds confusing, but staff doesn't go out of their way to make this understandable.]

Yes, the city could have used these same reserves to avoid the service and event cutbacks, but the city still has plenty of reserves left if they wanted to fund these this year, even after the use of the $1.5M, But in my opinion many of these cancelled or cut items are hardly worth use of current operating funds, much less using reserves to fund them.

He tapped the reserves and a prior year surplus to "balance" the budget. Get your facts right! What's he and Montgomery going to do next year???

While replacing Tell and Montgomery on the Finance Subcommittee might be long overdue, I can't see giving credit or grief to any single councilmember (although Tell should take some grief for not working up to his potential).

There are five councilmembers that voted on this, and it wasn't (nor should it be) just an up-or-down vote on what the subcommittee recommended.

Nick Tell and Richard Montgomery didn't attend the public budget workshop in 2013. That was very disrespectful to the community. So glad they're off of the City Council now.
