Cut, Cut, Cut is not going to solve our problem. Yes, an open discussion on payroll and benefits for administrators and teachers should be considered but it is not going to solve everything. Do we need an assistant superintendent and vice principles at each school in our district. Many districts get by without them so this should be on the table. I am not saying they are not necessary but it needs to be on the table for consideration. Pay to play should also be on the table. Many schools have had to take this route we should consider it. I don't want to hear it excludes low income families. There are already school programs for low income families that exclude middle and upper income families. Tough luck not everyone is entitled to everything. Long term, until we address the lack of revenue (tax dollars) the rest is only going to make a small dent. All three communities have a problem with revenue and taking a state handout of $59MM was a short term solution. Herkimer has numerous businesses and should be capable of supporting a school district. We need a collective solution that includes revenue generation, everyone pays a share, not just 50% of the citizens. Rather than increase taxes on 50% of the properties it is time we go after the tax free or under paying properties. All three school districts should be asking themselves "How do we get 50% of the properties to pay their share of taxes." I don't know but don't tell me it can't be done without at least trying.
I agree with all except the point of how many administrators we are going to need. Have you read anything about the new state required evaluation system? Guess what: You're going to need MORE administrators, not less, to keep that baby going.

I do not know the details but uunderstand it is costly and time consuming. I believe someone told me cost is high and state does not $ help. The state has an agenda to reduce the number of school districts. JOIN US or suffer consequences. It is not going to be easy but we need to fight together. Thank u

the yes votes can sit back and laugh. after all the lies that were put out there, the herkimer people get what they deserve. they knew what the outcome would be. lets see how high the taxes will have to go up. if sports were the reason, shame on you. we have nothing but average kids in sports here. now maybe the yes votes can control the new budget if it goes over 2%. and maybe we can cut some of these nfl sports teams. yes voters we still can contrl our tax and educational cuts. let this play out.

Tutty knows Herkimer is screwed. Half of Herkimer hasn't figured it out yet.

Have the dks that stood in front of the school with the kids come up with the answers.

Thirty something posts later and has anyone contacted Tutty to try to arrange a new meeting to get this ball rolling? Does anyone who knows who is representing the community if anyone? I would love to step up and talk with him but God freaking forbid I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes and get my throat slit because I actually want to do something for this school district. Everyone is all talk on here and absolutely nothing is getting done this is ridiculous and for those of you say that you already had meetings and voiced your opinions, this is something different. We know where we stand now that the merge was voted down so we need to start with a clean slate and try and help fix this mess.
There are so many issues that need to be addressed and if we all put our ideas together maybe we can salvage our district?
Everything has to be laid out to how exactly the money is being spent and where we can start cutting. How many teachers have one foot out the door to retirement? If you’re a teacher and you want to do what’s best for the kids then why don’t you stop being greedy and leave already? People have to stop worrying about their chronies and who they want to protect and not cut because of hard feelings. That’s crazy.
How many people do we need to do one job? Do we need a Deputy Superintendent and a Business Manager to assist the Superintendent? Why can’t the Deputy Super take over if Tutty truly wants out? Why do we need a Student Activities Director? The kid’s coaches and teachers should deal with each other directly when it comes to approving their eligibility to play sports. Do we really need a Vice Principal for both schools? These are all things that need to be addressed. Being that this district is in such dire straits, there is no need for a middle man.
Another idea is how about keeping track of how many hours are actually being used to do something productive like teach or run the school? Can the planning periods be used to teach those extra classes that are desperately needed? Can’t the teachers sacrifice that extra time they are given during school hours and do their planning at home?

What exactly is a Mentor and why do they get paid $1200.00? Why can’t we at least temporarily cut the salaries that range from $1800.00 to $3300.00 for Winter Interscholastic Coaches? Why are we paying $45 per hour(on an as needed basis)for a Clerk of the Works for Phase II of Capital project??? That doesn't even include the Architect's pay! What is the Works for Phase I and now Phase II of the Capital Project? If it is to beautify the schools well I think we are more than up to par as of now and I think that should all cease and monies should be allotted for the classes that are needed for our kids. I know everyone says these little incidentals don’t really matter, but they do. They all add up eventually.

I’m not on here to bash anyone by no means I just want our kids to have a great future in a good community. It’s not like we live in a 3rd world country so what the heck are we doing here and what is the problem??? Get over the misappropriated funds already. Let’s move on and get through this.

I have so much more to say but I'm thinking no one will listen anyway and it'll all be a big waste of time. Terrible, just terrible.

The administators are needed to carry out the state mandated evaluations. All extracurricular salaries are literally a drop in the bucket. In what other profession are you "required" to do your prep work at home? Does a doctor get briefed about patients at home? And anyway, I do not know of a single teacher that is not ALREADY putting in hours at home. And finally, capital project funds are non-transferrable. The state is extremely specific about what it can and cannot be used for. I am not trying to discourage good ideas, but there are many cases in which the districts hands are simply tied.

Well in this case I think since we are at the end of our rope the BOE or whoever needs to speak to someone about the non-transferrable funds and make an exception to the rule. We are dying here and something needs to be done. I know the teachers are putting in hours at home and at times I know the community doesn't appreciate them as much as they should, but think about it if they want to keep their jobs and do right by the kids couldn't they at least sacrifice for couple of years and take on those much needed classes for the kids? Or do anything as a matter of fact. Even a slight pay cut across the board for everyone would help. What good is the state mandated evaluations if the whole district falls apart? How are other schools surviving? Better yet how have other school districts dug themselves out of a hole? There has to be other avenues to go with this. All those "drop in the buckets" add up. I just mentioned that one specific area to make a point. Our district needs to fight to get their hands untied. Thank you for being so civil in this discussion with me. I really appreciate it. It's nice to know that there are decent people out there.

Not enough to bridge a million+ dollar deficit. Make cuts to teachers that already make some of the lowest numbers in the state and you're going to watch the academics continue to go down the toilet.

People have also thrown around the idea of pay to play or pay for classes. A school district in Ohio that I read about tried that. You think every family has an extra $4000 hanging around to pay for sports and beyond mandated classes?

I hope you realize there's a much, much deeper issue than that. Sometimes do unions take things a bit too far, yes, but that still doesn't address the issue that these are people with master's degrees who deserve fair compensation. There are people with lesser degrees that start at a higher rate of pay than many of the teachers make after a decade of teaching. And really, it's more than many people in the valley make, but teacher salaries are not that high and money in the middle-middle class does not stretch that far.

Instead of ragging on teachers why are you not crying from the rooftops about how overpaid our politicians are? And they don't even do a quarter of the work that teachers do. Set your sights on the right target.
