Six fire departments to take part in consolidation study

The fire agencies involved in the study are the volunteer Frankfort Fire Department, the Ilion Fire Department, the volunteer Mohawk Fire Department, the Herkimer Fire Department, the volunteer East Herkimer Fire Department and the Little Falls City Fire Department.
In the news release, Vandawalker said the fire chiefs at the named agencies have identified several areas that merging service may be beneficial to the operations of their departments while helping to reduce the burden on taxpayers

Well, Joe Brown hasn't been a fireman in quite a while now, but it is about time they did something with all of these stations all so close together. Maybe they should have included the police in the study.

This type of study is needed and welcomed.Weather a full merger or shared services, will heavily depend upon need and agreement of manner of operations. There will need to be compromise by all involved, communities with paid fire departments will have to accept and utilize more voluteer services and volunteer communities will have to accept at least minimum paid services.
Step number one to combining of police and ALL governmental services, in foot step with merged education. Lets keep moving forward!

Why when it comes to doing the right cost effective measure, is it almost always the last resort? Case and point, scool merger; now talk of fire service merger.
Answer: Parochialism,control, self intrest, unions.
The many layers of government(County, State, Town, Village), have and are costing taxpayers millions in waste duplications and efficiency. Business sees these many layers, all the red tape, various boards,and committees to negotiate with and pacify, that it is in their interest to do business elswhere.
Government services such as fire, police, Ambulance, water,streets, sewers,education, purchasing, etc need to be centralized in the County government.The south and west have done very well using this model and philosophy, keeping property taxes relatively low and public services at a high level of efficiency .
