It looks wonderful. What an improvement.

I agree. It's a MAJOR improvement. Hopefully, it'll increase some property values in the areas immediately around the filled-in areas. But where have the workers been? I haven't seen anyone working in weeks.

Someone told me that there was a blurb in the Telegram recently how the company hired to complete the job underestimated their bid, and was out of money? I looked on the website, but couldn't find any mention of it other than the older stories. Any truth to that?

At my company, if we underbid a project, and it costs more than we estimated, guess what? We eat the overage. Are we going to look at a 90% finished project until the village coughs up whatever it costs to finish it?

Anyone know if they plan on putting in new fencing along people's backyards? I'm sure those property owners don't want people walking through their yards...

All good questions. Probably can get the answers at a board meeting. Now the question that everyone that lives south of state street has "What about us"? The Smith Bros. own the rest of the canal.

We live south of State and we really don't mind the canal, just wish it wasn't so damn dirty. The parking lots are nice, but it;s only a matter of time before they are trashed like alot of other things in Herkimer. It would be nice if they got rid of the scum on the south side, busted all the dope dealers in the "apartments" on smith and washington, re-opened Perry st (wtf is up with that BTW)and just cleaned house.

All valid observations. What parking lots are you referring to?
Do you live next the canal? I know folks that do that have to put rat traps out every day and then have to dispose of the rats they catch. Please elaborate on what you mean by "so damn dirty". I am just trying to gather input; I am not picking on you. As far as "scum", don't fool yourself drugs are being dealt everywhere in this village, even "behind the hospital". However. I do agree that the so called apartments are a big problem. Absentee landlords comprise a good portion of owners. There are good laws and regulations on the books. They just have to be enforced.

the park they're making looks nice, but now you can see the back yard of the house on n. washington next door to where the diner was. what a shithole. they probably liked it when the trees and weeds covered their filth. now anyone driving down willow ave can see their back yard. you mentioned property value, i can't wait to hear all those people start bitching when they find out their property taxes are going up.

I just saw The village crews are cleaning up trees, shrubs etc along the Adirondack Bank and Enea's parking lots. What a day to be doing that.

Really? C'mon now Calm. You're a biker. Doesn't the Nazi style road blocks for bikes only make money?

Or the parking meters?

I wonder if the village would allow the folks across from the fill-in to plant community gardens on each block. What a good way for the families to celebrate finally and come together.

Which side of the restaurant? The brown house or the white/light blue one?

It does look better, but so far all I see are long stretches of dirt with a sidewalk going through them. Is it ever going to be finished and what else do they plan on doing with it? At this rate it should be finished next spring. At least they made sure to get the political sign thanking our a_hole Governor up right away.

Most of the backyards of those houses along there on N Washington look that way. Disgusting, I agree. Also I have already seen several people allowing their dogs to take big old health shits in the new "parks". I am sure it wont be long until whatever is done with it is ruined by the trash that occupies the majority of Herkimer.

Yeah, people should be fined if they don't clean up after their dogs. And the walkway going down the middle, is that considered a sidewalk? Will they have to use the sidewalk plow on it? or will they leave it covered in snow. Hopefully they put something at the end of the paths, otherwise it's just paths that lead nowhere just half a block down. Is there a design or plan, like a drawing or sketch, to look at to see if it was thought through? They should have one at the village offices, I would think. Or did the foreman of the project look at the empty space and just say, put some paths there to make it look nice. And of course they people who own houses along there will complain about their assessments going up. They complained before that the canal was too filthy, and now they will complain that it's too nice and don't like how much their properties increased in value because they border something nice instead of something filthy. All people do is complain. Isn't that what this topix forum is for?

Since I started this thread, I have been thinking. Could be very dangerous territory for me:)

Has anyone or does anyone know whether there are any natural springs that run into the hydraulic or is just standing rain water?

Do you think anyone has ever thought the big "ditch" could be classified as a wetlands?

This is a legitimate question and not an invitation to crazy comments. I do however, realize crazy comments are a direct consequence of posting on this forum.

They should have never filled it in. The village could have used it for their new sewer system they have to fix.
