This is the very definition of a 'self-fulfilling prophecy'. Negative people saying negative comments which produces negative results which creates negative people. All the name-calling and intelligence-slamming tells me that you find no greater pleasure than trolling for things to disturb with your narrow-minded opinions.
Main Street fell because consumers found malls and shopping centers more attractive than individual shops. And that was because the prices were lower due to bulk purchasing from the manufacturers. And price became an issue because industry was, is, and will probably continue to pull out of NY like rats abandoning a sinking ship. When the leading employer of an area is Walmart, and the next biggest is a convenient store, there's a HUGE economic problem. Decent jobs generally means decent people. Low wage jobs often breeds government-dependent individuals who work harder at 'not' working than actually working.
Do your part to improve your neck of the woods...where ever that is. Vote these piss-poor excuses for politicians out of office. Can't hurt. At least with the next person, you have a 50/50 shot at them doing something constructive. Help your neighbor out once in a while. Get off your collective asses and stop whining about how everything sucks and that it'll never get any better. I 100% guarantee you that if the pissing and moaning continues, then nothing will ever change. Try finding solutions (and acting on them where possible) to the problems instead of insisting on being the "I-told-you-so" person. NO ONE likes that person. If you're so knowledgeable on what won't work...then feel free to let everyone know what 'will' work...and act on it. We're a nation of people bred into a world of convenience. And with convenience comes laziness.
Do everything in your part to enhance your village, to make it presentable to potential investors/businesses/industry/ new residents and the problem will be well on its way of taking care of itself. Start by not expecting the village to do everything for you. It's YOUR village, YOU live there. If you don't like trash blowing around on the ground, pick it up. Doing that means getting a little exercise, and is cheaper than getting a gym membership...something many of us could use. Does your trim need some paint?...PAINT IT! Don't get into the "Why bother, the neighborhood is going to hell anyway" attitude. Put pressure on your elected officials. They are your neighbors. They need to see that you care and that you're not going to be complacent. No one else is going to live your life for you. The US Constitution does not start with "We The Sheeple..."
I am a former Herkimer resident so I have a basis for my opinion because I saw what Herkimer 'used' to look like. And if you find offense in what I've said, than you're the very person who this is directed at. Prove me wrong.
I agree 100%, its the only thing that makes sense on this thread, No Negativity <3 .

No...I think I addressed the low income issue correctly. I think you put it in more crude terms though.

I have no delusions that the welfare system is easily fixed and everything will be rosey afterwards. But 'nothing' is 'insoluble and intractable'. It's a matter of how much effort and work is needed, and whether or not people are on board to do what needs to be done. If you decide to do nothing, then your reality is that it's impossible to fix and nothing will ever change. With anything of value...if you don't maintain it, it will pretty much rot on it's own. But to clean it up, you need to put some effort into it.

It's a complex system that clearly enables many people to be their 'worst' and creates an environment to breed future generations of like-minded people. Without pride or a feeling of self-worth, anyone on the system will likely stay on the system. Like I said, better jobs means more people are employed and the overall class of people changes. That is a huge part of Herkimer's problem (like thousands of other towns and cities across the nation) and needs to be addressed along with ANY revitalization project or plan. But we all know NYS is not business-friendly and will allow this type of economic scenario to live long and prosper until that fateful day comes when our politicians come to their senses and start working for us and not for their political supporters and special interest groups. Believe me...I'm not holding my breath for that to happen anytime soon.

But, as the saying goes, "A journey of 1,000 miles begins with the first step". No sayings or catchy phrases will magically fix the woes of our society overnight. But everything has to start somewhere. I'd rather go to my grave knowing I did what I could, rather than lamenting that I was one of the "it'll-never-change" crowd.

And if your screen name indicates your support for that group...I must say, I'm a bit confused. It sounds more like you're anti-herkimernow. But maybe that's the joke that I missed.

I parked on Main Street while a friend went into Collis Hardware the other day. Pretty sad when a local bar front is the best looking building on the street. Kudo's to Pete's Bar for a decent looking front. And "No" I am not a patron nor have I ever been in the place.

Um. Mason has has been out of main street for well over 10 years. He sold to some other guy, who probably had to sell to someone else afterward. Get with it.

Let me count the ways my love:

Clear views (So many empty stores you can see from front to back through the windows)

Plenty of walking traffic for businesses (none work so they dont have cars)

Free money (lots of 5 cent empties laying around.)

