instead of buildint the park and saving a magnolia tree money should have been spent on this project and could have been built on the site where the park to no where is being built

You live in Durham so why do you care what asheville is doing. Stay in Durham and enjoy the air and traffic. Adding 6 stories to an 80 year old building is going to be expensive. Im sure you think you can do it cheaper because you smoked your way through a woodshop class in high school.

"...but interior structural columns make that impossible, Assistant County Manager Jon Creighton said."

Has this person never been in a large room with interior structural columns"?

Here comes the drum beat for the Buncombe County Clownpaw Commissioners to pilfer taxpayer $$$ and give them to their ol' buddies for the Great BSM Bailout. The spin machine is humming up into high gear.

That article is just a warning that we are going to be gouged again. More taxes, more luxury for "them".

We have all Democrat commissioners now so finding the money will be no problem...they will just suck the life some more out of the taxpayers. Remember too that we have Holly Jones now who is experienced in and has no qualms about vacuuming out the taxpayer pockets.

If they need more room, hold court on the streets. Or another place that has the room. Get ready for our taxes to go up. Instead of improving the way of life for us they sit around figuring out how to gouge the public.

I would think that Mr Moore could squeeze a couple of ADAs into the space vacated by Rodney Hasty ..... or maybe he could sub-divide his own office for use by others in the department (his is quite large).

Another GREAT example of the "leaders" of this County (and Ciy) and their complete failure at planning for the future of citizens of the area.

Buncombe/Asheville is the center of activity in the Western end of the state .... looks like we need some stimulating!

the court house just need to deal with their situation until the economy gets better. Screw the 25 million extra elevator, get a waiver for petes sake. wasted money, again. And please, don't start getting repeated studies - stop wasting OUR money. What about the fed courthouse, do they have any extra room they can spare for a while?

But how is that going to bail out the Biltmore Square Mall 8?

Their is no easy solution. Some of the court rooms could be divided for 2 courts. Course the judges don't want that. Too Tacky I guess.

The addition to the ct. house is the pratical way to go with an under ground parkin to protect the judges. All the building don't need to be done at once, do it as you get the money to get it. Like sone one else said the money for the green park addition at Amboy road could be put on hold, better yet it could and should be stopped. The $600,000.00 + money they got for that will help with the court house expense. Put Ron Moore's office in a closet somewhere. And use his place for a small claims court. Their are all kinds of alternatives if they will just look for them, but no they want a McMansion court house. I do too. But money just don't exist. So you will need (in my opinion) just need to deal with what you got. It's the damn lawyer's that are tyin up the courts not the judges. Maybe their needs to be some restrictions for them to go by. I quit, What the hell do I know?

Bumcombe county should buy and move the county offices, court functions, and other county related activities to Biltmore Squate Mall.
Of course there will be expenses but there will be more in the long run if they stay where they are.

Instead of the piddly court house annex. Lets take the DSS building because their people obviously want to move. Move them to Innsbruck and then take the old DSS building and remodel and expand it to accomodate the offices and court rooms. The remodel should cost less than some major overhaul of a structure whose shape is set in place.

They should limit the courtroom space for ONLY those who have business there (the criminally accused)- I have been down there at time when whole families are present to watch daddy get convicted of a DWI .... why bring 5-10 people (including children), to the courthouse.

Then there is the 24 hour a day 365 possibility ... that way the could squeeze 3 days of proceedings into one day.

Or what about Saturdays - is court held on Saturday here?

Not to mention the associated costs of transporting the folks from the jail downtown out to the Biltmore Square site (and there would have to be secured areas for the accused to be served lunch since it wouldn't be cost effective to drive them back downtown to the jail for lunch....

Then there is the increased ridership on the buses that service that area and perhaps an increase in the number of routes to handle getting folks expeditiously out to Brevard Road.

And what about the economic side-effects of moving all the activity away from downtown - loss in revenues for restaurants, etc...

and then, what does the County do with that big empty (and historical society registered) building?

Sell it to a developer for condos?

Just exactly how many assistant's has Ron Moore hired?? If the county isn't going to buy the BS Mall, why not lease or barter some of it through the form of a tax break for the Biltmore 8. Move Small Claims Court, Traffic Court, Probation Violation, etc over there. Move the cashier's office back over to the sherrif's dept and start using the drive up window again to pay parking tickets, speeding tickets, etc. That should take maybe half of the traffic from the current courthouse. Use the courthouse for inmate and violent crimes hearings/trials.
