You can get all the codes enforcement you want....would not make a bit of difference. Empty buildings are empty buildings regardless of the code and how many millions of little rules you may have.
Business has to be confident that they can make money in that location. Making money means making traffic. The flow of traffic in Herkimer revolves around Rte 5, not Main St. So I am investing in what ?
The buildings that are empty are mostly next to buildings that house folks that don't care about their living conditions. Codes enforcement needs to clean those buildings up and businesses other than head shops and tattoo shops will want to come back to a quaint main street setting. If you doubt it, question some of the remaining business what they feel about their neighbors.
If you happen to meet one of our village justices in a store, ask them how many codes violations have come before them in court. I bet the number is zero.

Didn't realize Sangertown had all local small shops in there...I am now going to go there instead of the atmosphere of Clinton.

As far as Saratoga..they will next be the ones to suffer as they already are starting to show signs on smaller, scummy shops on the main drag.

Herkimer Main street is a lost cause and the money spent was money utterly wasted for a report that will do nothing.

mains streets best hope is to demolish the whole street and sell vacant lots for homes.

How does Herkimer like the collections of the meters now ???

Anyone check out the sex offender registry lately? Half of the ones in Herkimer live on Main St. Was this in the report?

First step is to exterminate the blacks and allow no more in the village. Second step do the same to all the Main St residents and other welfare trash in herkimer. Third move the county buildings out of Herkimer.

the Village is the County Seat and very doubtful you'll convince the Legislators to move.

While you're at it, why not eliminate HCCC? Wouldn't you believe, based on your position, Trescott, that much of the "black" problem comes from the college and its colorful students?

You know all too well that I am not confused, I caught a troll while the troll was spreading his ignorance. If you would back off on your know it all attitude you would not be so irritating. You do NOT know it all and you are a fool to think the Democrats are the party that will save the hole Obama has put us in.

I heard a great idea one day and it should be looked at. Tear down all buildings between the Folts Home and post office. ALL OF THEM! Maybe leave the diner, police and fire stations.

Put up outlet mall stores. That would get people into Herkimer. One story, nice looking biuldings with NO APPARTMENTS!

That would be progress. WALMART and LOWES do fine. Other name brand store outlets would follow.

This is the very definition of a 'self-fulfilling prophecy'. Negative people saying negative comments which produces negative results which creates negative people. All the name-calling and intelligence-slamming tells me that you find no greater pleasure than trolling for things to disturb with your narrow-minded opinions.
Main Street fell because consumers found malls and shopping centers more attractive than individual shops. And that was because the prices were lower due to bulk purchasing from the manufacturers. And price became an issue because industry was, is, and will probably continue to pull out of NY like rats abandoning a sinking ship. When the leading employer of an area is Walmart, and the next biggest is a convenient store, there's a HUGE economic problem. Decent jobs generally means decent people. Low wage jobs often breeds government-dependent individuals who work harder at 'not' working than actually working.
Do your part to improve your neck of the woods...where ever that is. Vote these piss-poor excuses for politicians out of office. Can't hurt. At least with the next person, you have a 50/50 shot at them doing something constructive. Help your neighbor out once in a while. Get off your collective asses and stop whining about how everything sucks and that it'll never get any better. I 100% guarantee you that if the pissing and moaning continues, then nothing will ever change. Try finding solutions (and acting on them where possible) to the problems instead of insisting on being the "I-told-you-so" person. NO ONE likes that person. If you're so knowledgeable on what won't work...then feel free to let everyone know what 'will' work...and act on it. We're a nation of people bred into a world of convenience. And with convenience comes laziness.
Do everything in your part to enhance your village, to make it presentable to potential investors/businesses/industry/ new residents and the problem will be well on its way of taking care of itself. Start by not expecting the village to do everything for you. It's YOUR village, YOU live there. If you don't like trash blowing around on the ground, pick it up. Doing that means getting a little exercise, and is cheaper than getting a gym membership...something many of us could use. Does your trim need some paint?...PAINT IT! Don't get into the "Why bother, the neighborhood is going to hell anyway" attitude. Put pressure on your elected officials. They are your neighbors. They need to see that you care and that you're not going to be complacent. No one else is going to live your life for you. The US Constitution does not start with "We The Sheeple..."
I am a former Herkimer resident so I have a basis for my opinion because I saw what Herkimer 'used' to look like. And if you find offense in what I've said, than you're the very person who this is directed at. Prove me wrong.
