Hope she or he can stop families from yanking their kids out of herkimer schools. Heard they are up to 13 leaving, maybe more. Can't make a case for keeping programs if kids are leaving.

Just because kids receive free lunch you consider people to be scumbags? Hmmm I work full time and so does my husband and our children receive free lunch. How does that make us scumbags? Please explain to me how a 2 parent household with 2 full time careers are scumbags because our children receive free lunch? Ignorance is abundant around here if you think that way. Not to mention who the hell wants to pay hard earned money for the garbage the school feeds our kids. Thankfully I make my kids lunch everyday so I guess that makes me a scumbag too. People will complain about everything I swear. Is it hard to get down from that pedestal you've put yourself on?

Administrators should have to have at least 10 years of classroom experience and they should have to teach at least one class per day while they administrate. Most are out of touch with kids and with the teaching profession because they're not actively involved anymore. Yet they make the critical decisions that affect kids most. They cut programs, classes, and teachers that keep kids engaged in school. Kids drop out or transfer out and they wonder why enrollment goes down.

I happen to agree with you about requiring significant experience, keeping teaching skills fresh, and having administrators continue to teach even if it's one class every couple of years. On the flip side, I think we all need to appreciate that administrators have more on their plates these days in the way of having to deal with difficult kids and even more difficult parents who have much lower standards for good behavior. I don't claim to know the half of it, trust me, and I sure know that there are some awful administrators out there (isn't Herkimer paying the price for that right now, in many ways?). But I've been watching the education system for a very, very long time and anyone can see that the attitudes, values, morals and parental skill level of those who are breeding children these days is, as a whole (not everyone of course), deteriorating. That directs resources away from programs of growth and opportunity. It makes good families want to get their kids out because there's nothing left to offer them. Go to the school on any given day or attend a sporting event. The behavior on the part of parents is appalling. I see administrators having to fight with parents just to do what is right, issue discipline to a kid, etc. Hate to sound like a geezer but back in my day if a principal wanted to discipline me, I got in twice as much trouble at home for being a pain at school and for taking the focus off of learning. Bottom line, one of the keys to improvement is to demand more participation and support from parents too, to the extent possible. Otherwise all we're doing is asking administrators to run a glorified and chaotic daycare for wayward kids - and teach on top of it. Wouldn't that make you apathetic too after a while?
