And when you tell your neighbor to clean up but they don't, then what? Exactly, you call the codes enforcer, who does nothing about it either. Part of the problem might be a lack of residents getting involved but the other part of the problem are selfish people who won't clean up after themselves.
Lets not forget Harvard on the Hill HCCC, is the puppetmaster pulling the Village strings.
When it doesn't work to talk to your neighbor, you go back in groups and ask again. If a group of people walk up to your door and tell you to clean your house up, you are going to make an attempt.. If you do nothing, that's what you get. As far as being intimidated to walk up to someone's door, that's on you. I will and I have and it's made a difference. If you want to stay afraid or your neighbors, maybe you should move somewhere where you don't have the problem. Be part of the solution of don't be, it's on you, but to blame one person for an entire villages problems is ridiculous. Funny though, Walmart moved in, mom and pop stores disappeared and now no one wants to walk Main Street. Who would have saw that coming.

50 yeas ago no one saw it coming because it didn't happen in the cut and dried manner you suggest.

Walmart was preceded by Nichols Discount City and Kmart. Fays Drugs ... many more nationwide brand name retailers, bigger -- cheaper -- faster. People loved it. Isn't this great.

In the beginning the big box trend cut into the margins of smaller stores, but most could survive at least through the late 70s and into the 80s. Then they started dropping because people bought more and more at Walmart ... and shopping at malls in Utica...

The effect has been gradual over nearly a half-century. Coupled with the loss of manufacturing jobs and reliance on minimum wage Walmrt and McDonalds jobs.

And now you see the full and tragic effect on Main St Herkimer.

Boarded up windows and abandoned windows. No commerce to speak of.

And a welfare-sucking population that looks like it walked straight off the set of The Walking Dead, making quite unlikely any meaningful recovery for Main St.

Lets also not forget to include those nationwide chain stores that were cornerstones of Main Street, Woolworths's and Montgomery Wards. Those were not mom and pop stores in the least. They were predecessors to the bigger stores like Walmart, Target, etc....

But they were located downtown. That was good for downtowns.

The push for bigger and cheaper led to the construction of much larger stores with large parking lots necessarily peripheral to the urban core. e.g., Nichols Discount City.

Nationwide chains in and of themselves were not the death knell for downtowns such as Herkimer's. The death knell was the migration from the urban core. Had Woolworth's, Montgomery Wards, Grants et al somehow managed to stay put on Main St., Main St. would be exponentially more vibrant and attractive than it is today.

Oh wait -- does that suggest that Main St. is even the least bit vibrant and attractive? Never mind.

I have to agree with you that Nichols and Monkey Wards were there at first and it didn't stop the local mom and pop places from continuing on. My point is and will remain that the large box stores are what made Main Street like it is, the community allowed it by buying into the idea of new jobs, more jobs, etc.. now Main Strett looks like crap, but, it's not the end of the world, things can always come back and they will. But, the community has to want it, not one or two people. If the community isn't behind you, then you fail. Period. I remember shopping at Nichols, Knickbockers, Mont Wards. I don't remember Fay's Drugs, and really wouldn't call it a store killer anyway. But like someone else said, the majority were on Main. Now you just need something new and revitializing for Main. Small restaurants have always done well in that area. Maybe that's the answer. Close main from the old Marine Midland Bank (if it still exists) to Rt 5. make it a walking area of mom and pop restaurants. Detour large chains like pizza hut away and make it a "walking district" All cities have them and they do great.... Just a suggestion.

The big box stores brought with them the idea of lower prices by bulk buying throughout their network of stores. Too many people bought into that cheaper mentality and it has done plenty to drive down wages along with the economy. Main Street is yet another casualty of that, as is the community. Somehow those early predecessors of the big box stores managed to co-exist with the smaller shops. Nowadays not even K-Mart can keep pace with the Goliath known as Walmart.

The death of Main Street is but only part of the devastation for Herkimer. I don't see the college as much of a benefit to this village either.

Check out 'the real herkimer' on Facebook. The author of that page took excellent photos of the current condition of many run down buildings in Herkimer. It is excellent documentation of absentee landlords and owners who don't care. And how the codes department has been getting paid to sleep on the job for years. Check it out. Excellent!

It's just a matter of time before a fire takes out one of those dilapitated buildings, and then everyone will know that it's been YEARS since any real codes inspection has been done. I reported to Kuenhle that most of the apartments in a building on South Main had no smoke or CO2 detectors and he got real pissy with me. Yea, he collects a pay check from HFP and for codes enforcement. The guy is a disgrace and a joke.

Let's do it instead of bitching about it.The Real Herkimer on Fb is an eyeopener! Gives the names of the building owners and which blgs they own..Charlie Celi is the worst slumlord of all. His buildings are in horrifying condition with debris feces and garbage all around the outside. I'm scared what the inside looks like. Let's boycott his business until he actually cleans up his places. It's a disgrace!

Even better, let find who owns what and we can have our kids bully their kids until they actually clean their places.

We are raising awareness about Main Street. I guess this isn't the right place to do it due to the low level of people's mentality that post here. Don't criticize people for standing up for what's right and trying to make changes. Now go back to the rock you crawled out from. You're the problem
