I just read the article about the Village Board approving closing off Albany St near the Belly Up Pub to allow the owner to have an event like Saranac Thursday.

Well, I think the Village Board is nuts and didn't consider the problems involved. There are many differences between Saranac and the events planned by Belly Up.

1. Herkimer's Albany St is right next to a State Highway, how long will it be before someone wanders out into traffic or a motorist is distracted by the crowd or loud music.

2. Saranac is over early, normally by 9:00-9:30PM and is on a week-night. The Belly Up event will run until closing time 2:00AM and be on a Saturday night. Do residents want to hear crowds and loud music at 1-2AM?

3. Most of the Saranac event is on their own, private property. The street is closed only for admission and a food tent. The Belly Up wants to hold the event on the street. Can other stores have the streets closed once a week and setup business?

4. The Brewery reimburses the City of Utica for some of the costs associated with Public Safety, will the village ask for the same?

5. The Brewery donates the profits made at the Saranac evenings to support other community events and organizations.

To say that this will promote downtown Herkimer is laughable, other businesses and stores will be closed at those times. Well maybe it will support Petes and Burger King. Def will promote the police and EMS with fights!

Use your head Village Board.

I'm all for promoting downtown and Herkimer, but a

Was saying, I'm all for promoting downtown and Herkimer, but lets face it, the BellyUp is no Saranac Bewery. Also, what is there to promote in downtown Herkimer? Oh, maybe Burrito Jonz, another Village screw up.

I hope it goes over good. I do see some problems. but this will never promote main street. it will bring the trash out and it wont be garbage nite. this is not the way to promote the area. keep collis, weissiners, johnsons, tan inng place, barber shops, and level the rest. then offer the land to new business people of your liking. until the empty lots go use them for parking. level most, keep afew. nice for a party, but not every weekend. police will be on the chase, the village will make a fortune on fines. good luck to belly up. you have an uphill battle. be careful, this could be a way to shut you down.

You're right, but not to worry. belly headin belly-up

Belly Up is grasping at straws. Seems the bar business wasn't what she expected. Can you say "half price drinks".

Everyone thinks you end up with a million dollars...and you do...if you start out with 2 million.

This dumbass idea might fly if it was run once a month or even every 6 weeks from May-Oct. But if it's attempted every week for months...it will die quick.

Katie Nichols said it a great idea!!! These village board idiots continue to kill this village. How about doing some real work trying to attract business and clean up this mess of a downtown. All of the trees, flowers and parties won't help, we need real effort. What possible good can come out of this except lining the pockets of one business owner at taxpayer expense.

Harold Staffolano seemed to be the only one with any smarts on this issue, give approval for one or two times, see how it goes.

This village is in dire need of leadership.

BTW, if I use the Fishing Site or the park pavilion, I have to payn a fee, how much is BellyUp paying for the use of the street every week??????

Except they do a "block party" type event in front of Stony's Tavern on South Main Street at least once a year, which is mere feet from Rts 5/28.

"Thinking" clearly has nothing upstairs to think with.

Belly Up has a block party there every Saturday night now with all the fighting and loud talking. Not to mention the urinating and vomiting. If they close Albany St for this where will all the customers park? What happens if it rains? Where will everyone go? Inside the Belly Up? I don't think so, the bar is too small, if you have 30 people in there it's crowded. BTW, what is Belly Up's maximum occupancy? There is no maximum occupancy sign in there at all. Isn't that required by law?

I think this is great! I think this woman has a great head on her shoulders and is trying to get people out and moving. Drive through this Village at 9 pm on the weekend and you would think it was a ghost town. I always check for tumbleweeds on Main Street. Its really sad. I know a lot of people are supporting her efforts and that is awesome! At least she's trying. What are you doing? Being negative as usual. Don't like it. Stay home!

This misguided effort is for self-serving reasons and that's fine.

But every week is too much. If she lasts long enough she may figure things out. But I doubt it.

I'm lost as to how letting a bar serve and have entertainment outside every week serves the community. But you go ahead and applaud it.

Now if the bar wants to hold a fair, open at 11am, have rides for the kids, sell candy apples and cotton candy prior to the live entertainment that would be something for the community. But again every week would be too much and would get old quick.

By the way, has anyone talked to the ABC board???
See they have the final say in all of this. And in the interest of fairness all the bars will need to be allowed to serve beyond their "permitted" boundaries on "SERVE THE COMMUNITY SATURDAY".

Bad idea. Anything with booze involved you are asking for trouble. What about the open container law, fights,(which if you listen to the scanner happen every weekend there) I bet her insurance goes up alot. You know someone is going to get hurt. The hours are to late. Just asking for trouble.
