After reading these post, I checked my statement. I also found crazy fees.

Last year M&T received over $700 from me in overdraft fees on a total of about $100 in charges. The bulk of these were under $3. 11 happened in one day due to a "hold" from a restaurant that didnt register on my account when checked by phone. I was told that I should use online banking to check the status of my account and it would be accurate there- but if its inaccurate by phone (which is connected to their computers) then isnt that misinformation. Why have that service at all- because it allows them to steal.
Fuck M&T and all major banks. I hope you get yours like all the rest. This behavior is criminal. Overdraft fees made sense when people used checkbooks, but now with all the digitized smokescreens and cold customer service it makes it impossible to communicate and correct any problems before they become financially devastating. I have lived in rough areas of Baltimore City for the past 6 years and im beginning to think my money is safer under my mattress or in my wallet.

I completely agree with you. This is how the bank makes (more) money. The problem with keeping it under your mattress is when you have a check you want to cash-try and find a bank that will cash it unless you have an account with them, or they'll charge you x amount of $'s to cash it for you. It's ridiculous. I always check on phone, too, haven't had any problems yet, but I know of people who have-M&T is famous for it.

M&T once hit me with overdraft fees even though there was NEVER a negative balance showing in my account. I check my balance online frequently and it was never negative. However, I guess there was a hold from buying gas that somehow/somewhere (in a corner of their system that I certainly don't see) created an overdraft for which I was charged through the wazoo. No one can show me this negative balance but I can still be charged for it.

Another time I tried to exchange some Canadian currency for US currency in their main branch in my city and they told me to go to American Express instead because M&T's currency exchanges take a week(!) to process and will give me a less favorable exchange rate than American Express. I guess I should be grateful the employee at least directed to a place (American Express) that actually wants my business, where I was able to walk out with my US cash within minutes.

Today was the last straw for me. I tried to deposit a check made payable to both me and my ex-husband, who had endorsed the check over to me. M&T refused to accept the check. I've been a customer for over 20 years and have plenty of cash in my account, and they wouldn't accept a deposit from me. They said he would have to come into the branch with me. I asked what I would do if he lived across the country, but I only received blank stares in return. Fortunately, he will meet me at a branch tomorrow so I can make the deposit, but I am leaving this bank. What jerks!

when i complained about all the crap they put you through when you try to cash a check where you don't have an account, i was told it was to protect me. everyone is trying to protect me more and more, these days. even wal-mart protects me by removing the bad words from my cd's. i don't know about everyone else, but i'm getting sick of being protected by so many people.

What an experience!! There was a time when my husband was working through this staffing agency, and their account was through M&T bank in Syracuse. M&T here in Herkimer would not cash his checks, nor could he deposit the check into our account because according to a teller, this staffing agency never had enough funds in their account to cover the employee's checks,(which in itself was bad enough) However, they told my husband if he wanted to, he could drive to Syracuse, and the branch there would cash it (this is when gas was like $5.00/gallon.) I don't understand it, I thought they were all affiliated!

Trust me, NBT isn't any better than M&T. In fact, I believe NBT just might be worse. And I'll keep it at that.

DOWN WITH NBT!!!!

I had a situation similar last year with M&T. My son received a check (payable to me and his father) to be held in trust for him in an M&T account. M&T wouldn't deposit the check even though his father had endorsed it and it was going into our sons CD account. His father had to drive 1000 miles (after I had the check re-cut because it expired) so that we could be there together (per the bank) to deposit it. They then told us we'd have to be together to withdraw the funds too. Both his father and I told the lady that it wasn't our money but our childs and we had no interest in it and we couldn't cash it or even put it into our own accounts so WHY did we both have to be there? No explanation. M&T Sucks.

On a second rant.... My pay is drawn of M&T bank. I also have an M&T checking account. Normally, Fridays I cash my check and go to lunch. A few fridays ago I was busy so rather than taking the time to go into the branch and cash my check, I deposited the entire thing.

Well, they put a hold on it pending clearance. Bear in mind, it's a check drawn on M&T and there's no reason to delay cashing it out. I paid my bills online Friday after making the deposit as always.

Over a week later I check my mail (I really should check it more often) and there are several overdraft notices in my mail. They had cleared all my bill payments but not my paycheck and bounced all my payments! I have overdraft fees to the tune of $200.00!! When I called M&T this morning and asked why they'd delaying cashing my check out and the representative told me that they have the right to hold any deposit (even CASH) deposits for up to 3 days DESPITE the fact that I could have just walked in and gotten the cash right there. The customer service rep recommended that I wait 3 full days after each deposit before I pay my bills.

Long story short, they will not reverse the charges (claimed they couldn't) and I'm out $200.00 in overdraft fees.

I'm closing my account. M&T sucks.

M&T took over Provident Bank of MD and started to charge service fees on the money market accounts that Provident never charged (and Provident customers never agreed to when they opened their accounts).

M&T, keep the 10 bucks that you just stole from me. You won 10 bucks, you lost a customer.

Although I've had a couple of issues with them, I hear most of them are going with the same 'standard procedures' so I don't see any point in transferring to another bank

M and T bank are the rudest and most unfair bank. A charge hit my account in the amout of 59.95, one day my statement read 2 small charges both under 10.00 had cleared then the next day WOW the 59.95 is shown to be first causing me 3 overdraft fees of 37.50 each. Then I have my direct deposite and amazingly I got gas and spent 6.00 bucks at a wawa. I went to the bank and withdrew most of the money the teller said she could see the charges that were made just hours before and I made sure I had enough in the account to cover them, then to my surprise my statement was in the negative the whole time and the neww charges are now assessed 37.50 x4 more. I called customer service and asked if the teller saw the pending charges why did she not see the pending overdraft fees, they told me sorry for that but yes you will be charged the aditional fees. WHAT THE HELL, I will now have over 200.00 in fees one is for a $1.00,what kind off bank chrges 37.50 for a dollor charge, then to top off this wonderful event, the supervisor i was speaking with told me the bank will not refund the fees and that is all she is going to say and then hung up on me. IS THAT WHAT BANK HAVE BECOME, ignorant sharks scamming the public. By the way the $1.00 charge that cost me 37.50 was because I checked my balance before i got gas to make sure i had the money.

Why the hell don't you just use your check register? That is your key to how much you have regardless. If you're angry about holds, go back to cash. I did as their lousy cards seem to read in only half of the terminals in the area businesses.

Banks relay on floating.... in fact how do they survive with out it ,, my spouses check is drawn on Bank of America, however M&T with give me the cash same day.. so if I right a check and "float " they should also give me that. I have seen my mortage come out after 2 day s" when I have $2000.00 in my account, but GOD help me if I am close to the 900.00 amount,.. that mortgage wont come out until i am at a .05.. then they will back out 6 transactions that cleared 2 days ealrier to try to over draft my a$$... i understand math isn't you're strong point, but are you smart enough to realize that every person that reads this is just wondering what kind of a loser has less than 80 bucks in their checking account? the funniest part is, you blame the bank for your own short comings.