Public restrooms (you can figure thatt one out)

Natural scenery (Woody boarded up windows)

Free smokes (they are all over the place but you have to hurry, plenty of competition for the half smoked butts)

Free porn (asses hanging out all over the place andscantily clad pajama women

See its great here but sorry no more bath salts at the corner store

i have been an instrumental member of www.herkimernow.org since its inception.
that doesn't mean I'm particularly optimistic that a meaningful improvement in the dreadful socioeconomic conditions that plague Main Street can be accomplished
my philosophy which is shared by other "realistic" members of wwww.herkimernow.org (not the la-la-la members wearing rose-colored glasses) is that we should do whatever we can to effect some degree of improvement e.g. painting and sweeping
it is something of a "triage" approach within the obvious limitations of an organization such as www.herkimernow.org , or you could say,
"PUTTING LIPSTICK ON A PIG"
Well, no offense intended (this is the most civil exchange of a disagreement I've ever seen on a Forum topic), but if the goal of the group is to work towards the revitalization of the Main St. area (and all that it entails), I think yours, and any other member's 'realistic' philosophy you mention would best be served with perhaps joining another group. I'm not saying that snotty-like, but I can't see how the group will ever have a chance to succeed if a portion of its members are half-heartedly involved with the cause. Seems like a waste of a lot of people's time if they're part of something they don't fully believe in. It should be an 'all-in' proposition, don't you think? No one expects miracles, and positive results will take time and effort. But I think any group with a cause in mind deserves the full support and backing from its members.

I, like other former Herkimer residents, remember a vibrant Main St. I don't think that anyone has illusions of Main St. looking like it did 30 years ago. But even with everyone's glass-is-3/4-empty outlook, we can all agree that it should (and can) be in better shape than it is now. It's not looking through rose-colored glasses to want it to be better. It IS if the expectations and time frames are unrealistic and the ultimate goal is 'perfection'. Like I said, if something of value (Main St.) is left alone with no maintenance or governance, then it will (and has) turn into what it's become; a mere shell of its former self and the location of some of the worst elements of society.

I don't have the perfect solution. But it sounds like everyone has given up...and that guarantees that nothing will ever change. I don't expect everyone will stand hand-in-hand and sing kumbaya while the buildings magically transform with sparkles and rainbows, and harp music in the background. But if the village has zoning laws and code ordinances in place, then they need to be upheld and enforced.

Anything of this magnitude seems insurmountable given everything going against it. But nothing is impossible. If everyone is resigned to not caring about their own town (or Main St.), then why should anyone outside of the area care?(e.g. people looking to invest). And I think addressing the Main St. problem (and maybe to a greater degree, Herkimer in general) is a worthy cause to get behind...especially for those that live there!

It cost nothing in effort or time to let things go to hell (see the last 20 years or so). But then it requires a LOT of time and a LOT of effort to fix it back up. And putting pressure of the local government to start 'giving a crap', getting the residents to at least be open to positive changes in attitude, needs to be done to accomplish that WHILE the lipstick is being applied to the pig.

Lowes on the east end of town and Wal mart on the west end of town was the straw that broke the camels back, as far as any hope of reviving Herkimer ! How many small locally owned stores did they put out of business ? But the politicians give these stores huge tax breaks to come here. Why ?? The small locally owned stores can't compete with them when the big stores don't have to worry about paying taxes like the small stores that made Herkimer to begin with.
To a degree, I agree. But the saga continues after that...:-)

They originally came to the area because they saw $$$. If every other business gets shut down by a big-box store, then those former business owners (and their employees) are stuck getting jobs at these very same box stores that forced their closures (usually at lower wages). And soon thereafter, fewer people can afford to shop at the big-box store because wages overall have fallen. So then the big-box store soon has a self-induced dilemma on their hands...'dwindling sales'.

But they solve that simply by laying everyone off, closing the store, and move on to another town that's on the economic ropes waiting for the proverbial knockout punch to THAT area. The end result?...a decimated local economy devoid of ANY small businesses of substance, a local government that put all its tax revenue eggs into one or two 'big-box' baskets, and the few remaining residents who aren't in nursing homes or on 'assistance' fighting for the few remaining minimum wage jobs left at the convenience stores, tattoo parlors, or McD's.

...And they all lived happily ever-after! The End.

And who's fault is it for letting Main Street fester into what it is now? Lax leadership in the Village.
Its the landlords faults. They rent to all the section 8 and welfare people. If they could just stop renting to these people that make the streets unsafe and trashy looking there wouldn't be a problem like there is now. Also no need for college kids on main st. have the college build more dorms if they need them. These are the people defacing the properties on and around main st. come on landlords take a stand here and quit being so money hungry. Help the community while there still is one to save.

Totally disagree: The college has been here since the 1960's or early 70's. College kids brought some revenue in. Then the big store came to town along with certain slum lords particularly on Main Street, King Street and Prospect Street. Been down hill since.
