What will it take to open up Herkimer Co.?

The Herkimer County Legislature has finally outdone itself in efforts to squelch public input.

Bad enough that legislators won’t allow any comment at special sessions; bad enough that they frustrate access to web site domains in an attempt to roadblock the Concerned Citizens group; bad enough that they “lose” properly addressed letters; bad enough that they won’t answer written questions.

Worse is that they refuse to recognize Legislator Helen Rose when she correctly follows the rules and raises her hand for permission to speak. Now, to top it off, they’re attempting to completely handicap any dissenting opinions by proposing these rule changes to silence the public and disable Rose from doing her job.

What are these people afraid of? Why are they so obstinate in their refusal to engage openly with their constituents or their colleague? If they were so strong in their convictions on some of the many controversial county issues, if they were so certain of the factual, reasonable components of their decisions, you’d expect — and deserve — that they would gladly and proudly explain them to us. But they don’t and they won’t.

As you can see by their latest anti-democratic activity, they’ll do anything to undermine legal dissent, justified criticism or any statement that’s contrary to their own ill conceived positions on so many issues. They just don’t want to hear it! They run Herkimer County as their own little fiefdom and will continue to do so as long we all are willing to let them. Are you willing?

fix, repair ,add to the existing jail.
no costly expense carting prisoners from jail to court just walk them over.no need for new sewers or electric costly new lines they are allready in place. The land on 28 stays on the tax roll.the villag has offered the property adjoing the jail now parking are for jail addition.It shouldn't be difficult to see the lesser cost and advantage of keeping the court room and the jail close to each other. A plaque with the legislatures names will look just as good on a jail in the present location as on a multi million fiasco on route 28. the reason for the new new building on rte. 28 according to B.Peplinski is the existing thirty year old jail is beyond repair or two expensive to repair and it is too small and no recreation facilities. I sugest the legislatures look into repair and new addition to the existing facility.

Put it to a countywide vote. New jail or fix/expand existing jail. It is easy to simply say it's too expensive to fix. Show us how expensive it is to fix - itemized so we can see if the numbers are true. Then we will believe it.
