Looks like City Council will disband the mounted patrol. One hold out who wants more information. Looks like a done deal, horses to Lollypop Farm.

Now dump the Monroe County Sheriff Mounted Patrol.

the first time there's a riot at Charlotte (RibFest) or something BAD happens at Brown Square (rap concert), all you whiners will just say it was someone else's fault anyway.
You're entertaining folk, but most of you talk s**t all day and don't even know your diaper is full.
to not have any portion of the mounted detail patrolling is criminally incompetent. the powers that be should cut corners in another area.
we'll see, the heat of summer is coming and the economy is still in the crapper; when the benefits get trimmed, you might want tanks instaed of ponies anyway...(see--> Rochester NY riot news from the 60's)(it doesn't take much to fire up idiots)

Call me selfish, but I doubt I will ever be attending the Charlotte RibFest or a rap concert - or tossing malatov cocktails to protest the government - so it's out to pasture and off the tax roll for the horses, in my opinion.

Plus, when the economic rioters start tossing rocks and bottles, the mounted cops are vulnerable to injury. Not the case in a nice new Dodge Charger.

Unless they can hang a lightbar on the horses, it's time to go.

Let's take a look at this from another perspective; PRIDE.
How about this:
1) with all the horses (beautiful I might add) available for this, why WOULDN'T we have a combined stream-lined county/city operation?
2) use them not only for crowd control and educational opportunities with kids, how about multi-use? charge Wayne County to peruse their back-40 for weed and unruly migrants. Those horses can go places that NO 4 wheeler can go...
3) flaunt the fact that we have them. dress those ponies up in full dress regalia; take them to EVERY fire dept carnival, church festival and county functions. expose the public to them. expose them to the public. take PRIDE in them. they are cool as hell.
seeing them outside an Amerk game, walking through the parking lots at Rhino Stadium, walking near the bridge at the U of R,
clip-clopping down Mt. Hope near Ford Street, showing up at Freddie Thomas Learning Center on Scio, the Public Market every Saturday; deterrent maybe?...c'mon people use your head for this, we already have them in place. If we lose them, it's damn near impossible to get them back and we'll all be saying, "How did we let this get away from us?"
4) Christmas time, put some REAL bells and leather on these guys, it would be awesome to somehow rejuvenate the way people perceive downtown and the RPD/MC horses.

Peace, out.

Sure, makes sense. Budgets are spiraling out of control - but we should increase the use of horses at more events (costing more dollars) for pride? Strongly disagree.

The mayor said it best... the horse patrol consumes over $1 million in salaries - that could be allocated for other things. The Chief was by his side nodding his head in agreement.

Sorry, I'm unconvinced. And horses are kind of scary.

your Equinophobia aside, how about what those same officers are going to cost back on the streets?
they still get paid.
now, we have to buy cars for those same officers, they come without any striping, decals, cages, radio equipment, laptops, safety gear, weapons etc...
their benefit package and their salaries would still be the same.
are you REALLY trying to tell me that the cost of the pnies being cared for, in a parking garage/county owned property cost 1 million dollars for food and vet upkeep?
I say BULLSHIP...

Hey, hold on there. Don't shoot the messenger. The mayor, featured on Chan 8 in high def, made that statement. I believe what our government tells us, they do know best. Who am I to argue with the mayor and his obedient police chief. I'm just parroting his take. I infrequently have my own opinions about these weighty matters.

what kind of F*KN MORONS are running the D&C?
THIS is the poll they actually put online for their "scientific" research into what people have an opinion of...where the hell is Frank Cardon?
these guys aren't even as funny as Caprice; nor, as philosophical as Darrel...pitiful. no wonder printed media is dead. keep hiring the cheapest you can Gannett...soon you'll have your H.Q. in Mexico City.

I'm still STUNNED that they are THIS flippant and lacksadaisical about this.
It shows that their formality and professionalism is GONE.

What should the city do about its mounted police patrol unit?

1)Scrap it and spend the money on other patrols. 2)Keep the horses and cut back on homicide or drug investigations.
3)Institute a special horse tax to pay for it.
4)Outsource mounted patrol services to the Canadian Mounties

Hey D&C:

seriously?
THIS is your professional poll?
THIS is how a formal question is asked by the ONLY paper in town?
you should be ashamed. YOUR LACK OF TALENT IS ONLY PREDICATED BY YOUR FLIPPANT USE OF THIS MEDIUM.
Frank Gannett would be APPALLED.

Mounted police are not as valuable as you think.

With the budget woes we have in NY, I for one would love to see MORE cuts.
If you are so headstrong about saving the Mounted Police, make a donation towards the cause.

Volunteering other people's money for the benifit of the masses is usually a charactoristic of aDemocrat.

This time I'm on your side. Talk about weighted questions. The D&C is beyond redemption, I think they're just having fun before they call it quits. There is no journalism, all the real reporters are long gone.

Clearly they have no interest in encouraging the retention of the mounted unit. Shoddy journalism. Not amusing. While I think it is a waste of money, it should be a majority that decides if the mounted patrol should continue. Loading the poll (if anybody contributes) will result in a conclusion they are going for.
