I am tired of seeing individuals names on topics..

I am sick of seeing subjects about people with their whole name being used, written by "anonymous" people just looking to start trouble. If you have beef with someone say it to their face. This is the lowest form of cowardice, and it's sad. Some fantastic people have had their names dragged through mud, some people were more then deserving. But still these are people, I thought the point of topix was to get mutual people together to improve towns, advertise businesses, meet new friends not be pigs anonymously. If you have crap to say about someone use your real name, stop hiding.

it is indeed saddening and a disturbing reflection of human nature. you are right, Topix could be an engine for good -- for sharing, for learning, for networking.

Alas, the coward worms abuse the forum to slander individuals by name to such a degree that mahy decent people seldom utilize the forum.

Topix has a well deserved reputation as being primariy a gutter place for gutter people. not all users, of course, but many.

sad. mandatory registration to post would help to reduce the poison that is spread here, but will never happen because it would reduce traffic and hence revneues.

I certainly do not contribute to the things I detest, namely the use of real names in a derogatory manner. N.B. that others have appropriated the name "troubled youth" since I coined it, so if you've seen a "troubled youth" maligning another individual by name, I assure you that it was not me. Whether you believe that or not is irrelevant.

As to your other point -- you missed it. Virtually no one on Topix would use their real name should registration become mandatory (not that it ever will). I do not suggest that they would or they should.

I do suggest that mandatory registration would give pause to the evil-doer and plant a seed of doubt as to whether registration might, down the road, lead to an exposure of their identity and the crimes against decency that they commit with every post and comment re "Jill Schmoe is a blankety blank" and threads of similar ilk.

As applies to matters of law, you are correct -- slander is spoken, libel is written.

However, this is Topix, not a courtroom. "Slander" is perfectly acceptable within the common vernacular as synonymous with "malign." Definition from dictionary.com :

2. a malicious, false, and defamatory statement or report: a slander against his good name.

And once again, I do not trash people by their names. I find the practice reprehensible. Believe me or not, I couldn't care less.
