Have you seen the pile of filthy dirty smelly stained mattresses leaning against a tree on Main St across from Collis Hardware? they have been there a week and the pile is getting bigger , today they added a couch , I guess this is the new administrations Revitalizing of Main St., my in-laws from Vermont are in town for the week they can't believe that crap has sat there that long and town officials have done nothing , does Herkimer DPW own a truck to pick this crap up?

Piss stained -- and you know this how? You went up and sniffed them?

Well I did sniff the mattresses and they do not smell like pee, in fact they smell quite fragrant. I enjoyed it.

And duh, the mattress placement on Main St. is a deliberate marketing technique to encourage people to consider Main St. as a "place to call home" -- timed to coincide with college students looking around for places to live before the fall semester begins.

When people see mattresses on the sidewalk they think, "Hey other people live here -- we should too!" Anybody who doesnt get that is a big dummy.

Typical responses to a potentialy serious issue... this is why Herkimer and this area in general) are in the shape they're in... should maybe call for costly medical waste disposal and have the taxpayers foot the bill...

Now that they have been saturated with rain water for the past 2 days the waste disposal fees will be even higher due to the weight of the wet mattresses.

just like the heaps of brush and weed piles at Quackenbush have been there months and nobody picks it up. Funny how the tax bills always show up on time. Mattresses and weed piles welcome to Herkimer! nice job dpw and politicians really hitting it out of the park!

Landlords on Main St. need a good smack in the head. The whole street needs to be cleaned up and policed. You can't even go to the library without being gawked at and pestered by the denizens of Main St. It's amazing that Weisser's and Collis Hardware stay in business. Clean it up or tear it down.

Why should DPW pick them up? I have to pay to throw my garbage away. If I come drop it on Main St. then I can get rid of it for free and the village will take care of it for me? Property owners are responsible for it not the village taxpayers.

DPW should pick them up ASAP because it's in the public interest. Having taxpayers pony up a bit of cash for disposal is infinitely preferable to the alternative of leaving these piss-stained eyesores out to rot in the rain and further add to the tragic embarassment that is Main Street.

Enforcement is extremely difficult and time-consuming. It's not practical nor cost-effective to assign an investigator or two to invest an untold number of manhours to attempt to determine the point of origin of the offending mattresses. What does the investigator do, interview a few dozen Main Street residents and property owners to try to pinpoint the criminal who dragged them to the street?

Or better yet, maybe the village can have forensics professionals scrape DNA from the pus, drool and semen stains on the mattresses and take DNA samples from every welfarian on the street -- now that would get to the bottom of the matter, at the reasonable cost of only a couple of hundred thousand dollars.

Has anyone noticed that Walmart has removed all the trash cans they used to have in the parking lot?

This must be because people were abusing them to dispose of household and other garbage.

I noticed the trash cans were missing last week when I went over to Walmart to dump off a few bagfuls of junk.

The village stopped DPW picking up garbage years ago. The residents wnated to pay more to have it picked up by privates. Now we want the village to pick up trash anyway. But nobody wants to pay taxes. Everbody realizes the village has to pay to have that disposed of as well? It just doesn't magically disappear just because the workers pick it up.

"Not again" what do you suggest be done with this eye sore just leave it there? If it were across the street from your House or Mobile Home who do you think should remove it?

Yeah. They have a baby whose death still hasn't been solved:

HERKIMER

Village police are still investigating why a 13-month-old baby boy from Herkimer died unexpectedly last week, prosecutors said.

William Michael Allen was pronounced dead at the Albany Medical Center last Friday, and it is not yet known whether an autopsy has determined the baby’s cause of death, said Herkimer County Assistant District Attorney Jeff Carpenter.

William is the son of James Allen and Tiffany Green, who live in Herkimer.

Carpenter would not elaborate on any circumstances surrounding the death pending further investigation by Herkimer village police.

“Obviously we have an infant who passed away unexpectedly, and that circumstance alone warrants an investigation to make sure no foul play or criminal activity took place,” Carpenter said Wednesday.“I really can’t comment any further at this time, because it’s really too premature.”

That kid ended up getting swept under the proverbial carpet. Now if they can't get to the bottom of a dead kid how in the hell do you expect them to figure out who dumped a mattress on Main Street?
