You people should know what you are talking about before you make assumptions. Yes the college has announced that they will not be hosting the Independence Day celebration. What you don't know is that that event is funded by the money that the STUDENTS pay in Alumni dues each semester and guess what, they are not around in July to see their money blown up in the sky! The other portion of the funding comes from community businesses like the Polish Club, who has decided that they can not give this year for whatever reason. Kudos to the College for making a decision that will benefit the students because after all it is the students money. The ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, they are in charge of the money the students pay in dues, should decided on a big event in the fall or the early spring when the students can enjoy the money they pay in each semester. You people think you know everything!!!! Am I going to miss the fireworks? YES!! But I can take my daughter to the fireworks some place else, it's not like HCCC held the only firework show! Get over it and stop being selfish!

Big Deal, you do not know what you are talking about. The Alumni Association IS NOT in charge of the money the students pay in dues. The FACULTY STUDENT ASSOCIATION (FSA) is in charge of student dues, and it is a completely different group with its own bylaws and Board of Trustees. Maybe the Alumni Association is involved with the event, as is the FSA, but the Alumni Association does not collect fees from students. Only the FSA does that. Students who graduate pay alumni dues.

That would be more to the reality of it. Alumni dues are for those who have graduated that belong to the alumni club.

Get rid of Brian Marharver...
He is Bookstore manager as well as head of of 2 other depts so he gets a percentage of the cafeteria and who know how much in kick backs, his salary for one year alone will cover the fireworks for 5 years !!
Maybe if you call and ask him the questions, you would get the facts and the truth. They are audited by a outside agency each year and a kickback would be grounds for charges. Not True!!!
FSA and Alumni Assoc both get funds from students. FSA writes checks for firewoks but does not fund them. I worked for FSA and never had any problems with FSA.

Students do not pay alumni fees. Alumni do.

Kickbacks happen all the time. You just never hear about them.

Where? Not in MIHLFF. HCCC fireworks are the only July 4th game in town in MIHLFF.

Er, WERE the only game in town.

THANK YOU!!! There are alumni charges on your tuition bill each semester and guess what, the alumni association has a say in how that money is spent! Students also pay a student activities fee which is handled by FSA and guess what, they have a budget each year and they disburse the money back to the clubs that the students belong to! Why are you so convinced that the staff is pocketing the money? What do you think tuition pays for....operations and salaries dumb ass! The money the students pay in Alumni Dues and Student Activities fees is spent in a way that they can enjoy it i.e. concerts, movie nights, comedy nights, dances, athletics etc...

And Brian Marhaver is a very smart man! He has been at the college for quite some time and has brought a lot of innovative ideas! Whos idea do you think it was to enable the students to spend their financial aid in our community instead of making them wait to get their refund check and then taking it back to the city...oh, I think that would be Brian Marhaver! Because of him these kids are blowing their money at Applebees and Fastrack in the town of Herkimer not NYC!!!

It's bad enough that these kids are getting thousands of dollars in Federal refunds after tuition has been paid for, at least they are spending that money in our communities!!!!

I have no idea what alumni charges are or why in the world current students would be billed for them. That might be something for someone being billed to inquire about. I can say in all certainty that to officially BE an alumni, you have to BE a graduate. That is all I'm saying.

wow really, a three year old article to prove your "point" most business ventures lose money in their first couple years when they have all the start-up costs to tend with. why don't you get with the times and stop living in the past
