HERKIMER – The Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce is organizing a picket demonstration on Main Street to protest the prolonged delay in the opening of Burrito Jonz and to raise concerns over how the Tex-Mex eatery has used $30,000 in public funding.

“Our Chamber members and the community at large are fed up with this travesty,” said Chamber Executive Director John Scarano.“Hard-working taxpayers have in good faith invested $30,000 in this establishment in the hopes of creating jobs, adding to the tax base and filling the need for a Mexican-type restaurant in the Valley.”

“All we’ve seen from Burrito Jonz has been delays and excuses,” Scarano added.“We have some very serious questions over what’s happened to the taxpayer funding. This is looking more and more like a scam-a-rito.”

Picketing is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Burrito Jonz location at Main Street and Park Avenue. Members of the public are encouraged to join the demonstration, Scarano said.

Originally scheduled to open more than a year ago, Burrito Jonz received a $15,000 grant from the Herkimer County Industrial Development Agency in April 2012. The restaurant later received a $15,000 loan from the village of Herkimer, only to miss scheduled deadlines in an installment repayment plan.

Meanwhile, Burrito Jonz is shutting down its sole location on French Road in Utica as of August 31 after losing business to a new Moe’s Southwest Grill in New Hartford.

Reached in Acapulco, Mexico, by phone Monday, Burrito Jonz owner John Winter blamed the delayed opening on Herkimer Village Attorney Nick Macri, calling him “an incompetent boob.”

Winter said that he was in Mexico researching burrito recipes and declined further comment.

Just imagine how foolish the village officials and ida must feel.suddenly silent but knowing they've been played for fools.the whole village should be picketing and if he ever does open just boycott the loser.besides who in there right mind would want to bring their family on that street. We already know who his target audience was suppose to be. In utica he accepted food stamps illegally also story one can only imagine the clientele he will be entertaining.only in herkimer could something like this happen. Complete incompetence by village officials, corrupt ida and a burrito shack that takes 2 yrs to open.gimme aa break. Winters is a failure as a buisness man and a thief and liar.undoubtedly this was his intentions from the onset. Clearly he used the ida money to try to save his utica location all yhe while village officials were selling us a song and dance. Im sure kickbacks were paid because criminal charges for fraud would have already been brought against a local.say it isn't so.

Getting the correct recipe is necessary before the grand opening. Education is the best thing right now before any plans for an opening. Food will be served though for the picket on some new trial food to serve for Herk.

If this is true, then Mr Winters has misled the IDA and Herkimer Village Board. Professing himself to be an established entrepreneur. Which should certainly be grounds for fraud. Here's a guy who convinces everyone to back his business plan, Then decides to educate himself in the art of Buritto making. The only people dumber than this moron are the people who gave him the money. BTW folks. These are the same morons running our village.Be sure to congratulate the village board in the next election. Great job Mayor..........

There was a Mexican restaurant in the TP place for a short time. It was TERRIBLE. It closed suddenly with a sign that said, Gone to Mexico for better recipes. Of course, the place never reopened. This village will NEVER learn!

I think Mexico has him opening up there with the money given by the village. What was the village thinking when giving money to a business to go on Main Street Dump USA? was Da Loiya who helped it along to make happen.

I called this one way before the village coughed up another 15000 dollars. I mean really how desperate can the village be to attract buisness. With so many county residents who would have followed thru and actually opened. But no instead they go outside and work with this fly by night operator.its a total loss even if he were to open the negative connotations associated with this place and winters guarantees failure.funny so many small buisnesses in this town were opened by people using there own money.they never got county or village assistance. Instead you get that clown of a fireman and codes harrassing you. If a business cant open with its own money its not worth having. That goes for large or small. When will government officials realize that.

he is not a fly by night operator, he has been operating the BEST burrito place in Utica according to the Utica OD!

it is true that he has been suspected of molesting burritos, however he is not a fly-by-nighter sort of guy like you might find at a county fair

PLEASE BE PATIENT the long awaited BJ will be here and EVERYTHING will taste BETTER just for the waiting!

Oh ok douche tool just be patient huh? Seems like a year and a half is extremely patient. He is in default on his loan from the village and violated the terms of the ida grant. I hope they arrest this fraud the minute he steps foot in herkimer again.regardless his delay has done to much damage to his buisness before it has a chance.and as far as utica that location has been closed.

on behalf of the hundreds of outraged citizens, business representatives and public officials who staged an angry but peaceful picket demonstration in front of the alleged Burrito Jonz location this week I would like to thank Moe's Southwest Grill for surprising the crowd with its delivery of all those free and delicious burritos tacos quesadillas and more!

Moe's clearly saw an opportunity to curry favor (though they are not an Indian restaurant) with the Jonz picketers and their generosity in providing a free lunch to a hungry crowd was very much appreciated!

it is good to know that Moe's Southwest Grill is planning to open a new restaurant in Herkimer and that they will not be looking to the taxpayers for a $30K handout!

That's okay ... they are now doubling down on a slaughterhouse for worn-out dairy cows. Herkimer County is going places! Silicon Valley, watch out!
