Group dogs council for chain law ( )
Animal lovers campaign to unseat leaders in city not sympathetic toward their cause
By EMILY WEAVER -Times-News Staff Writer
A website has become the new battleground in a figurative dogfight that has been brewing in Hendersonville for years.
Animal rights advocates, who created the Off the Chain campaign in 2010 with the goal of freeing dogs from continuous tethering in Hendersonville, started a new mission March 18 with . With the new site, the group hopes to fill three City Council seats this November with more like-minded candidates to hear their cause.
Valerie Lamoreux and Beth Nave began a crusade to change animal cruelty ordinances in Henderson County in 2008 after a dog tethered to a dog house on Yon Hill Road caught their attention. With a suggested ordinance in hand, they went first to Henderson County commissioners and then to the county’s Animal Advisory Board before heading to Hendersonville City Council.
Their ordinance addressed a number of concerns, ranging from dogs being chained, abused and neglected to dogs caught in homes with domestic violence. Not seeing much hope for the changes in the county, they decided to start with the city and pared down their recommendations to one main focus: banning the chaining of dogs.
“We kind of shifted our focus (on) going out to help the dogs,” Lamoreux said,“and we became aware that that’s not going to work without laws backing us and supporting us.” The Yon Hill dog died a few years ago, she said.
The group launched a Facebook page (now supported by 1,700 followers) with the hopes of eliminating the practice of tying up dogs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The page is filled with dozens of photos of dogs they’ve seen tethered in the county.
