If the cops don't chase people who are blatantly breaking the law a can of worms is going to be opened that no one wants to deal with. If they don't go after these people then they will know that they can break the law and just drive like a maniac to the next Village and they can get away with breaking the law.

I love the fact that you complain about taxes for the services but I bet you dont hesitate one second to use them. If you knew exactly where your tax money goes then you would know that the Village of Herkimer along with every other municipality that has a police agency pays insurance for incidents like these. Just because there is a 2 million dollar law suit does not mean its an automatic win for the plaintiff. Even if she did win, the money does not come right from a village account. Anybody can sue over anything. But just remember, the suspect plead to the manslaughter which means he takes responsability for the action. Every police officer in NYS is in a retirement system, so stop acting like you have the big burden of being the only one. But I bet you use the service if you need it and I bet they answer your call for you. Let me guess, If one of them were to lose their life protecting you and your family, you would most likely complain on topix that your taxes would be affected by a death benefit. If you are so worried about the state of your community, then stop complaining on this site and do something about it. Remember, the only thing standing between your so called perfect lifestyle and complete chaos in this village is that police department. And Im going to base this on what I see in the downtown and near the college as I drive to and from work.
You sounded smart up until you made mention of the guilty plea to manslaughter. That is a criminal matter that has absolutely no bearing on the CIVIL suit. It may be considered is but a minor factor.

Fail.

Given the operations of the HPD, they are more likely to die of DWI before being killed in the line of duty. That, too, would get covered up.

Like Crim's DWI that was a tiny little blurb in the bottom corner of the paper. No mention of the accident or the fact he was a cop.

You people are sickening, whether someone was killed or not people always look to blame someone for something, when anything goes wrong it's always somebody else's fault! That officer had a second to think his reaction, he did what he was trained to do, he did a split second decision, sadly it ended in a crash and someone innocent was killed, it wasn't an outcome he foreseen in that split second decision. Had he just let the suspect continue on his way, do you know that he wouldn't have continued speeding? Do you know that he wouldn't have caused an accident or injured anyone else? NO YOU DO NOT! But because of what resulted you want to place blame on the officer who was trying to protect the public and catch the suspect! He radioed to have help in stopping the suspect, they did all they could at that moment! In society today everyone is looking to sue someone, everyone wants to blame someone, this time, the only blame lies on the man who commit the act, the Conklin! Had he stopped, none of this would have happened! You sit on here and downgrade the police, but when it's you that needs them, guess what, they are there, even when they know you bad mouthed them!!!!why??? Because its the oath they took to serve and protect without prejudice! You should all be ashamed of you finger pointing, remember while your pointing that finger, there's more pointing back at you!

people rarely run, unless being chased…..the authorities knew who it was….people seem to forget a big part of the story here, the poor victim was not killed outright, she passed away later at the hospital…..remember how the story changed that the officer was in high speed pursuit….but…..after the woman did pass away, the story was changed, to something to the effect of…..the officer stopped the pursuit, when he deemed it to be too dangerous to continue……after all that distance and all that speed, funny how he chose to terminate the pursuit, when and only when, the poor woman died.( version #2 of the story ) that is the fact, that is going to hang that officer and the department

The sky isn't falling. The village is fine our school is fine. Everyone wants to make thing out to be bigger than they are. So we cut four or five more positions in our school and our village goes bankrupt. What's the big deal, we're fine.

Oh and we all know how the press gets the story absolutely correct all the time!! Please! The media runs with whatever info they are given at the time, doesn't mean it's accurate info! If you rely solely on the newspapers, well, you might want to educate yourself a bit better!
