Also great food for super-cheap in Hyde Park is Maravillas in Harper Court. The appearance is a little off-putting so I was kind of afraid to try it for the first year and a half I lived in HP, but boy oh boy is it good. And ridiculously cheap! DO NOT MISS THE TAMALES. They aren't just reheated Tom-Toms like you get at other places, but are handmade and full of chicken-y masa-y goodness. Really fantastic eats, a true hidden gem.

When I was a student at the U. of C. in the late '80s, Ribs & Bibs in Hyde Park was always a great alternative to Harold's Fried Chicken on Saturday evening; I remember all too well scraping $8 together with two or three other guys and getting the "Belly Buster" chicken bucket, truly a feast for starving college students. Like this article's author, though, I couldn't afford the ribs.(Here's truly the cheapest way to get cheap food in Hyde Park: go to the university department receptions, make some important-sounding small talk with the academics (e.g., "So, are you fully funded for next year?"), take a sandwich and leave.)
