"We weren’t going to spend that money on restaurants and hotels if we weren’t sure we were going to host it,” Mr. Stephens said.
Define"We"; firemen, taxpayers, volunteers, individuals?

Why does Ilion have to be so difficult? They should have said it was ok to have it in June. Why double book events in July?

John Stephens and Ilion's inept leadership deprived the struggling valley of a $3 million economic boost

that's about how much 10,000 firemen and families would have spent over three days June 6 - 8

and that's just for ONE YEAR.

3 years =$9 million

assuming the convention went well, it could be expected the convention would return each year

not to mention what for many would have been a fun and exciting event and a point of community pride

this is the biggest F-up of Stephens' dismal career in public service

What's appalling is that this Mayor belived that he could unilaterally or without majority support of members change the By-laws of the Association. Mr.Stephens has shown that he has very little leadership abilities and influence to bring about positive results for the village. Previous efforts of consolidation or shared services have fallen well short of the campaign rhetoric.
Talks with other municipalities have been just that, talk. New sources of revenues especially from an increased tax base are sorely lacking, and a long overdue final water service agreement with the Town of German Flats remains elusive.
Hope equal or more effort and diligence will be given to these issues as was done in attemting to host this convention.

10,000 attendees for three days June 6-8

say each attendee spends on average $100 a day

10,000 x $100 =$1 million a day

$1 million x 3 days =$3 million injected into the local economy
yeah right

Doubtful it would be that high nor that many people would or could actually come to little Ilion, NY. Nice way to inflate the numbers to push your agenda against this mayor.

Tell us, where in Ilion would you hold an event with 10,000 people?

you're also not factoring in the expenses that would be associated with holding such an event. Your $1M per day fantasy is dwindling down very fast!

I am merely quoting the 10,000 attendee figure as cited by the firemens convention leadership in the news article. I assume you have an exact count of the attendees that would have arrived?

Where would you hold such an event in Ilion? Why don't you ask the convention leadership?

As the article states, they were locked and loaded on Ilion until Stephens in a his bone-headed way insisted the association move its event from June 6-8 (same time of year since 1959) to the middle of July to coincide with Ilion Days and the Doo Dah Parade.

Instead of picking on details, why don't you explain to everyone how Stephens' insistence that the convention leadership change its dates so the event would coincide with the already busy Ilion Days makes...

We look forward to your explanation.

Doesn't matter why Stephens was doing what he was doing. Your numbers are highly suspect. And since you cannot provide a source of reference for them, then it become clear they are not for real but pulled out of your ass. Cite a source.

It is highly likely the Convention was never seriously entertaining the idea of bringing this to Ilion because logistically, it would be impossible to hold this in Ilion. Lets try the Herkimer County Fairgrounds in Frankfort as the most logical location for it.

And how would you know anything without providing data and a source? You must be the Topix troll that judged the post with negative symbols.
The walrus idiot wouldn't know how to generate revenue for this doomed village if it was handed to him. Apprently the event was staring him in the face and he chose to ignore it.
Maybe he didn't want 'real' firemen from outside the village calling him out as an imposter poser ex fireman who is on pussy disability.

I'm not the one making the claims with numbers and such as you are. I refute your claims because you did not reference anything with a link or even a titled document. Therefore, if anyone is to provide a source and data, it is you. Back up your claims, else they are BS.

Interestingly, you posted this in the Herkimer forum, not Ilion.

OK then, I will continue to educate you.

This thread was generated when someone decided to comment on a story in the Topix "News" section. You can tell this is a news story-generated thread by the little newspaper icon to the left of the title of thread in the list of threads.

When you open a news story-generated thread such as this one, you will see the headline used by the news outlet and: "Full story:..." with URL to the source story. In this case, that URL is

http://www.mpcourier.com/article/20130316/DCO...

Finally, the individual who started this thread had no control over where it would be posted, be it Ilion Herkimer etc. That is determined by the automated system that Topix has set up.

In this case, the Topix system deigned that the thread appear in both Herkimer and Ilion forums.

That is good, as more people in the valley can be informed on how Ilion's thumb-sucking Mayor Stephens and other tweedle-dees and tweedle-dums in Ilion deprived the valley of what could have been a $3 million economic windfall.

Something is not adding up on both sides in that story. Why Ilion and where in Ilion could handle a large gathering like that?

to rebut the poster earlier with their multimillion dollar fantasy, straight from the article:

"The influx of up to 10,000 firemen for the weekend could have pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy."

Up to 10,000 for the weekend, not each day. It never would have amounted to anywhere approaching $3 million dollars.

10000 people coming to a village of 8888 people? John your dreaming and have NO idea. First other than the Red Carpet Inn, Herkimer Motel, Inn Town Motel and Knights Inn in Little Falls where would the stay? Utica? Then why have the conference in Ilion. You also need a meeting place to hold the meetings for that many people. The next thing is directed at the Village Board, who authorized the Village of Ilion to spend a dime on booking rooms for a private organization. Time for a BIG Change in Ilion.

Exactly. They would have had to reserve rooms out to Utica for that kind of crowd. Doesn't add up. Besides, why would the village be responsible for reserving rooms? Shouldn't the people coming to the vent reserve their own rooms?

Mr.Stephens and the Village Board should concentrate their economic development efforts on true and tested policies of lower taxs, less regulations and efficient government.

in my view and experience, the majority (say 75%) of attendees would have lodged for two nights. Maybe 20% would have lodged one night. Very few would have driven in and out the same day, given the distances involved for many and the opportunity to party up with their buddies.

as for the article understating the economic impact as "hundreds of thousands of dollars," well, the reporter clearly didn't do the math, and likely lacked the perspective of an economic development professional.

when one does the math, it's obvious that we're looking at a multi-million dollar impact that Stephens has single-handedly squandered.
