Does it seem to you that Sumner County is digressing rather than progressing where bullying is concerned?

Have you lost your mind. If anything, Sumner Co is working to stop all of the bullying. Kudos to them...especially Hawkins Middle School.

Do some research 1st before you post.

No. I haven't lost my mind. Have you seen the reports that are appearing on every local news channel over the last week or so concerning bullying in Sumner County Schools? I would suggest that you go look them up, and then explain to me what Sumner County is doing to stop the bullying.

My daughter experienced bullying in a different county in Tn. Short of sitting on the principles desk, and contacting the State Department, they my daughters school were not proactive. It only placed the emphasis on the victim. Find your gonads admin and protect our kids. The squeaky wheel gets the attention. Raise cain about it, if the schools won't be the advocate parents need to. What we have is moral breakdown of society!

I've met the child and the family of that child they are reporting about. I allowed my son to play with him for about an hour and my son reported to me that the child was bullying him. He threatened to hurt, shoot and kill him. I never said anything to the mother, I just simply didn't let my child play with him again. This child may be instigating the problem or keeping it going and then convincing his parents that he is being bullied.

I'm not saying that Sumner County doesn't have a bullying problem, but there is an appropriate way to handle the situation. My own child has dealt with bullying, and when I contacted the school they handled the situation.

If I were in your shoes, I would make a call to this mom and let her know all of this. If those issues exist, she needs to know.

Gotta say, that thought crossed my mind, too. But the kid was assaulted, at the least. Why was nothing done to the kid who allegedly assaulted him?

I tried to be a friend to the mom. She seemed like she needed one. I think she is in need of a friend because she and her husband have suffered some losses, and have struggled through some heartbreak, but she seems to push away those who would be a true friend to her. I can relate because in the past I've done the same, but from personal experience I know that sometimes when another isn't receptive you just have to walk away and allow them to figure things out on their own.

Bullying is aweful in all middle schools. This case is particularly bad. It appears that the little boy is having problems fitting in, since he was bullied at two separate schools. Maybe homeschooling is a good idea for him, and some counseling, too. He's probably traumatized, and a good counselor can help him build his self-esteem. Kids who are bullied often suffer from low self-esteem which can make them an easy target.

You are so right. I see help being needed on both sides. Counseling would probably benefit this child and his entire family. On the other hand, everything I have read points to an out and out assault which has resulted in NO punishment for the kid who did it. What's up with that? I don't care if the victim DID say something to the kid.

That's true. If the school system could prove it, there should have been some punishment for the other kid. The fact is that very few parents teach thier kids that violence is wrong and anything goes at home. The school system can put as many safeguards in place as they want, but these kids will inevitably fight anyway. Those of us who don't condone this type of behavior have to help our kids build the confidence to handle bullies, in a way that will keep a fight from escalating. There is no magic ball that will tell the school administration which kid is going to come to school and hurt another student on a given day.

You can't blame the whole county for 1 mistake at 1 school. That's just crazy. When my son attended Hawkins Middle School every avenue was taken to decrease or terminate the bullying.

Granted bullying is terrible and the principal should take correct action against the child and stand ground with the parents.

Nonetheless, you can't blame the whole county. Thats why I said, Have you lost your mind !!!! Duh.....

If it were one mistake at one school, I'd agree. Do some research. Specifically, look into issues in all of Portland's schools, and as proven with recent events, several schools in Gallatin. Did you know a bullied Portland student attempted suicide last year, and succeeded? Yes...I said succeeded. I dare you to ask Alex's family what was done to help him. Did you know there is a bullied middle school student from Gallatin who is currently hospitalized due to a suicide attempt? In these situations, every avenue is NOT being taken to decrease or eliminate the bullying. Hats off to Hawkins reaction to your bullying situation...consider yourself blessed.

My next door neighbor's children go to Shafer Middle School where the latest incident allegedly occurred and two of their children witnessed the even and say that the child in question WAS NOT bullied! According to these two girls the young man fell down while playing football outside and suffered the bloody nose and bruised face. These same two young girls who I know are NOT bullies say that the alleged victim is in fact a bully himself and struck a young girl in the face with a bottle that was being used as part of an art project! As far as the first incident that occurred at Rucker -Stewart, the police and court system got involved and the bully was punished and forced to leave Sumner County schools.........my question now is since the police readily got involved in the first case and prosecuted that child, and the same police department again looked into this case but left it to the school to handle, there must have been something that the officers found that made them not want to get involved and prosecute this alleged bully. I wonder what that information was that made them leave it to the school? Perhaps this is all a lie as the young girls told me that the kid fell down and was NOT bullied!

If that is the case, then I think with all the media coverage this particular incident has received the local PD AND the school system should make a public statement to that fact. With that said, the bullying situation among our children is so much bigger than this one case.

Let's be nice. And let's look at the big picture. So many families are coming forward with horror stories. What can we as a community do to put a stop to it?
