180 days/year in NY, last time I checked.

Most people don't understand how the school year
is set in NY. There is no number of days set for
the school year, but the state will only pay state
aid for 180 days of attendance. If you go fewer
days you lose state aid; if you go more days you
don't get any additional state aid. Therefore,
most schools go the 180 days to receive the
maximum state aid, and not more days because that
will cost them more in operating expenses which
the state will not reimburse you for. Most
schools go an additional four or five days for
conferences and training. There are proposals now
to increase both the length of the school day
and the number of days of attendance. Contact
your legislators and tell them you are in favor
of these proposals.

As inefficient as local schools are are, shown by their budget deficits and low performance, added days without fundamental change and addressing the core issues will only add to an already huge problem. The issue is not State reimbursement or taxes, but rather how the money is spent.Teachers complain, perhaps justifiably that many students are not properly equiped or ready for school day instruction. These same teachers say that they will or can not intervene regarding these core issues.Instead of throwing money at a situation and hope that something will stick, invest money in Head Start and other social progrmas that will help the teachers and educational system. There is plenty of money out their, just not distributed or used wisely.

So you are saying that parents cannot prepare
their children to enter school? I guess the
"state" needs to take them away at birth and
raise them in the proper manner. Sounds like
more social programs to me, and more taxpayers'
money. Of course, you say that there is plenty
of money out "their". It sounds like you believe
spending more money is the answer. What about
holding parents more responsible for the edu-
cation of their children? Let schcols get back
to teaching the basics and let parents raise
their kids.If the kid fails it's the parent's
responsibility.Out of school then and off to
the world of work or the military. It's time
to stop trying to send everyone to college.
Send the best to college and the rest to work.
