Listen, I've been all over the world, and every country has its share of ignorant people. Heck, right here in Illinois, I run across rednecks every single day!
You think slavery was only confined to the southern states? Hardly. It was just more prevalent there.
Not everyone from the southern United States is a hater or a racist. Just like not everyone else from the north embraces diversity. Some of the most violent race wars occurred right here in Chicago and in Boston.
The civil war was about state's rights vs. federalism. To this day, our country constantly tests the rights of states against the rights of the federal government.(The first issue that comes to mind is gay marriage). I will agree with you on one point; it probably would have been better for the US to have been broken into smaller territories. As it stands now, I think it is just too big to manage.
Bigotry and ignorance are alive and well in all parts of the United States, unfortunately.

The slippery slope - let the festival of blame & shame begin!
Should we start with fat people, drug users or alcoholics? Maybe we should just lump poor people into one big shameful group & send them to live on an isolated island like lepers.
Frankly, stupid people are far more dangerous. Lets tax them instead!

This is one of the most disgusting displays of ignorance I have seen. Although Chicago has been relatively shielded from the HIV virus compared to other cities in America and the world (and many people from outside of Chicago seem to have commented here), Chicagoans need to realize that HIV and AIDS is a global health crisis. Judgments of responsibility are not appropriate. They never were. Unfortunately, a few posters' sentiments echo those sentiments in the early days of the disease, when people were calling for a quarantine on gay men (as if they were the cause of HIV - they were not then, they are not now). Many of these comments are demonstrating symbolic prejudice - it is somehow more appropriate to be prejudice against gay men, African-Americans, Southeners, injecting-drug users, if they have HIV or AIDS. Instead of passing judgement and placing blame, try being compassionate. Try imagining what it would be like to have a chronic disease or to experience stigma.

New Jersey is essentially bankrupt because of the people in this piece. In fact the country is broke because all this human refuse insists at sucking the public teet dry. I paid over $50,000 in taxes fees fines penalities and interest to keep these parasites alive. This is why the country is in decline too much government supporting people and their spawn. Its game over for the rest of us who have to get up everyday to support these "poor"people.,who game the system to the destruction of us all. God save the Republic from these morons.

"Staggering poverty" isn't that just a wee bit of an overstatement? The South is a big place. There is some poverty. Actually, Henderson is not far from a few examples of great wealth - RTP, or Cary (home of SAS), or Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill.

Staggering poverty - that might be Haiti or Somalia. Poor - that might be parts of the South.

I've suspect some people would boo a cure for AIDS because it would deprive them of a chance to sneer down at its victims.
I suggest we just save the money and shoot all of 'em. Bullets are cheaper than hospitals.

One more thing, having sex with an Aids person only once could be enough to put you in an early grave. One cigarette won't do that! Nor eating a fatty hamburger either!

The fact that Ms. Holt was shocked that she did not receive free housing, transportation, and health care when she moved to a new location illustrates why this country is headed down the toilet.

The south is NOT all idiots with no teeth, picking their noses in public. I think our "southern" culture just holds people more accountable for their actions than apparently the north does. It sounds like up north you can be as irresponsible as you want, then when you contract something as a result, your liberal local governments step in and take care of you. Because, you know, we should all be FREE to do whatever the hell we please with no consequences!

Personally, if you eat yourself into a coma and die in front of me, I'll step over your obese body. If you're too stupid to know DRUGS ARE BAD for you and get HIV, well that sucks for you. You're an idiot. Sucks for you. And if you pop out kids you refuse to take care of, I'll be the neighbor calling CPS on your moronic, selfish ass.

BUT if you contract something through no fault of your own (rape, blood transplant, etc.) I'll do anything in my power to help you out. If you lose your job because of the economy and not because you're a lazy POS, again, I'll bend over backward to make sure you have food and shelter. but DO NOT expect me to care if you're just lazy, stupid, and selfish and manage to kill yourself off from something preventable. That's just Darwinism at work in my humble opinion.

So much for all you charitable Christian types. You missed the entire point of the article: bias, prejudice, and lack of education lead people down the wrong path. The same place they're leading you all.

Jesus was a socialist who went around helping the poor, healing the sick, and feeding loafs and wine to and caring for other human beings.

And, btw, these are not "your" tax dollars. What most of you pay in taxes wouldn't even cover the roads you drive on or the schools your kids go to. Most of the "disability" income she's getting comes from the INSURANCE program everyone pays into, including her when she was working.

Life is hard for everybody. Why not make it easier and take care of each other? Does everyone of you REALLY need or deserve the 5-6 digit incomes you get from the multiple people working in your household? What did you DO to earn it?
