Agreed. I like Arbys, but they are overpriced and I dont see how they do enough business to stay afloat. Wendys makes a great burger.

what? did you read the article in your link? it said that that wendy's sold just over 80% of their stake in arby's. it said nothing about merging the two companies. they are actually separating. while i too would love to have wendy's in herkimer rather than an arby's, the two companies are moving away from that, not towards it.

I'd go to Arby's so much more if I didn't have to give my first unborn child to them whenever I got myself a meal!!!! lol

i never go to Arbys. ick. everytime we go past it looks empty. i don't know anyone who cares for that place and how they manage to stay in business.

Wendys on the other hand i would visit three times a week.

not just for burgers but the baked potatoes, salads and Chili is excellent. you can get a salad and chili for lunch and it is pretty darn good, all things considered.

At least Arby's has good sandwiches. The last thing we need around here is another crappy hamburger joint. Wendy's is no better than BK or Mickey D's, which isn't saying much, since they stink.

theres a better chance that arby's will become a second hand shop, and burger king will become a tattoo shop, and mcdonalds will become a head shop, and taco bell will become a rent to own store.

ha, that is completely untrue.

compare the Main Streets of Herkimer and Little Falls.

Little Falls is far nicer, with more businesses and fewer welfare scumbags. it actually has a little bit of charm.

Main Street Herkimer is an utter and unmitigated disaster -- a charmless hellhole.

On Main Street Herkimer, the number of vacant storefronts outnumbers businesses by like 7 to 1. every nice day is like a Hatfield and McCoy family reunion with all the creatures idling about in their droopy drawers with shopping carts and muffin-tops, scaring off would-be businesses and customers.

Main Street Herkimer is the butt-ugliest, least desirable Main Street in a county seat in all of NYS.

My organization, www.herkimernow.org , has been working to spruce up Main Street but even our most optimistic members realize it's a losing battle.

For every 2000 cigarette butts that we sweep up, another 3000 will be thrown onto the sidewalk.

we know we cannot appreciably improve Herkimer's Main St.- we can only apply Band-Aids to its festering wounds and attempt to slow its continued and inevitable decline.

Herkimer Main Street has so much potential for revitalization, and so many barriers to overcome. You need businesses on Main Street. Problem is, businesses want to go where the traffic is. I suggest that HCCC move its bookstore and some student-frequented offices down to Main Street. Colgate did that in Hamilton, and it worked quite well to improve the viability of the downtown.

Give the Quackenbush property to HCCC to build a learning center with a bookstore in it.

You make some excellent suggestions. One need only look at other towns with colleges – Hamilton, Cortland, Oneonta, to name just a few – to see how municipal governments and institutions of higher education can work together to create a vibrant and dynamic downtown community.

Unfortunately, there is little reason to expect that college and local government leaders will work together, even for their mutual benefit.

A prime example is HCCC’s cancellation of its annual Fourth of July fireworks show. After many years of providing summertime entertainment to the Mohawk Valley this show will not be put on this July.

The real reason for canceling the Fourth of July show was petty politics, grudge matches and personal vendettas involving college, village and county officials, which started with negative attention over the improper use of county employees to tend to the personal home and property of the president of HCCC, Dr. Anne Marie Murray, about 1 1/2 year ago.

The grievances and divisions have only worsened since then, with the Fourth of July Celebration cancellation just the most public manifestation of the feud between the college and local governments.

Keep dreaming about HCCC contributing to the revitalization of downtown Herkimer!
