Would a couple hundred dollars more in taxes really break you? C'mon now. Invest in the future of our children....skip a trip to WalMart every once in a while. Seriously.

How about...
Now the unions will be hopefully agree to the teacher evaluations which will allow us to get much more aid. And mix that in with looking into why the school's 'contractual obligations' keep going up every year when us common folks have to endure wage or benefits decreases in one form or another. Prove that you truly wanted the merger for the benefit of the kids. Agree to teacher evaluations so we can get that aid, and then take a one-time small wage and benefits cut. If you won't do this, then are you really about the benefit of the kids? You lost because enough people saw through your scheme. Redeem yourselves and do what's right. DO NOT retaliate by taking away anything more from the kids without first agreeing to these concessions. The merger was pushed so 'contractual obligations' could continue to go up because of the incentive aid, and nobody would have to make any concessions. Sorry we ruined your sweat deal. It wasn't about the kids at all. Thank God some people woke up and stopped the merger from going forward.

to thoughtful discourse, i am retired and live on a fixed income. and so do a great many of the people in this area. a couple hundred more a year would be hard for me. i pay plenty now. also as the head of boces said your taxes will go up and programs will be cut. that will really help you kids. Mohawk and Ilion are getting with the state board of education to get this merge done with just them. and when the state comes in and tells you will merge with someone, i hope it is little falls or frankfort. just what you deserve.

Can't be Little Falls. City schools can't merge.

Sorry about you in Mohawk. But maybe you should ask for the teacher evaluations and concessions from the teachers and administration there too. Sports are a scapegoat because everyone knows if you taunt that the opposition doesn't want to lose the sports you make that same opposition look stupid. But it's not about sports. It's about making people do what's right and not allowing them to rip off the entire community. The kids will not suffer if the community demands the unions to do what needs to be done.

City School District certainly can merge with other districts, however it occurs as more of a takeover. A merger with Little Falls and Herkimer under law would result in a district called the Greater Little Falls School District.

Three people in Ilion are paid a combined $320,000 per year with an average of $20,000 per year in benefits for 180 days. Until you have some financial sanity schools will continue to fail financially.

The schools in question are broken....they don't teach, they mis-spent money..So why do we think that putting 3 broken schools together would fix the problem? The powers to be should learn from West Canada School....kids are learning & the school is financially stable.
The proposed 3 merger schools employees are now extremely upset about the "no" vote. They won't get their 12% increase in salary, they have to stop the construction of the home improvements in anticipation of their salary boost...It was never about the kids. If the teachers started paying 2% toward their benefit package (we non-union workers pay 80% toward our benefits) The school could financilly be cured. Then if we added evaluations & got rid of the non-teaching teachers, the kids would greatly benefit. A merger would not have fixed anything...it would have spread the disease.

I wish this guy would explain himself. Doesnt he realize that schools is a big expense to the tax payers. By having the merger students gain more and state aid would increase to 60 Million $. You should know all about budgets you sat on many.

Monohan was also one of three petitioners who asked the state Education Department last week to put a stay on the vote, citing among other things taxpayer money was improperly used by school officials to “scare” people into voting in favor of the merger.

Why do we continue to throw money down the educational rabbit hole? Why is it our kids get their butts kicked in performance to the rest of the first world and a lot of third world countries? Why does socialist Belgium have a libertarian style school system? Maybe it works? Why are Kids that are home schooled and private school kids, ahead of their public school peers?
No matter how much money we throw to at our public school system, our kids STILL FAIL! Time to resist these mergers that will DO NOTHING, but provide high paying jobs for inept college grads, from failed disciplines. There is no other way but to bankrupt them, and start all over. I'm all for paying teachers well but our schools performances are dismal. We hear about alleged blue ribbon schools, but they never compare them to other countries. Little Falls brags about a 75% grad rate. What happens to the other 25%? How does the 75% rate on the global scale?

