The board scheduled a public hearing for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, on a local law that would allow the village to override the state’s 2 percent cap on the tax levy if necessary for the 2014-15 budget. The next regular meeting is scheduled for a Tuesday because Monday, Jan. 20, is a holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Tell them the answer is NO

Why? The library is not on their budget anymore. Didn't they pick up a bunch of money there?

Exactly. Here is a simple three step solution to the revenue shortage:

1) Cut health benefits 10% Cut pensons10%, No double dipping after you retire. Let someone else have a job you gravy sucking pigs.

2) No more overtime

3) This is the easiest one of all .STOP SPENDING MONEY YOU DON'T PHUCKING HAVE.

See? It's not that hard.

Thank you

Time for our voices to be heard. Don't allow them to override the 2% cap. Enough is enough

come on now jim stop posting. Doesn't Schuyler have it's own site. We can all thank Bob Schrader and Ray Johnson for making good use of the time the lawsuits has given the county. Now that the $40 million jail has been held up in court, they now may only build a $15 million jail and it can go to the pumpkin patch. If Herkimer didn't sue, we'd have the Hendrix memorial built at the P&C/ Thank you village of Herkimer board and citizens. We owe you a debt of gratitude. Johnson and Schrader at the men!! BOO HOO Bono go home!!

We are in great shape.

The village and the school will be needing to lift the tax cap to survive.

Maybe Hartman can help, he's home doing nothing. Unless he's cleaning one of his Remington's.

Probably on keeping their cushy retirement benefits and health benefits with ridiculously low premiums for employees while the village funds almost all of the cost of these crazy premiums (technically as far as benefits are concerned they are ALL village employees). And as you know everyone in the public sector wants a raise even though people on the private sector are getting pay freezes, pay cuts, or losing their jobs. Also, when someone needs a little extra money they fix themselves up with 'needing to work overtime' by finding a few things to do at night. Many of these guys, if not all, have contracts stating that minimum overtime pay per instance is 3 hours even if they are only needed for 30 minutes. So you have these guys sometimes flushing 2 or 3 firehydrants a night for a few nights in a row, and periodically removing already melted snowbanks for 3 nights at 2am year after year. And that's just part of it. So in order to keep the status quo, and keep everyone involved with their happy lifestyle, just raise taxes. It certainly is easier than rocking the boat and making everyone mad at you because you are trying to lower your co-workers' standard of living. Not to mention your own. So let's raise taxes more than 2%. It's easier to raise 4 or 5 hands than it is to ruin your career by doing the right thing and in the process making enemies in this little town. Go to the meeting. Let them know they too have to be fiscally responsible. Remind them they are not Gods, remind them they work for us, the people of Herkimer.

There was a minimum for getting called in for overtime - I wasn't eligible - but I do understand. Be for real - I didn't expect people to come in for 1 hour of pay - come on - would you? During the day, people cry and complain if work is done, so they do it at night - BECAUSE OF ALL THE DAYTIME COMPLAINTS. There's just no winning. It really is a thankless job - pubilc wants more than they get, but don't even want to pay for what they do get. I'm glad the hydrants are flushed, I'm glad the water's clean, I'm glad the streets are plowed..... I don't see anybody volunteering to do it. Take away the off shifts, take away the overtime (like somenoe else stated), but don't cry about stuff not getting done. That's what happened with NYS services to people no one wants to take care of.......... same theme, different players.......... Also, as far as NYS retirement, the employer pays NOTHING to it when someone retires. If you know someone who's retired, their check comes from NYS retirement - it's self sustaining. I used to work for the pubilc - but it's awful..........just no winning and the pay's about half of what's in private. Everybody that complains about how "lucritive" it is - hasn't done it.
more at stake this time

If Herkimer overrides the 2% cap - their residents will NOT be eligible to participate in the Governors new property tax savings program(announced last week). Based on your income, you will be receiving fairly substantial 'discounts' on your property taxes.

This new program is being funded by NYS nearly $3 billion surplus.

Herkimer WILL NOT QUALIFY if the 2% cap is overridden.

Finally, a politician who knows how to align motivations with desired outcomes.

This is the governor's way of dictating even more to us. "If you do what I say, I'll give you a $50 rebate." Even more will be dictated by those "outside." Dont be fooled - the "rebate" isn't coming if you don't go over 2%- read the proposal -there's a LOT more to it. If you do this, and if you do this, and if you then also do this. How about "I know you're burdened with unfunded mandates, let me take care of that." Don't fall for it. We should control our own.......... not let someone else control it. This is a bad, bad path..........
