I am very happy for the students. How sad that Herkimer students will continue to be behind the 8 ball and be left in the dust.

So go there. I am happy in Herkimer. My kids consistently get 6, 7, even 8 honors. If your kids are losers who choose 3 study halls instead of wanting to learn then that's your problem. They will not change because of a new district. Actually, once people see how the money is squandered and how the kids are not better off and how everyone is not all of a sudden a model student, maybe they will smarten up and come to Herkimer where you have a normal K-6 elementary school and a normal 7-12 high school, all with a sense of one community. When enough people choose this enrollment will actually go up, tax base will increase, and state aid will increase as enrollment increases. You'll see. The school just needs to market and show what is different from the new merged district and there will be people that prefer this. Like me.

You make it sound like the district will be HUGE! The graduation classes will be around 170-180, similar to the class size 30-40 years ago. What people don't understand is the merger would be successful without the additional aid, that is the gravy on top. I didn't vote for the first two proposals, I didn't like the logistics of it. I hold no ill will towards Frankfort or herkimer, I thank them for getting us to this point and wish them luck with their dilemma.

Unless you're a favorite both guidance counselors at Herkimer are worthless.

Herkimer is going to hurt as a result of their mistake and the merged district right next door is going to be a constant reminder.

The tax base is dependent upon TAXABLE properties and is not affected by school enrollment numbers. About half of Herkimer is non-taxable real property to begin with.

With the amount of retakes and second, third and fourth chances teachers at Herkimer give students, saying your kids get any honors really doesn't say anything. It is more to fact that the teachers gave them honors they never really earned in the first place. Given Herkimer's poor testing scores and graduation rates, its more to fact that people like you, content with give aways to your kids, are the real problem with the school districts.

Hate to tell you, dear, but with Herkimer's overall testing performance in the bottom 10% of all schools in upstate NY, your kids honors mean absolutely NOTHING as their performance on standardized tests are part of those numbers ! That sadly means they are not as smart as you think they are. You may not know it, but colleges and corporate HR departments do !

Herkimer's issues are not going to get better. They do not have enough teacher's to move into areas where performance is weak, and no one is certain yet what additional teacher's will be laid off. Marketing can attempt to put lipstick on that pig, but it is still a pig.

Before your kids get too far into school, you might want to talk with current college kids who have gone "away" to school. Most will give you an honest assessment on where your kids will have shortfalls academically in college. You can then get tutors. Fair warning........I have yet to hear one honest to goodness student in a out of town 4 year institution who felt well prepared relative to kids from districts outside of the area. As someone who has had experience with both Herkimer and well performing schools, the differences are ENORMOUS !

Yea Yea Yea my kids are consistently getting 6,7 EVEN 8 honors. What are they in kindergarten? My kid is certainly NOT a loser and in eleventh and 12th grade she had no choice in having studyhalls!!! They offered NOTHING you jerkoff! My child went to BOCES for a great program but the other half of the day she had no choice to have nothing but studyhalls because they offered nothing! As a parent I went there to tell them I don't want my child in studyhalls but their excuse was sorry there is nothing available for those times. So before you go calling other children losers and stick up for your own princess get your facts straight!! Go and talk to these kids, most if not all will tell you Herkimer High School is a freaking joke, they don't offer anything and when they get ready for college hah what a joke. So good for you for having a eight honors student and having it all work just grand for you but....it doesn't happen very often. You should be careful for calling other kids LOSERS because it makes you sound like a LOSER!!!!!! Good for Mohawk and Ilion...they made the right choice for the CHILDREN!!!

What's the passing grade for HHS? Because I'm sure it's 65. Compared to where I went to school, which was 70. Herkimer, to me, sounds like they cater to students/childrens WANTS, rather than their NEEDS. If your kid(s) went to a school with a higher passing grade, and academics that actually challenge your brain, would they still achieve the same success?

Uh, hate to break it to you but the passing grade is determined by NYS Education law and it is 65 in ALL NYS schools. Has been for decades.

So go there then. Nobody is chaining you to Herkimer. Ask the Tangorra kids next year if they are glad they are going to school in Ilion. Will they even be going to Ilion? If not why not. If so then ask them a few months into the schoolyear if they are glad they are there. But make sure daddy Tangorra isn't listening in so they can give you an honest answer.
