By then they will have a high school program. If that does not happen I will send her to a private school in Louisville. You can keep your child in scott county system if that works for you but dont hold my child back because you refuse to accept a great opportunity for our community. Respect my opion and I respect yours.
So move, who cares, Your daughter is no better than other peoples kids and neither are you!!!

The charter school is coming, they will get the land and the grants and your tax money so you might as well accept it. The kids and parents will have a choice of where to go to school, and its their choice, so if you want to go to SHS you can and if you want to go to the charter school you can do that, as long as you meet the standards set forth by the charter no big deal, as for not wanting your tax money to go there, it would be good to wipe out all the school taxes that are paid by people who don't have kids in school, why should others have to pay for your kids to go to school.

Hey, why you're at it oh great tax cutter, why not quit paying taxes for Social Security if you're not over 65. And just so you know, if they go to SHS, they can't choose the Charter School.. The Charter School isn't for kids that age. Although you did get something right. Yes, they set standards for kids to get in. Yes, that means they will select their kids, And Yes, that means on the outside, it will appear to be a "Public" school, but in reality, it's private while spending my tax dollars. But hey, thanks for getting on here and wasting 3 minutes of my life to respond to your nonsense. Happy New Year!!!

Who's going to be principal keeps changing, everyone keeps bailing out, so as of tonight, not for sure.
They don't have a place to have it yet either, but want to be up and running by August. Big mess and no leadership!! But hey, so many want to send their kids there. They know it will be great. Don't see how great it can be when they don't even have walls yet and know who's going to be running it. Unreal!!!!!

At least hopefully someday I may get something out of paying in to my Social Security, and they will start out with the lower grades and then add the upper levels, its for the kids who want to excell and have a school where they can keep the dead beat kids who don't want to learn out. So your tax dollars are going to fund it because it is coming, so I am glad you are going to be paying higher taxes for other kids to go to a private school, pretty cool how they are going to get a nice new school and your paying for it lol, I guess if you have kids their not going to go to the charter school?

Just for the record, there was over a handful of things on the application that was misleading, false or didn't exist, yet Tony Bennett still approved it earlier this year. So don't be fooled by the state still wanting to do things. The state has dug themselves a hole with this school. Lucky us as tax payers!!!!
I've been watching this mess and ignorance go on for too long now. All the nay sayers on this worthless Topix need to educate themselves before spouting off lies and ignorance. If you want to know the truth about THIS charter school for Scott County then contact those board members and other parents who support it and get the truth. There is nothing to hide, it's all public information as this charter school is a PUBLIC SCHOOL ran by a NOT FOR PROFIT board who CANNOT pick and choose the students. AND, no, it is not a dead issue. The members and supporters of Via who know the truth and don't surrender to ignorance care too much about their community to give up. Educate yourself on facts.

People please get the facts. The National Assessment Governing board released an analysis of Charter Schools performance.
1. Charter school students scored lower than students in traditional schools.
2. Students taught by uncertified teachers in many Charter Schools were significantly lower.
3.Accccountability is lacking in oversight for federal Charter School programs.
4. Charter schools segregate students along racial and class lines and they also fail to adequately serve students with disabilities.
5. These schools are for a profit.
If you want to send your child to a Charter school then you should have to pay for it. Tax dollars should go to public schools. If we continue down this path, then our country will be telling citizens who can get an education and who can't.
Why not put the money into public schools and make them better.
Perhaps if you'd stop making it about the adults & the system - INSTEAD make it about the kids! Terry Amick said it last night, he doesn't want the charter because of what it will do with Scott2. Umm, what about what it might do for the kids who learn differently? Not say'n anything against the teachers, just say'n some kids learn differently - so let 'em with the tax dollars that are ALREADY being taken out.
Why not tap into another investment resource that won't cost anymore??

And... here's another study from the Indiana DOE about what happens when a charter opens:
Most districts implemented new educational programs, made changes in educational structures in district schools, and/or created new schools with programs that were similar to those in the local charter schools.

at this time there is no incentive for the district to change - enuf kids are getting by, so why bother

Why did the charter school re-zoning get denied? Just heard that is was "good news" that it is denied..dont' understand that as all parents need a choice for thier kids. Hopefully someone in this community that can afford it will donate property and or a building so this can happen.
Is a fear problem. Looking for courage in Scottsburg

And if the report is accurate that 400 students failed the istep in reading and math it looks like we need a new school. And for Terry Amick spouting off he is one the biggest liars to ever be elected in Scott County, look around and see there are new factories or jobs in Scottsburg, and thank Terry and the rest of the board, they have kept Scottsburg poor by keeping jobs out, don't let them deny are kids of a good education, build the charter school.

Love hearing the pro-VIA comments. Love hearing how they don't pick their students, but they won't provide transportation so that will limit the students they'll get. Love hearing about the leadership of VIA even though several of the leaders have backed out or run off. Love how none of the VIA supporters seem to care that an entire community will LOSE ITS SCHOOL if VIA opens and that the economically disadvantaged students of that community will not have a chance to attend VIA. VIA supporters seem quick to insult and belittle the teachers of this county. They talk about educators doing underhanded things when their original leader had to be removed because of some of the things he was doing...and then turned tail and ran when things go tough. This is what we need? People who yell at meetings, make fun of others, refuse to provide transportation to help the poor of this community. Yep, love the VIA school.

The Charter Schools do not cherry pick there students, any student can go to the charter school. It is not a private school, and if it the charter schools do not keep their test scores up they get closed, there is more accountability with a charter school. There are no income guidelines on a charter school low income or high income they can both go to the charter school, It's hard to understand why everyone is so afraid of a charter school, perhaps if you would look into the facts on what a charter school is instead of just heresay it would help, it just gives parents and kids a choice, basically that's all it does if you prefer not to send your child to a charter school then by all means that is your right, but don't take away the rights of others who are concerned and want what's best for their children.

In your own words, you said it: "and if it the charter schools do not keep their test scores up they get closed". You really think they are going to allow kids into their school that has low test scores, on poverty with bad attendance and parents who won't help (THE EXACT THING PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAVE TO FIGHT EVERYDAY, BUT SOMEHOW HAS TO KEEP IMPROVING WITH WHAT THEY HAVE). Those kids will be removed from the charter school and only the richest, brightest and most giving to their cause will remain!

Tony Bennett brought the chater schools to Indiana because he was getting funding from Florida for his campaign. You need to look at all the Charter schools that have failed. Read the guidelines for VIA, the parents have to provide transportation, volunteer ten hours per week, and their board is appointed. It will divide our county even more than it is now. If Charter schools are so great why can't public schools go by the same rules?

Because public schools is for the have nots that cant cut it and pull the rest of the kids down. Parents that want to be involved have better results raising kids. Proven fact
