CSEA and Country Manor

I read with interest the Evening Telegram story about the CSEA Union concern about "the residents" of the Country Manor and their effort to save the home. What a bunch of crap, the local head of the union could care less about residents of the home, it's only about a few full-time employees who could possibly lose their jobs or get transferred to a private concern. How much are we willing to pay on a yearly basis to keep a few jobs? The county states it is loosing $500,000.00 a year on the home, and has been for many years.

Bassett/VHS is building a beautiful new assisted living facility in East Herkimer, slated to be completed later in 2014, this means that any remaining residents of Country Manor could have a much nicer environment than the present run down facility.

Many counties throughout New York are getting out of the business of providing homes for the aged, it is a money losing proposition for governments.

Public sentiments have turned against public employees and unions of public employees, blame for current government financial conditions are blamed on these unions and demand for costly benefits. The reasoning of these unions must change and the change should start with truthfulness. This all seems like a power struggle by the Local Union Officials.

Country Manor is bleeding us, the taxpayers. It doesn't need a band-aid, it needs an amputation and tourniquet.

This is nothing but a load of crap. The reisdents should not suffer for mismanagement - and that's all it is. Yes - the workers have been blamed all over for the mismanagement from the state level down - blame the workers who care for the mentally ill - now they wander the streets all day instead of being useful and wanted and cared for -- blame the workers for wanting health insurance at $200 a payday - blame the workers who got 0% raises for two years in a row - blame the county workers for wanting a retirement plan -- blame DOT for the same................ we all want want want but don't want to pay........... The measure of a society is in how it treats its weakest............... and with these policies of dumping the old and infirm and those unable to care fo themselves................. we're going the wrong way. As for Couintry Manor, yes - let's dump it, and let's buy something nice for ourselves with the savings..................

many of the poor residents without family to help them wouldn't be moved to another facility. when the place shuts down, elderly people would be simply left on the side of Route 28 outside the County Manor to fend for themselves.

If they owned their own wheelchair, then at least they'd be on the side of the road in their wheelchair.

if they were using a county owned wheelchair, however, they'd be just left sitting or lying there on the side of the road. since they can't walk, what would happen to them?

they might get run over by a car. if they're outside all night, coyotes might eat them.

when asked recently about depositing residents on the side of Route 28, Vincent Bono, the chairman of the county Legislature, said,

"That's not our problem. Our duty is to the taxpayers."

They don't care where these people live. They are poor and the other adult homes in Herkimer County don't want them. VHS is building an assisted living place not an adult home. It will cost people more to stay with us at the new place. The county should use the money they want to give to the new company and pay us to keep them at our new place. They must have some deal with the company that wants to buy country Manor because the deal just don't make sense. If the county couldn't make a go of Country Manor how will this company do it and give the same salary and benefits to the staff? The paper says the county will pay them thousand to keep operating it. This is crazy. This smells fishy.Give the money to VHS they know how to operate a home and make it work.

Country Manor is classified as an Adult Assisted Living Facility, not an Adult Care or Nursing Home. I highly doubt the county will throw people to the road with no place to live. The County Home was originally built for the Mentally ill and those indigent, those times are well past. As taxpayers we can't afford to be in this business for a handful of residents.

The deal made between the county and advanced health care sounds very fishy to me. Ahc is willing to keep the union , keep employees at their current wages( some of the aides are making 14 or 15 $ an hr.) due to their longevity with the county. This is unheard of . I would be very suspicious . As far as the facility itself , advanced health care will be eligible for grants that the county was not. Last I knew the building had leaky roofs, poor heat system and sewer problems, a real money pit

. The state would never allow this to happen! The residence would all be placed in other facilities. I hope you are not expressing these sentiments to the residence and scaring them, just to keep your job!

The state can't make the other places take people who don't have the money to pay their own way..Obama hasn't forced that on us yet! They can tell the old folks to go live with their families or they are stuck going to Oneida County to Corn Hill area. Check it out. That's where the open slots are. The old UFA.

The way I understood it was between Alpine , Folts, VHS and Homestead, they could all be placed within the county

News alert.. Homestead won't take people who can't pay their own way. VHS and Alpine are nursing homes not the same as the Manor. Maybe Folts will take those who are broke because Folts is already broke. We ought to find out who this company is that's buying the Manor. Somebody is going to get rich on this deal and its not the taxpayers. Why not just give VHS some money and let them manage the whole thing. Then sell the manor like Rose suggested. This aint about jobs. Those guys employed at Manor have stopped working a long time ago. They sit around and complain. Talk with the residents and you's find out that it is a disgrace.
