There is wrong information with public pensions. Once retired, the district/government agency does not pay one's retirement. Once they are off the books, that's the end of it. However, IF they choose to keep contracted benefits, such as health insurance, the district continues to pay the regular portion and the employee pays their portion for the duration - depending on the negotiated benefits. Remember, negotiations are agreed upon by both parties - they are not one-sided. If a teacher retires on a pension, that pension check has nothing to do with the district, it comes from the NYS pension fund. The only monies put into the fund are for current employees, not past.

What does one have to do with the other ? It is not like the top 50 ranked schools do not have a full slate of extra curricular activities far greater in depth than Herkimer.

I'm assuming when you say both parties agree, that you are speaking of the union and the school board? What portion of these extended benefits are paid for? What are the co-pays? Do they continue to receive dental and eyeglass care?

I dont disagree lets cut the Dental and Vision because they are so cheap they can pay for them themselves. Do retirees receive full major medical?

I can assure you the problems with Herkimer High School do not stem from the "filthy, greedy, blood-sucking, and taxpayer-raping" teachers. Despite a community that shows them almost no support, as evident from wonderfully phrased statements of ideology such as that, Herkimer High School has some of the finest academics and educators one could ever hope their child to encounter.
