Why didn't you make them tough enough when you made them. Handguns are completely banned in Chicago; can you make that law any tougher ? "Maybe you could ban them again."

Chicago bans handguns, laser sights, fragmenting bullets and concealed knives with a blade longer than 2.5 inches.

8-20-040 Registration of firearms.
(a) All FIREARMS in the City of Chicago shall be registered in accordance...

(b) This section shall not apply to:
(5) Any nonresident of the City of Chicago participating in any lawful recreational firearm related activity in the city, or on his way to or from such activity in another jurisdiction provided that such weapon shall be unloaded 'and securely wrapped'...

Trust no person law: firearms must be broken down into a nonfunctioning state. All kinds of ammo are prohibited in Chicago.

Better wait until January when the coast is clear. If it is like any thing to do with race we'll have to extinguish the fires first.

Chicago is full of corrpution, has high crime, bad schools, sky high taxes, etc. It has been run by Democrats for the past 40 years, who by definition are suppose to improve the lives of the unfortunate, instead the socialist policies of the Democrats have fostered a culture of dependency on government handouts and turned those communities into economic and social wastelands.

Human beings, residents of the Chicagoland area have died. The loss of life should always be sacrosanct. The murders are deplorable, the figures are staggering, but the unequivocal responses on this forum stating that the shooters are animals, low-lives, etc., does nothing to solve the problem and potentially does more to exacerbate the problem by announcing a lack of compassion or sympathy for those affected -- and we are all affected. When you write off the shooter and the victim, you are writing off the very people who live in the neighborhood who are haunted by a vicious and inexplicable violence on an increasingly increased scale.

Even if you were to buy into the numbers that 100% of the gun violence crimes are caused by blacks and latinos, that does not mean that 100% of blacks and latinos support and engage in gun violence. If 5 men out of 1000 go on a shooting spree, why should 995 men be blamed, scapegoated or stereotyped?

The events in their simplest form occur as such: there is a conflict between Person A and Person B. Should a conflict, no matter how severe or benign, be resolved with violence (lethal or otherwise)?

The tougher gun laws are designed to accomplish a reduction of gun violence by increasing deterrence and reducing the ease at which one can acquire a gun. So far, many of you are suggesting that the deterrent component of tougher gun laws is not successful.

Before writing off the demand for tougher gun laws because of failed deterrence, consider the other component of the laws -- namely reducing access. How easy is it to acquire a gun? How easy is it to track a gun or bullet? If a significant portion of the guns/bullets were discovered to follow a similar path from origin to the shooters, would that provide attention to a specific area where attention if not regulation should be applied?

Killing other people is wrong -- we should never stand by and claim it is what it is. By writing off the shooters as not worth our time or attention, we further distance ourselves from the calamity, and estrange the very group that desperately needs a manner to put an end to this.

The decision to address (and ultimately not resolve) conflicts via guns is a growing issue stigmatized by race but certainly not bound by it. The school shootings across the country are evidence of this.

Gun laws, like any other laws, have a limited effect. But we are not powerless, as a body politic sans a law, to accurately identify and resolve the fundamental problem: somewhere along the line, the shooter (in many but not all cases) has come to the conclusion that another human being must be shot and or killed for an action or inaction of his/her doing or for no reason at all.

Divining the source of message (which we cannot yet claim natural directive), understanding the context by which the message is delivered, believed and applied, and subsequently disspelling the mesage or rewiring, should be our ultimate objective as human beings. The government is a mass of people like a corporation is. If the government or corporation fails -- people regroup and reorganize and pursue a common purpose again. Our common purpose: stop the violence, live long and prosper, etc.

(Obviously, there is tension between this ideal and the ideal of self-determination but I believe we have spoken out on tangentially related pursuits by stating suicide and murder are forbidden unless sanctioned by the state.)
