Harold the trustee thinks ok that Main Street is the way it is. He thinks that the sidewalk is a front stoop for what dwells above the storefronts. Yes where is the police patrol. At any given time village hall parking lot is always filled with police cars. No one is patrolling Main Street. Where is codes enforcement? Oh they must be whining how they are over worked. Wake up people it's time to vote all the people and replace the appointed ones. Mr Kuehnle and Cancellino you have both failed the taxpayers. The village is disgrace and it rests on your shoulders. Resign both of you and let the village hire a certified codes enforcer. Main Street is disaster and it is sad, as a kid that was the place to go but no more.

Can't wait until my house sells South Carolina here I come....

They are too busy hassling the folks who might have a few bucks. No point in hassling the low lifes. They have nothing to lose by telling them to F'off. Some of these nice folks should go trick or treating up Steffalano's way this fall.

It gets worse. The village now has a bed bug issue that is spreading. The codes enforcer and public health officer are doing NOTHING. No one is forcing landlords to clean up their dumps! Someone complains they get evicted, then the very next day new tenants are moving in. The new tenants have no clue that soon their belongings will be infested too! I can only imagine the infestation on Main Street. I have heard that a 5 apartment dwelling on West Lake Ave owned by a school teacher named Giglio is infested and she is doing NOTHING but having her husband threaten tenants! Come on, if this is left untreated even the cleanest homes in the village will be infested. Thankfully I own my own home but I feel real sorry for tenants with children that have no control!

A few years ago I complained to Kuehnle that the landlords of The Alvaro building {by Beacon Center} were renting apartments with no smoke or carbon monoxide detectors. He was very rude to me on the phone, stating that it was my son's responsibility to ask for the detectors. He then stated,"what do you expect me to do, inspect the whole building?" I bought my son a good detector that picks up on both smoke and CO 2. Thank God he finally moved out after a few years. But it wasn't just about my son's apartment, there are several in that building. It is owned by an attorney and I forgot the name of the other co-owner. I JUST LOVE how my TAXES are paying this rude SOB'S salary!!!!

Downtown Herkimer problems did not start yesterday and they are not going away overnight either. There has never been long term, competent plans to keep legal business on the street. That goes for everyone you have ever elected. The seed for today was planted a long time ago, you just didn't see it. You can complain all you want about police, codes enforcement, et al, but until you get commercial businesses willing to start up in no vehicle traffic, no parking, drug infested areas, you are not going to have anything but a Main Street housing project. In the ensuing years, traffic patterns moved to Rte. 5.

I don't understand the last sentence in your post. Are you suggesting that the traffic patterns be rerouted? Thanks.

Excuse me, but very little police presence breeds crime, uninhabitable fire traps for apartments attract scum where's the codes enforcer? The seed planted long ago and how many elected officials have been around since the seed was planted? And of course lets dump 30 grand of taxpayer money into a burrito shop in the center of it, yeah good thinking. Main Street is the villages problem they allowed this to happen and everybody is paying for it. If anyone followed the legal codes or enforced it this would not be a problem.

Why not block off North Main Street to traffic and make it a pedestrian mall. They could put picnic tables and benches there for the residents. That would solve the parking meter problem and the loitering on the sidewalk.

Hey wait, Herkimer's salvation..Marty Luppio..the cop who can't get off his butt, will leave soon and be a county legislator. They we will see him give all the sheriff wants just like he tried to get the village give to the cops. Listen up boys. We have no money in the village. cops and fire better realize that. No increase in contract and Luppino can do nothing in the county like he has done in our village. He will try to to get all he can get for himself and his buddies and screw the taxpayers. He's lazy and an idiot. What makes him think he can do anything other than mess around.

Excuse me, but you can pass all the zoning laws you want and even bring in the national guard, but at the end of the day, you still have what is there and nothing changes. While police and codes enforcement do honorable jobs, they are not in the community development business.

This past month, I have walked through rehabbed, formerly abandoned industrial and residential areas in Hartford, CT, Kansas City, MO, and Evanston, IL. It was great to park and roam the streets with sidewalk vendors, stores, restaurants, movie theaters, etc. remembering what an eyesore these areas once were. My hats off to whoever made those transformations possible ! With a little change in thought process, there is no reason some degree of those transformations could not occur in Herkimer.

I am not a fan of the Burrito Jonz situation, but am not going to complain for the effort. We are not going to be successful trying to attract business to the area in one off situations. The entire area from Myers Park (rarely used) to Folt Home needs to be a public market. Even if a Burrito Jonz opens, where are people going to park safely, where are they going to sit outside, and what else are they going to be able to do while they are there ? The only options currently available are get a tattoo, hire a hooker, or buy drugs. I can understand a single business balking.

Definitely a good idea. I hope they don't just hire a consultant for 100 grand if the idea is ever presented. Something has to give and give soon.

I also had a problem with Kuehnle awhile ago. I reported another building to him up by Mary street that didn't have smoke detectors and he gave me the same line. How can he look at himself in the mirror every morning knowing that a fire hazard like no detectors has been reported to him, and he refuses to do anything about it. I was told that he has a full time job on the Herkimer fire dept. Does anyone know if he still is a fireman there? He's useless and a danger to the community if he can't inspect a building or even call a landlord about a codes violation that could cost lives!!!!

The landlord was probably a friend of his. Things have to change in Herkimer. I wish people would either do their jobs or get replaced by someone willing to do their job. Things need to change around here.

I hope not too ! You do not need a consultant to copy the best ideas from other areas that have already done it. You do need to look beyond Exit 29-31 on the Thruway though. We also need to put a lid on the incessant whining and criticism of those you elected. Certainly there is room for improvement, but after all, you elected them and I see a real shortage of better ideas.

Exactly!! What ever happened to good old fashioned brain storming, and obtaining info on what has worked in other areas of the state. As far as some of the tenants in the Main street apartments, I read an article that the Herkimer Housing Authority plans on building another complex. If they are not sex offenders or violent felons, some could qualify. In NYC these people would be hardly noticeable, but here the seedy ones stick out like sore thumbs. They are not all on welfare, some are the working poor, with no other place to go. Then there are THE OTHERS!! LOL
