I know to avoid Midas in Rome, NY. I have learned through alot of good experience to just take it to the dealer. Mine is Carbone Pre-owned select in Rome. Tom, Dave and the rest have taken great care of my vehicles every time. FYI by NY state law always if you question the facilities honesty request to see the old parts. They have to show them to you by LAW. This applies to ALL type of vehicle repairs.

Took my vehicle there to get a quote on a complete exhaust system. Was told that it would be $2,045.00. Went to Auto Zone and bought all name brand parts for less than $800.00, and did it myself in 2 1/2 hours. Wonder what their labor rate is ???? RIP OFF.

On 08/24/2011 I had my Ford Fusion inspected by a reputable Mechanic . While the car passed inspection, the mechanic stated that down the road I would likely need some brake pads on the rear wheels. Unfortunately the Mechanic didn't not have time to install the pads that afternoon.
I went to Cole Muffler/ Herkimer Mavis in hopes of getting the pads installed. I told the sales/counter person that the tires has just been off, and the car passed the NY state Inspection, but I could use some pads put on the car. The Sales person stated he understood and wrote up the order to check rear brakes and estimate. An hour later the same sale person cam to me to "show me what we got into". The Sales person stated that I needed the rear pads, two rotors, and that both rear calipers where "broken and would not go back together". At that point I noticed all of the "needed" parts had already been pulled and ready to install. Do to the fact the salesperson told me The parts where all broke, i had no choice but to authorize the installation.
The total came to 678.27, a far cry then the cost of some pads being installed. I priced the same parts at retail, not whole sale like Mavis would get a half mile down the road, to find that they not only fraudulently repair vehicles they double the price on the parts. The Calipers alone where 183.94 a piece.
I find it hard to believe that a creditable mechanic would tell me to get some pads later down the road, and then Mavis would find everything so broken down, and so unusable that they could not even put it back together.
While I was waiting a customer told me how they gave her an estimate to fix a pipe of a 140.00, then changed it to over 400. It is a shame this is how these people do business in this economic time.
Go back to the place you had the car inspected and get a statement from them, then call New York State. If your telling the truth the state will get your money back and then they will deal with cole muffler/mavis and I mean they will take care of those people.

I have had a similar situation in Utica Cole Muffler. had brakes done on my car in Oct 2010. I received the lifetime warranty. On the shoes and pads back then, I still own the car, I took it down there on Friday for whatever brakes that neede to be done wheather it be front and backor one or the other. I had my reciept from back in 2010 and asked them to call before any work was done.# hrslater they called and told me the front ball joint was ready to go and the front brakes needed to be replaced, The back ones needed to be cleaned, and the front rotors needed to be replaced. Around $450.00 would be the bill. I said the vehical was in a shop for an accident to the front end damage for prety much the entire summer. My son needed to come up with the money to repair it. That mechanic fixed everything including inspection of brakes and ball joint and rotors. I picked up the car August 24 2012. I just told them to put it back together. I them emailed the coporate office and am awaiting a reply from them. I want my LIFETIME WARRANTY for the brakes. THAT IS IT. Any suggestions?

All of you people complaining about Cole Muffler/Mavis Tire and Monro Brake/Muffler NEED TO START DEMANDING THAT YOUR OLD PARTS ARE SAVED AND GIVEN TO YOU BEFORE YOU LEAVE. Also, while their mechanics are working on YOUR vehicle, stand at the end of the bay outside the bay door and WATCH them repair your vehicle, and I do mean watch them closely. Then you need to get those parts inspected by a mechanic who knows what he is doing and talking about. If he tells you that there is nothing mechanically wrong with the parts, KEEP those parts as evidence and call the NY State Attorney General's Office in Albany to file a complaint. Believe me, the Attorney General's office will contact the business and seriously LAUNCH AN INVESTIGATION INTO YOUR COMPLAINT. I have been hearing about and reading online complaints about these two businesses in Herkimer and their other locations for years now and until you people start to take collective ACTION against them, they will continue to let you know that you "NEED TO HAVE IT DONE IN ORDER FOR IT TO PASS INSPECTION", and will continue to perform UNNECESSARY REPAIRS ON YOUR VEHICLES. I wouldn't trust either one of those places based on what I've been hearing for years. They both have corporate sales quota figures they MUST meet on a monthly basis to keep the profits "rolling" in for their CEOs and so store managers can receive their performance bonuses. The way they accomplish this is by telling their customers(worrying and scaring them in the process) that they "NEED" parts replaced that really don't need replacing at that time. Watch them and what they're chargng you for CAREFULLY! Good Luck Everyone!

I sell used cars and used to have my brake work, etc. done at Mavis in Rome. They actually did good work for cheap prices for dealers. But recently things changed because Scott works there. Now they started trying to screw me like they do the retail customers. I started noticing more repairs than expected and higher prices, so my suspicion was raised. Recently Scott failed an inspection on one of my vehicles with a 400+ in phony repairs. What he didn't know was that I just had it at a real mechanic and there was absolutely nothing wrong with the vehicle. So that is obviously the last time I'm going there. So if you're smart don't go to Mavis.

Did you call the NY State Attorney General's Office in Albany to report this shop and what they did to you?? If not, you SHOULD and STILL CAN. Just be sure to have concrete PROOF of your allegations. The state will seriously investigate your complaint and report their results to you. That's what they are in place to do for the citizens of New York. Any shop (Mavis and Monro in particular) found to be deliberately ripping people off will be punished harshly, trust me, I've seen it happen.

... As a dealer I don't really have any recourse for consumer complaints. I complained to the company HQ and I have taken my frequent business elsewhere. And I'll never go there again. I also tell all the people who ask me where to go for brakes, etc NOT to go to mavis. At this point its all I can do.

I was ripped off there also. I bought some pads online and didn't have the time to put them on. I called Mavis/Cole and said can you install my pads. They said wait and let me check. A few seconds later a "manager" came on and said yes we can. I watched them put my car on the lift and then I got a call. These pads don't fit I was told. I said Im in the parking lot watching you and you didn't even take them out of the box. I was told that "he thought he was talking to a different customer". HOW MANY CUSTOMERS Bring their own pads in????? They then installed the pads and didn't even charge me. What a joke.