What has happened to our education system? The "Mission Statement" of any school should state EDUCATING the children of a community as the priority of that school system. Education has become secondary to all school systems. Now it is money, salaries and SPORTS! Now the community must bow to the "wants" of the teacher's unions. The teachers used to have to answer to the taxpayers. There is no compromise and the children are the leverage the school holds over the citizens. Evaluation is absolutely necessary! The teachers all need assistants, and want more money to do less teaching! THE SCHOOL CAN'T HAVE FULL DAY CLASSES FOR KINDERGARTEN. My granddaughter does not attend one of these schools but when she finished kindergarten last year she was already reading. How can children accomplish this on a half day schedule? Also what about parents who work all day. How are they supposed to be home half a day because their child is out of school? This is the formative years! Why not cut out some sports? Also, if your school can't have certain classes such as business, what's wrong with distance learning? It seems the high school is more important than elementary. All three of these schools have brought up the children with the attitude, "Our school is the best." I attended Mohawk High School and I know first hand the frenzy associated with sports. How can you expect to merge 3 rival schools successfully? And I agree with this person who is a senior citizen. When you live on a fixed income, a few hundred dollars it is a hardship.

You can thank Senator seward and butler for this mess. They have never been for the people of Herkimer County; it has always been for the insurance companies and their cronies!

"These are huge, gaping holes so either taxes are going to go up considerably and people are going to agree to that or there's going to be massive cuts," Vivacqua said. "That much is clear."

A private education is looking better and better.
With impending tax increases it is a no brainer, a better rate of return on investment.

The teachers don't "need" assistants, assistants must be provided to meet the needs of students with IEP's... And keep in mind that the countries that you say lead us in academics don't educate everyone, just those that they feel will succeed. The others are sent to trade schools, and what do they do with their Special Ed population? Nothing!! Our Public Schools educate them all. Also, of course the teachers will adopt an evaluation system...it's now state law. The details just have to be negotiated. But don't get your hopes up that this evaluation system will change the world- even if a teacher comes out to be ineffective, it would still be 3 full years before a school district could even begin the process of removing them. It's all smoke and mirrors by Cuomo to make it look like he is "fixing" the efucation system in NYS when he runs for Pres. In 2016. All the evaluation system is is a paper shuffle anyway. Fill a stupid binder with documentation that you've done this or that to accumulate points toward your overall score. Herkimer is in trouble with the budget shortfall. Most likely they'll look to put out a Mandate-only budget, which would devastate the school system. What kinds of things aren't mandated? Music, Art, kindergarten, many electives, sports, school clubs, etc. Herkimer just gave up a great opportunity to offer the very best for this next generation of students!!

sports are 2% of the budget teachers union has a lot of blame here they say its about the kids? you can take a small pay cut or benefit reduction for the kids? what is the median salary around here and how many ppl in the school system are way way above it.....you care about the kids a small monetary sacrifice can preserve there futures.Which is more important the money or the kids?

well the idiots of herkimer you know how to screw up our kids and the good people of herkimer by voteing down the merge. Any to the ones that caused the problems at the school to have to have the police break you up. Then to go to the local bars and get people from there to make sure they voted no. and also to go and get collage kids to vote no. yes , you should be proud of yourselves. I under stand that some people from mohawk and ilion are trying to get the state to let them merge. I hope they have good luck.I will back them 100%. but when the state comes in and tells you you will merge,i hope you get either with little falls or frankfort. that will fix you right.

Lets see, mohawk would of benefited the most from the merger. Yet when the school burnt down ilion was there for them housing mohawk students. We tried to merge then. What did mohawk do? They said fu ilion. Then mohawk didnt have a football field. Richfield let mohawk use theres. When they got the field fixed. And richfield want to play on mohawks team they said fu to them also. Well now the taxes are getting high in mudwalk so they want someone to help them again. This time ilion should say they same thing herkimer did.Fu mohawk
